Great video. Made one based on your design. Just a few comments: 1) Get bottles with flat (or nearly flat) bottoms. Don't get the bottles that have the 5 or 6-star bases. It's more difficult to make that top cap airtight 2) Take off the labels before you begin constructing the fountain. I recommend goo gone and vegetable oil to remove all traces of the glue before you begin. 3) Trying to drill through the hard plastic base of the water bottle is difficult and frustrating; it's much easier with a soldering pen to melt open a hole and then you don't need a large hole, just two straw-sized holes to match the holes in the top cap, 4) A better way (IMHO) to splice the straws is with a diagonal cut; the straws can then be connected almost without needing glue, 5) Also use a diagonal cut on the ends of the straws as you thread them through the holes. Makes it a lot easier to pull them through and then once you have the straws threaded, trim to diagonal edge to make them even again. 6) Glue the **** out of that top cap between the seams and the base around the top cap, it's where you'll get the most air leakage. Also, enclose the glue seal in duct tape to add more protection. It has to be completely air tight because any loss of air pressure will cause the fountain to fail. 7) In addition to glue, wrap the middle double cap with duct tape - maybe multiple layered colors for a nice effect. It will make the double cap more firm and stable. 8) Dye the water with food coloring to make a cool fountain and for an even neater effect, fill the reservoir with blue-dyed water and pour in yellow-dyed water. As the colors mix you get a nice shade of green.

Heron's Fountain is often used as a simple educational demonstration of fluid dynamics, pressure, and the conservation of energy. However, it's important to note that Heron's Fountain doesn't create a perpetual motion machine or generate more energy than is put into it. The water flow eventually stops due to air entering the system, friction, and the loss of potential energy as water flows downward.

Ezekiel Colcord conservation of energy This is nowhere near to a perfect isolated system in which all energy and matter stay within the system. Energy is lost when the water rubs against the air by friction! Or by radiation or whatever If it kept going forever not only could you _create_ energy by attaching a generator as previously said by another commentator, but in it of itself it could ever only produce enough energy to keep itself running. Think of it as an equation. The best you could get in a perfect isolated system (theoretically), is 1=1 where the energy created by the contraption powers itself and only itself, or the contraption doesn’t lose energy period. In reality it’s 1-(energy loss from non-perfectly isolated system) = less than 1 Which is why a machine like that is impossible here with our understanding of physics, and if you made a machine 1=1 go collect your Nobel prize. Attaching a generator would basically make 1= more than 1 Which just no.

Yay! Promoting science literacy to children (and their classmates) is fantastic. 2-liter bottles will increase the period of the cycle (it will run longer), but keep the straws small. Increasing straw/pipe diameter will increase flow rate, which will decrease the period of the cycle. I hope this is helpful.

I mean, to use much smaller bottles for example. I don't know about physics at all, so I don't know if it matter the size of this "structure" for the water to complete the circuit. If someone can help me I would appreciate it so much. Thank you!!

No. I never take any perpetual motion machine claims with any sense of interest. They're all fake, misunderstandings or misleading. Perpetual energy is like saying 1=2. Input energy can never be more than output energy. In the real world there will always be some net energy loss, but even in a perfect system input will always equal output. Energy is always conserved unless you actively put more in. Which is why all "perpetual motion" machines are either downright fake or have a hidden energy source. The only way motion can be pereptual is if friction is zero. Something can move forever, as long as energy is conserved. This is the case with an object in space, for example, or superfluid helium which exhibits frictionless behaviour. But these things still cannot generate any energy by themselves and so thermodynamics is still upheld.

Hello, I am curious why it wouldn’t be possible, I can come up with some reasons like maybe the drain off of energy or an “imperfection” in the creation (which can mean many things, like come on I’m trying to cover my bases), but I would like your take on it as I honestly can’t think of why a non stop fountain would break thermodynamics. I have very limited knowledge so I might be wrong about some things and maybe it’s really obvious why it couldn’t work like a perpetual motion machine, which is still possible, but hard to make from what I know, but I honestly can’t thank of why! Thank you for reading and for your time! Have a good day/ night!

@UltimateMegaMaster 2 жыл бұрын
@@funtowngames1523 You actually got the answer correctly to your question. Principally, energy must be conserved. In this video, the water simply loses energy by friction and sound. A perfect closed system can sustain perpetual machines. Perfect here means zero losses. However, in practicality, achieving 99% efficiency power transfer is already super hard due to losses, even in space! Having energy changing back into its natural form is also impractical. For example, we need 1 unit of light per hour to read. Light is converted from electrical charge in batteries. Let say the battery charges up with 10 units of light. If the torchlight is perpetually charged, i.e. using its own light, we cannot use the light to read. Because using the light to read on its own is a loss towards the system. If we use 1 unit of light to read, the battery will only have 9 units left to charge itself up, losing 1 unit of light every hour until it is completely drained. Therefore, currently, having perpetual machine is essentially impractical because if the energy were to revert its form, we won't be able to benefit from it. Maybe in the future we have the knowledge to break the 2nd law. Making more than what it is given. This, however, will cause a massive entropy in the universe. So massive that Big Bang is like blowing bubbles because energy is everywhere!

The original was actually quite a bit larger and operated for a much longer time... the bottom two "bottles" or reservoirs were hidden from view and so it seemed there was a fountain that poured into the upper funnel but it never seemed to "fill up"... thus why it is called a "Non-stop Fountain" in the book he wrote called "Heron's Pneumatica"...
