This is a brilliant visualisation of ‘The parts are identical, until they aren’t’. Just because a part claims to be 1 to 1 with another, doesn’t mean it is. My skill set isn’t engine blocks, but turbochargers and superchargers; the amount of kit that claims to be “Ready to build” or “Made to the same specification and tolerance to OEM” often needs as much finessing, testing and checks as rough parts that you expect to need that degree of work. Some OEM parts need as much prep for the best results. Nothing is perfect, but the closer we can get to perfect, the better the product the customer gets back. Dave and his team have the same mantra as me, don’t take anything for granted; do it right, first time and every time.

Great seeing such thorough work and the missed specs that some businesses claim to achieve. With the deck thickness, there’s a limit to how thick it could be with regards to heat paths, water volume etc. I’m not suggesting there’s a problem with this head at all, but Just having a thicker casting isn’t an indicator of ‘being better’ there’s other factors that effect quality. I’ve seen blocked waterways from cores patterns slipping etc in the foundry.

Yeah never trust ANYTHING right out of the box…what most people don’t know many spare parts are most often quality control rejects from the assembly lines (especially NOS or CAPA CERTIFIED)…if a part fails QC check they don’t throw it away, they put in a parts box and sell it to shops and unsuspecting customers. Most places won’t do the required machining to put the parts back into spec…good of you to show this in real time, great video Dave 👍

Enjoyed seeing the vacuum check. The maximum seen on a gauge, at SEA LEVEL, is 29.5inHg or 749.3mmHg. Lower values the higher above sea level. I have awesome USA made vacuum pumps at my job for drying ovens, and chambers to pull air bubbles through seals of liquid filled units. Ideally that needle will not move once you pull the air out and draw vacuum. Of course, in an oven you have two to three potential leak areas: door seal, gauge threads, pump tubing (we use stainless hard lines). The rubber pad was so cool! You know that deck was smooth, flat, and clean as can be.

Extremely valuable tip unfortunately I learned that the hard way to always do a full inspection/ tear down on a new/ reman head or block . Long story short I got a set of 6.0 power stoke heads and one head had an injector cup that had an elongated hole. After making my own injector cup tool so i didn’t have to remove the head was able to pull it and put a new one in. Always check someone else’s work regardless if will save you loads of headache and heart ache

I learned twice to not retract the stylus/head of an out of production, compact, Mahr profilometer within its own casing. The diamond tip becomes disconnected from the wire spring, hence it becoming useless. No more heads available on eBay. Bought two of the last seven. Thought someone touched the tip with a fingernail. No. Just the retraction killed it. Love that thing. Hopefully this head can last another three years.
@RonRussell-sj1zf5 ай бұрын
I was touring the Cummins Jamestown, NY engine plant (built the L10 engine there then) with a customer back in the early'90' I think it was and we came to the cylinder head assembly area. The assembler had a fixture that came down on top of all 24 valves at once and he would put the keepers in by hand and then release the the fixture and then take a mallet, as you did, and pound the end of each valve to make sure keepers were seated. I asked him how often he found one that was not seated properly, he said he never had, then he hit the next valve with the mallet and the spring went flying as the keepers were not seated properly ... he looked at me ... I smiled and shrugged and moved on. So that is an important part of cylinder head assembly.

Just insane amount of detail in this builds. My father owns a shop in Croatia. We basically do little bit of everything and try to do the job with the best possible quality. We don't do whole engines that often. But head reconditioning, and head gaskets are quite common. And this video just showed me that we do lousy job 😂. Valve seats are redone with diamond paste and half rotary tool (I have no idea how is it called). Checked by putting gasoline over the valve and checking that there is no leak (without spring mounted) Head is resurfaced on that rotary tool this guys just sad I won't make good enough surface, and without this rings. And block is cleaned with some sandpaper if it isn't in worped. So my question is. How much of quality and longevity are we loosing this way?? I am genuinely interested and would love to improve our process of building heads. Oh and I had apsolutey no idea about valve recession 😂😂. I mean, we aren't machine shop. Just few guy doing it the best way they know. So any advice is greatly appreciated
