A VERY BUSY MONTH! - read on!...
Dean Park Railway modelling sees significant progress this month and a visit from Everard Junction! Richard shows me how to weather oxford vehicles. I also cast my eye on the NEW HORNBY APT and loads more model railway content which include new running shots of new locomotives on the layout. Check out the links below for some great products, as used at Dean Park Model Railway. If you enjoy Rail transport modelling you'll like this!

Morning Dave, sorry I'm a bit behind with my watching this week and I wanted to be able to see this update in one sitting where I could concentrates. As we've come to expect the video is very well filmed well explained and your work area is lovely and tidy. It's a privilege to be able to follow your progress and although its not my era of interest I can well see what you enjoy about it, its a time of change in the railway's of developing the APTs and other locomotives. I enjoy the time and effort put into getting the buildings and scenery right, and the weathering of all right down to the small vehicles all helps to tell a story. You've got a work of art there, and those of us who lucky enough to be able to follow you can enjoy modeling at it best. One of the highlights is seeing the short running sessions it helps to keep me informed of the overall impression of what you want to achieve. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and stories with us take care stay safe and well, Eddy xx

I think some of the engine sounds have quite a way to be developed yet to be convincing. They’ve come a very long way since I first heard sound from model trains in the 1980s However I think some of the Diesel engines sound too tinny to be convincing yet. That said, your layout is simply extraordinary. The attention to detail is beyond belief. The overall effect is what we in the model ship fraternity call “museum quality” ( I.e. flawless - the only thing more realistic is an actual ship ) Thank you for continuing to bring us along on your hobbying - your filmmaking is as precise and inspiring as your model building

I like the APT coaches and I am glad that Hornby have combatted the QC issues on this occasion. However I second that the large capacitor should have been hidden in the restroom perhaps as it would have been out of sight. But I am optimistic about the APT model that is coming out. Also from what I have seen is that the GBRF Class 60's are now released along with the Cappagh Class 60 as well. Hope those two models are of similar quality considering the price is higher than the DB Cargo ones are selling for. A like from me and thanks for the showcase Dave. Ash.

Hi Dave, have you looked closely at the TRBS coaches ? The door sliders on the side of the coaches have not been painted silver to simulate the chrome running strip ( well, not on mine anyway). The moulding is there, just not painted, so the same colour as the coach side. Have checked with the rest of the other extra coaches & they're fine. Strangely it's both coaches on both sides so it's a complete miss during detailing. Hopefully going to fix mine with a fine tipped silver marker as apart from that ( & the capacitor problem) like yourself, i'm really pleased & can't wait to get the 7 car unit to go with them. Great video ( as always) the layouts looking great.

I was tempted by the new APT, but I've got the old 5 car set from the early 80s and I'm going to stick with that - it even tilts. As the APT has such a smooth profile and simple livery, I didn't think modern manufacturing made a big enough improvement to warrant £400 for a new version of something I've already got. Also I upgraded my 2 short HST sets with the new hunt elites for mk3sd's, and they seem too short; when I have the motor car pushing the rakes, the gangways rub and derail the coaches. A bit annoying, but I'll just have to either do some mods or just swap over power cars whenever I change direction for mainline running.

I saw the APT coaches today and thought they looked OK. The capacitor looks bad when they are lit on your video but I also saw a train on Pete Watermans layout and normal viewing I did not notice it was there so may not be too bad. What puzzles me is why it is thee if it does not keep the lights on. I have a set on order and will have to wait for that to see if I can find out what it does. Hi, yeah I’ll wait and see what the apt looks like. I do like the coaches but the capacitor is silly. And it doesn’t seem to do anything to keep the lights on. Can i ask as I have no experience of it, how do you remove the liquid mask?
@DeanPark

I rubbed a cotton bud over it, or you can use a cocktail stick to try peel it off.

Great Video Dave , I think birch ply is the way to go myself but the price of timber as gone stupid its 3x the price it was 2 years ago , I would not like to start building a large layout today .

Exactly… materials (at the moment at least) are just silly prices. £60 a sheet of birch ply.

Is the capacitor working, it doesn’t seem like it is
@andrewstevenson5449

Thanks for the update, Dave. That capacitor in the APT coach looks dreadful: is it in all the wagons? As it doesn't seem to do anything, I wonder if it's even connected, or even if you've been sent a second hand coach that somebody's tried to fit a capacitor to. Good on Hornby for moving to the cardboard packaging.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
Lol, I can assure you they are new. All coaches are like this. Hornby have since explained the use of the capacitor. Which is too long winded to bore you with. On this era of super detail the capacitor is a bit of a let down to some. I know I can’t see it whe. It’s viewed from normal angles, but to have it on show I’ll have to limit track level views!

Brilliant video as always! Hoping a running session between you and Richard comes next! Love what you are doing and the new editions are great! Thanks for another great video Dave! I would like to ask is there a plan to dim the lights in those coaches seen at the end using some resistors as they look really good but very bright in comparison to other locos?
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers. I’m glad you like it. Not sure how I can tackle the lighting issue as yet.
@millsy_2523

@@DeanPark Resistors would be my go to solution, you can get multiple different strengths and they just dim the lights down that wee bit so they don’t spill onto the track as much

Im thinking the capacitors might need longer time on the track to be able to hold some charge in em. If they are new will they not have juice ?
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t think it matters if they are new. They should charge within seconds.

New taxation on plastic packaging for products coming into the UK is possibly why they’ve gone for formed card.

Good for the environment, so I ain’t complaining. Perhaps not suitable for a heavy loco, but good for coaches.

those vans at kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqXTZZKDopmpnqM could they be coupled with chains rather than HUNT magnets or tension locks??? you can get model ship anchor chain around the size that you need to go from the modelled hooks... or would they not support the weight of the trains?

Thought id come and see your thoughts on the APT. I had a close look at the coaches and extra powercar today and have since decided that i probably wont be buying one now. Was massively dissapointed. Feels cheap and nasty to me, i took it apart and plenty of room for that capacitor under the floor ect. Just so many iffy bits that make it a bit meh. Seems like a 2000’s era model rather than 2021 tbh.

That visible capacitor is a real let down, other than that the Hornby APT could be the beginning of the “Super Detail” era renaissance.

Hornby have done a decent job here. But I still think Bachmann and accurascale are leaving them behind.

But Ben, it isn’t super detailed? The detail on the outside below floor level is 1980s standard. It looks like a toy.

Hornby needs to bring manufacturing back to the UK. I'm more than happy with my c1980s APT, i take any UK Hornby over made in China trash.

I'm not sure about the Hornby APT, looks like a toy rather than a model and that underframe detail let's it down in my opinion as well as that badly positioned capacitor.

The APT is a very simple looking train. Hornby have captured the shape very well. But a lot of people are focusing on the capacitor and are disappointed.

The capacitor really is a schoolboy design error very disappointing. The interior detail sadly also looks very basic and crude with the tables red etc.

Yes there are a few areas that have been simplified to reduce costs…which is a shame as it could have been the ultimate Apt!

It’s not a full review as such. I’ve just given you a peak at it. I’ll be doing a full review of the 7 car pack when it does arrive. If I’d waited I’d have to have covered all 14 cars in one video, which would be a very long video.cheers.
