After some ordinary Results with Hornby and reliability and general manufacturing faults with Accurascale Bachmann still has never let me down and the bang for the bucks and quality in the Bachmann has been untouched over the past 15 years for me personally however Personally Im dissapointed since i feel Hornby should keep waving the British flag high. To be fair when they saw the Thomas models move to Bachmann it feels like the lost something and have been playing second fiddle ever since. Even the new BT Dongle to control my elite with my Iphone which i got in 2024 feels a bit 15 years too late. But hey they did get there. I cant beleive Hornby became what seems the underdog but heres to the future and see what happens. Great video as always keep up the outstanding work. Have a surprise being released this Friday had to dabble into the world of T scale to complete a scene on my Hornby layout hopefully i pulled it off. Stay safe.

@@DeanPark well I will stick with what I know at the moment just like my toyota that’s clicking closer to the million mark. Yes Hornby steam is pretty damn fine but I have an old DCC Hornby class 08 that they made weathered etc it’s a top spec model and daily workhorse for me it would have been bought late 2007-8 just when Hornby were still doing great now it’s a bit of a worry. Fantastic David. A really balanced and impartial review. If you want to Improve the driveability of the Accurascale model, you can increase cv3 a little, so that the sound is a little ahead of the real acceleration. I have mine around 100 or so. Kind Regards Matt

Thanks so much for sharing with us, David. My goodness, the sound definition of the Accurascale model is fabulous, and just that little bit closer to the real thing, if you close your eyes. Impressive looks, accuracy overall, and sound! I am very much hanging out now, for my 37409 to arrive here in New Zealand (hopefully by the end of this month). I think I'm going to preorder the Accurascale Exclusive 37405 now too, on the strength of your review.

I prefer the Accurascale 37s, simply because they are significantly cheaper than the new Bachmann ones, but you still get an excellent model. I've wanted a 37 in my collection for years, and I was lucky to get one Accurascale model from Rails of Sheffield. I wasn't fussed about the era or livery; I just wanted any 37 variant. The one I have is 37027 'Loch Eil' in BR blue with the Eastfield stripe and car headlight (complete with a great weathering job to boot). The model is so good that I want to get a second 37, but that'll have to wait a fair while.

Some great additional touches from Accurascale that give the customer an instant ....'now I'm liking this'. Very difficult to give a clear winner and think you're right that they both have their pros and cons against each other. With Accurascale going to that extra effort with the sound card and booklet, I'm surprised that they didn't round it all off by giving the modeller an actual depot palque to add to the loco rather than the customary painted example that always lets the loco down. If I was buying one, I think I'd opt for the Accurascale one too. A good review Dave.

Hi Dave Enjoyed the review I’ve got new Bachmann and accurascale I don’t do sound but accurascale edge it with the seamless nose join and the snow ploughs for me. Only issue I’ve had is the head code box covers at one end became detached in transit I popped them back in but one box is missing it’s handrail Rails of Sheffield where I ordered it said when they receive spares from accurascale they’ll replace them. Guess that’s the only downside of these super detail models lots of fragile bits.I’m not selling my earlier Bachmann 37/4’s as I think they’re still good models plus all my Bachmann runs like a dream. Keep the videos coming Dave I’d love to have room for a layout that size 🙂

I have 37423 and 37418 from Accurascale and Bachmann respectively, Bachmann have made a stunning locomotive that works brilliantly. The biggest problem this model has are in the smaller details and considerations that the Accurascale model has which blows it out the water. Better snow plough choice and design, superior speaker on sound fitted models, Hall sensor to enhance this further, the ability to fit a full set of bufferbeam detail to the model with the aforementioned ploughs fitted, the magnetic roof plate for easy decoder access and the Stay-alive capacitors. The fact that Bachmann, who no doubt spent hundreds of thousands of pounds re-tooling their 37 kept the snowplough (easily one of its most iconic features) as a single piece that slots into the NEM socket is sad, it massively impacts an otherwise great model as the real locomotives don't fit them to the bogie. And I don't think it is unreasonable to expect this from £300+ models. Infact I am seriously considering trying to fit the Accurascale ones to it!. For most it will come down to the cost, even a £24 difference is not something to ignore, in my case their is almost a £100 difference as 37418 is a Bachmann KMRC limited edition! costing around £360. For me, the deluxe models from Bachmann are not worth the asking price for tinted windscreen glazing and a motorized fan, its a lot of extra money for a feature (the working fan) that Accurascale will be incorporating on the class 31 and 50, and likely other diesels in the future, And at a similar cost the their 37. We cannot overstate and underestimate the importance of 'bang for your buck' in this hobby, and unfortunately on this occasion I feel that Bachmann have fallen short in this endeavour.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark Жыл бұрын
Money talks doesn’t it. Both excellent models. But for me, modelling Scottish region a 37 has ploughs fitted! Ironically, this 37051 didn’t have its ploughs fitted when in this livery and working in Scotland! So I won’t be fitting them to this model 😆 it only got them after moving south and coming back up in the 90’s….and I am modelling the late 80’s. Typical eh! I wait years for a decent plough/bufferbeam set up and I don’t need them for this loco 😆

Enjoyed the comparison. I like the powered fan on the deluxe Bachmann but the big plus for me on the Accurascale is the addition of a stay alive. The first batch of SLW 24s offered a Hall effect sensor to trigger flange squeal on curves.

I agree with the Accurasale being the better of the two, but the engine note only came on when the train was already moving. The Bachmann version acceleration started as the model moved. Which one is right. Martin. (Thailand) but in England for about three weeks.

Sometimes the loco will coast a little before opening up! It’s strange but I’ve seen it on many real locos. It’s like the driver has taken the brake off and just notched in into life. Before giving it the beans.
@johnwalker9750
@johnwalker9750 Жыл бұрын
Excellent review Dave as per. I ordered the Accurascale 37027 because I wanted to fit both snow ploughs and pipes, which you can't do on the Bachmann version. The snowploughs were a bugger to fit as the holes for the centre plough weren't quite big enough and I had to make them slightly larger with a pin drill. 2 out of 10. I also had to do the same for one of the pipes. The sound when the loco moves and accelerates is certainly very impressive, but the horn sounds are feeble. The sound files on my new Bachmann class 101 green speed whiskers DMU have horns sounds that put Accurascale's in the shade; same applies for the guard whistle. I daresay I could address these issues with CV adjustments. However, I have had to send my loco back to Rails of Sheffield since it developed a running fault - it barely moves even on full throttle, and all this after I had added a train crew and applied some light weathering. It ran perfectly for a week, but it is now on it's way back to Sheffield. I waited 18 months for this loco, so again 2 out of 10. In my limited experience to date I have to say that Bachmann factory fitted DCC sound locos have proved the most reliable.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark Жыл бұрын
Wow, that’s an interesting insight. You’ve not had a great time of it. Thanks for the heads up about the detailing too. The horns on the bachmann are certainly louder. As for that dmu sound fitted from bachmann… it’s good isn’t it? I heard it and it is so characteristic of the 101. Was really impressed! If only they’d do a three car one! :-(

A very helpful and balanced review. Agree that the AS model edges it but they are both 5 star models. Whilst the AS sound reproduction is better that is largely due to the better speaker set up - I think both sound projects are excellent. I felt that the Bachmann model movement was better synched with the sound, especially the smooth pick up from stationary and also the braking (the AS model was still making brake squeal sound after it had stopped). I model the 1960s so still awaiting the AS green versions, from preproduction versions seen at shows I actually think the Bachmann BR green is a better representation than AS,s which to date remains a little flat and moss like. Still, we are currently spoilt for choice and as you say we can happily run examples from either manufacturer side by side.

Retailers are having to slash the prices of bachmann models to shift them! The 47004 is a classic case. There are also deluxe 37’s going for cheaper than the original retail price of the sound fitted versions. People see that they can get more for their money (and an equally as good model) from other companies and they vote with their wallets. Heljan are increasing prices ridiculously high as well. I slashed my order for 26’s and 86’s when I saw the price increases. China, Covid, materials, shopping or even a wee brexit blame. I’m not sure what their excuses are now or whether to believe them.

Great overview of both of these models here Dave, to be honest I think there is room for both and there are good and bad for both, for me at the moment it is going to be bachmann ones that I purchase in the future because they have a lot more choice available in terms of livery, the versions I am currently looking at are the bachmann 37430 Cwmbran in large logo and 37401 Mary Queen of Scots in the intercity livery, my main reason for going for these two models at the moment over any of the accurascale ones is because I really like the look of them however that isn’t saying that I’m not going to maybe look at an accurascale one in the future, it’s just their selection at the moment doesn’t really contain any versions that I really want, one version I would like is a coal sector version so if accurascale do one of those that may be an accurascale class 37 being added to my fleet, another reason for me going with Bachman at the moment is because some places are actually selling the standard dc versions which are the ones I need as I’m still not a dcc user they are being sold now between £160 and £200 if you know where to look for them, those are my reasons for Bachmann at the moment, they just have a better selection available compared to accurascale at the moment in my view. as I say I haven’t completely ruled out an accurascale one, they just need to announce one that would peak my interest.

Great review, sir. It seems there is no wrong choice between Bachmann & Accurascale. For me, I would go for the Accurascale due to the price difference of the DCC Ready versions and the fact that the previous Bachmann model was a pretty good machine and is now available for around £100, if you can find some "new-old stock". Which means I'll probably buy an "old" Bachmann, come to think of it! My fascination with the class 37 started as a small boy, watching them collecting trip-worked coal wagons from the mine where my dad worked. There were dozen (hundreds even) of them stabled at Cardiff Canton, and they could be seen all over South Wales, growling around hauling seemingly unbelievably heavy loads. They even triple (or was is quad?) headed the heaviest trains in the country between Port Talbot & Llanwern steelworks. Amazing machines. Along with the class 20s, they are definitely my favourite non-steam powered locos. It is apt that most were built at The Vulcan Foundry, as they have certainly "lived long and prospered"!

As someone who has several of the previous bachmann 21-pin release of mostly 37/4s (and a couple of the earlier 8-pin ones), the new plux22 release (mine is 430) is a slight improvement, but not too much of note (mostly bogie chains and the fan grille tbh). Whereas the accurascale one (mine is 423) has several new features, like the cab control lights and the first time WIPACs have been seen on 37s in rtr. I prefer the accurascale one, but neither have really had a chance to run since purchasing them because of moving house a year ago.

Firstly, the split headcode box 37s that got converted to 37/5s or 37/7s had the boxes removed, sealed beam marker lights installed, and the nose end doors plated over. However, Laira depot took a different approach with three 37/0s, including 37053. They removed the nose end doors, central headcode boxes, sealed over the gap where the doors were, making it flush, and installed a central headcode box with market lights! These can be identified by the headcode box marker lights being closer than normal. The other thing is, in late 1989, Railfreight installed a brand new computerised washing plant, at Motherwell depot, where the loco stood still, and the washing plant moved along the loco, a bit like a Tesco car wash! The driver chose the wash function, keyed in the locomotive number, or numbers, as it could take pairs of 37s, and then stood and watched the washer do the work! 37051 was the first loco to be washed by the new machine! Lastly, I'd love Accurascale to do a 47! Would be great to see them compared to a Bachmann 47.

I worked on these for BR, then Loadhaul and finally EWS for going on 15 years. I haven't received my Accurascale model yet, but based on these clips I'd have to say that I prefer the sound of the engine idling, and the horns, on the Bachmann model, although the cold start on the accurascale sounds good and the "failed"? start on the Bachmann is just silly. Each to their own I guess.

These are both fantastic models. I haven’t picked up ether model yet, as I was waiting for a comparison like this, but I have to say I think Accurascale have only just bet Bachmann. I think both models are about equal in terms of detail, and it would be basically impossible to chose a model based on that factor. The running characteristics of both are amazing as well, and if it isn’t exactly how you want it you could probably change the momentum settings on the decoder. In terms of sound though, I think that is the reason why Accurascale only just win. The sound is slightly cleaner, and you can hear the engine rumble slightly better. The Bachmann has its ups to though in my opinion with the sound, as I remember in your original review on that model that there was some sort of sound in the start-up that I liked better, but that’s preference more than anything, as I could not tell you which sounds more realistic. More than anything, I think Accurascale win, particularly due to their slightly better sound, but more so because of their pricing. To me, it just seems obvious which model to go for when both are equally as good, but one is slightly cheaper. I will be interested to hear what others have to say though, and I’m looking forward to seeing what both companies have in store for us in the future. Edit: sorry that was a ridiculously long comment…

It is good to review new products but i do miss your actual building of your layout videos
@DeanPark
@DeanPark Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your feedback, and of course I don’t mind you being honest and letting me know. I feel the same. However progress on the layout comes down to a few factors, which if you don’t mind I’ll explain. 1) I now scratch build most of my structures, and my builds take months. I like to do it right! :-) So I don’t make as quick/enough progress to justify a layout video every 2-3 weeks. This should change when I get my incline wall in place, scenic work should progress quicker after that. But scratch builds make my layout unique and that slows visual progress. 2) this hot summer weather, this stops progress on the layout. My reviews and other non layout videos therefore are the only option to keep followers entertained in the meantime as I’m not up the loft as much for those. 3) my family circumstances have slightly changed at the moment. 4) my work has been very busy of late, and when I come home I don’t always have the energy to work on the layout as much as I’d like. I hope that is helpful. I do love layout building most of all. But life gets in the way of my hobby sometimes.

Excellent review and fair. Sound can be a personal preference. The Accurascale has the nice deep base on the thrash and Bachmann has some improvements on other parts of the sound files. The Accurascale Pulled away a bit suddenly, and a driver would have been pushed back into his seat on a full scale (Prototype ). I don't know if this was because of your cpontrolling of the model but it was a bit sudden for it to go from a complete halt to nearly six mph. The bachmann was much smoother in starting to move. You can't buy any Accurascale class 37 today, May 2024. Everything out of stock. On their website, everything out of stock or you can pre-order a loco in colours you don't even want. I've never in my life seen a website where over 95% of what they sell is out of stock. I also perceive Accurascale as an elite exclusive club, which I never want to be a part of. I want to go online to a model railway shop and find most locos in stock, where I can order one today and it will be delivered by the end of next week. Maybe I'm too normal 😬
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 5 ай бұрын
Yup, I can understand you’re frustration. Most of their stock sells out on pre order both on their website and in their retail network. It’s not just a case with accurascale. Cavalex class 56 locos we’re all but sold out on pre order, this has been the case with other small companies too. But companies are doing so many variations in one production run, that results in less of each being produced. So hence they sell out on pre order. If they only didn’t 2-3 liveries in each production run then they’d have more of each made. But then it might stay in stock longer…and these smaller companies (even the bigger ones like Hornby and Bachmann) can’t afford to have stock sitting! They need the models to sell through quickly to invest in the next new release. Unless you’re costs are being back rolled by a large retailer who will take the majority of your stock and sell it through quickly. There is No easy answer in today’s competitive and crowded market place.

Both are excellent models and both have negative points. Bachmanns model as a static exhibit is brilliant. The bodie chains are overscale but in my opinion capture them right for a 00 model. The linking arm is present which isn't on the accurascale. The down points to the accurascale model are the indents for the lamp irons, the shallow nose bonnet doors and the over prominoot doors around the exhaust ports. The bachmann lets itself down internally with no room for improvement with a speaker upgrade and it has gone to 22 pin so you can't transfer decoders from the older bachmann model. The accurascale trumos it on sound file, speaker set up and cab lighting. The soundfile on the accurascale model is centuries apart from bachmanns and you get unrefurbished and refurbished sound that replicates the real thing. The bachmann sound file as a die hard 37 man, is poor. No characteristic difference between sub types and the sound muffles as you open it up and it tries to be a mix of both sub types. Not good enough. When it comes to the buffer beam, how bachmann can tool a top class model and provide accessories for hornby railroad, beggers belief. Accurascale when detailed, phenomenal whether you want full detail or working tension lock. It is all covered. Two fine models but one lets itself down on the features when you look beyond the appearance. Accurascale wins for me, but bachmann could come back into the game with a couple of easy mods and a drop in price to match.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that detail. I think bachmann will need to get real and cut their price! As I won’t be keen to pay £340-50 for a deluxe sound one with inferior speakers and £90 extra when I can get an accurascale one. No models are perfect.
