CARTOON EVOLUTION #38 - SHREK
I take a look at the history and evolution of Shrek! Spawning from a 1990 novel by acclaimed author William Steig, the ugly green ogre Shrek saw a pretty swift transition from book to screen. Spending a decade in production hell, the original DreamWorks film went through many hands, including Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg; and numerous iterations, including one which would have seen him voiced by the late Chris Farley. After a last minute over-haul, Shrek went on to be one of the most influential animated films ever, and the character himself, under the lead of Mike Myers, one of the most beloved cartoon characters in history - forging one of the most successful - and successfully memed - animated franchises of all time.
I take a look at how Shrek and his pals; Donkey, Fiona, and Puss in Boots have evolved and how animators changed their look, personality and visual style over the years.
Here's my look at Shrek through the years!

Another reason for Mike Myers re-recording his lines with a scottish accent is because his mother used to read fairy tales for him when he was a kid, in a scottish accent, thinking the accent fits a fairy tale.

This ogre is an absolute icon who set the precedent for animated movies to this day. These movies know how to make pop songs and references really work while still keeping a strong emotional core (except in The Third). His impact on animation and my childhood is immeasurable.

This is definitely unintentional but while Shrek parodied Disney's fairytales more than anything, I think the character himself (in the movies) works as an anti-Mickey Mouse of sorts. They're both the most iconic animated characters of their companies and have iconic ear designs and serve as underdogs, yet while Mickey is short, cute, cheerful and optimistic, Shrek is big, less conventionally appealing and a little more of a pessimist (but still a good guy). This even works outside their characters:Mickey was a star of many short films and has been an ongoing franchise for nearly a century (though Disney have actually been a bit conservative with him), while Shrek has mostly just been used in his movie quadrilogy. What Mickey advanced in 2D animation, Shrek did (or could be debated to have done) for 3D. Since audience demand toned him down, to this day Disney fears for Mickey's brand image to the point it's arguably done more harm to it and simultaneously keeps him an icon while somewhat alienating him as a character from pop culture, while Shrek thrives on his flaws being celebrated and memes rekindled a genuine love of the ogre by audiences.

It’s really interesting how Shrek and Toy Story’s development stories are very much alike. They both were very different early on, the main characters were unrecognizable from how we know them, and they both could have ended up being disasters. But luckily with some reworking of their stories and their protagonists and perseverance, they ended up being huge sensations, and two of the most influential animated films of all time. They are both in my eyes very inspirational stories, and show how if you’re working on something and it doesn’t work, don’t ever give up and have a great team alongside you to make something great.

I think that the Broadway show is such an underated musical... I think that Shrek's character and personality are so much more explained here than the movie. The musical number "Who'I Be" in my opinion, is the representation of Shrek's true personality and it explains why he can't do any of the stuff he wants to, and he explain everything in this line "An ogre always hide, an ogre's fate is know". Translating, it means that Shrek wants to be a knight, a viking or even a poet. But because of the world jugding him just for his appearance, he is forced to be alone and hide from both society and his own feelings (and thats why Shrek needs Donkey on his side, to free him from his own shell).

What’s my favorite Shrek line? I got to say, in the scene from the first film where they save Fiona and she and Shrek have just met, the line “Well I got to save my ass.” really gets me. The way how Shrek is of course referring to Donkey, but Fiona takes often as she thinks he means saving himself, to me, it’s adult humor done right.

With Shrek being such a universally beloved, landmark film, I really wonder why no bit of footage of either Chris Farley’s version or Mike Myers old voice recordings before he came up with the Scottish accent have been released publicly. I can’t tell if it’s because of legal issues with the families of both actors or if it has to do with them not being proud of the preliminary version of the movie, similar to how Pixar is not proud of the early iteration of Toy Story before Woody was reworked to be more appealing. Just like how with that movie, even a single seen of the early animatics managed to make it to home video, for historical sakes I think it’s important to see some of it officially someday.

Believe it or not, at one point chris Farley was actually going to play captain underpants in a live-action movie in the late 90s after the original book came out, but that got cancelled due to his death and obviously became an animated movie produced by dreamworks in 2017. I don't know how I'd feel about the next Shrek movie, but I would love to see an expanded universe of Spinoffs with other characters. I've loved what they've done with Puss in Boots so far, didn't see the Saturday Preview of the new movie, but something like that leading up to a new Shrek. Maybe give Donkey a solo adventure or something. As for the original films, I find the fourth one a nice send off to the early era of DWA. The one where they were trying to make more Shrek inspired "edgy" movies, but failed to get the same kind of quality and spirit. It seems to have a tone more like KFP and HTTYD, and there's a distinct lack of fart jokes. While not as grand as the first two, it certainly was a major improvement over the third one. That one felt rushed. It had good concepts, but the execution was sloppy.

Have Dave Lee I have a brain storming suggestion for your 2023 cartoon evolution I really liked your Cartoon Evolution theme to a DreamWorks franchise. You think you can do the same thing with two other franchises that i enjoyed the most. 1) "How to Train Your Dragon" (2003-2023)🐲 celebrating 20 years Based on the book series written by a British author "Cressida Cowell" and was bought and created for DreamWorks Animation 2) "Trolls" (1959-2023)🌈 celebrating 64 years Based on the original dolls created by danish woodcarver "Thomas Dam" and was bought and created for DreamWorks Animation. You think you could do these DreamWorks theme cartoon evolution videos this year?

I don’t usually condone stealing valuable information or resources from any film or game studio, but if anyone out there has ANY of either Chris Farley’s original Shrek recordings or Mike Myers’ original Shrek Canadian voice, go ahead and upload it to the internet! It’s always so great to learn more information on the production of films we all know and love, and really helps us appreciate them more than ever. Regarding the book, I remember seeing a copy of it when my 6th grade English class was prepping for a poem/short stories assignment. My classmates and I were surprised to learn about said book since it was about a year or two after the first film debuted. Though speaking of its author, I remember reading "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" as a kid, which was an interesting 'be careful what you wish for' type of story that also featured donkeys. As for the movies, the first two were amazing, the third installment was okay, the fourth one was decent, and "Puss in Boots" was a solid spinoff. Heck, I liked some of the products that came with the first movie, especially the 'Ogre-sized' M&Ms. I also really can't wait for "The Last Wish."

My favorite will be Shrek 2 just cause of the scene where Shrek and others are chained up and Gingy comes to save them. The whole part with Pinocchio talking about wearing woman's underwear. That had me cracking up the whole time and I still enjoy it when it airs on TV. The first one will always be a neat and endearing movie but the 2nd one is my all time favorite. I do have the first 3 soundtracks but I didn't really care for the 4th one. I couldn't get into the whole Shrek not being born like the "It's A Wonderful Life" movie. I still went and saw it in theaters but it just didn't get the first time. It's grown on me a little. I wouldn't mind seeing a whole new installment of movies of Shrek and friends. I'd call it more of a continuation of the franchise then a reboot. If they like Dave has said they want to keep the original voice actors then it's more of just newer stories of the characters then a reboot with a whole new cast. Oh Dave not sure if you knew about it and if you did and just thought it wasn't good enough material for this video I do understand. There was a Christmas album with songs of Shrek and Donkey first Chrsitmas together. It's pretty funny and I love the songs too

Rosio's name is pronounced Row-see-oh as it is of italian origins. Also I wonder if Steig isn't prounounced like "steeg" (as in the swedish name Stig).

I did extensive research into how to pronounce Stieg, and took the pronunciation directly from an official documentary produced on him.

Great video, just wished you'd mentioned about Donkey's cameo in the NBC series Father of the Pride.

To think of all the things that needed to happen for Mike Meyers to win the role of shrek is to ponder the reality of fate, even as a non-fatalist

The first Shrek film is my favorite. I find myself relating quite a bit to the ogre.

Well I had mixed opinions upon hearing of a 5th Shrek film, but after seeing this video I have a lot more faith in a 5th and maybe 6-8 films. I hope they will do well. Even if we only get 2 more Shrek films. 😊

I kinda feel sad that the story didn’t conclude with Shrek forever after, and there is going to be a 5th movie,I felt the ending was perfect to conclude.

PDI wasn't split off of DreamWorks - DreamWorks BOUGHT them out and merged them into themselves. Why create a whole new division from scratch when you already have one available?

If only a certain youtube critic from the animation community understood Shrek's cultural impact on animated films moving forward.
