I think they do the pedal slow response because this engine is ridiculously powerful for one! They probably want to slow the response a little to keep you from getting out of control and spinning out, and protecting themselves a little too. This one here is a high output powerstroke so were talking about 500 horsepower and 1200 pound feet of torque from the factory in a 6,000 lb truck! That is really alot of power! 25 years ago when the 7.3 was the best motor of its day they only came with 250hp and 520 tq which was just fine to get you moving along especially with a 12,000 trailer behind the truck, it would pull it with no hesitation. All of these engines have doubled & tripled their power in the last two decades. You have 4 cylinder turbo engines with 300 hp nowadays! The pedal monster 8s an amazing product for sure. He shold definitely consider getting the i-dash too so he can monitor vitals and have more information at his disposal. Good job on the oil analysis from Blackstone(i didnt realize they were 6 wks behind tho) guess you gotta go to (Lakes)Speed diagnostics now. I'm sure you'll get close to 6 -7k oil change intervals when using quality oil. Thats such a beautiful looking truck hes got there! I love the stance, tires and the glacier grey color. Just an amazing Limited HO Powerstroke SuperDuty! 👌🏻👍🏻🛠️🔧🛢️💪🏻💨 ✊🏻🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸✊🏻

Put a Pedal Monster on my F350 with the 7.3 gas engine. Set it to Sport 3. The best thing that it did was make the drive modes actually matter in terms of driving feel. Eco now feels like what normal should feel like, so when I'm around town and/or in a lot of traffic and don't want the pedal too touchy, eco is perfect. Normal now has some nice extra get up and go, and significantly more responsiveness overall, great for the highway and paved country roads. And tow/haul is insane, almost nothing between my foot and the throttle giving me everything I want it to and then some. My truck has 430 horsepower and 485 ft lbs of torque and with the monster in tow/haul, you feel it. All the haters who knock throttle controllers have not driven a big heavy truck with a Pedal Monster installed. I will never take this thing off, and always have one in my trucks moving forward.

Every fleet I worked with up here in northern Alberta Canada in the oil and gas industry changed the oil every 7500-10,000km/ 4600-6200 miles. Winter ambient temperatures get down to -40F sometimes for a couple of weeks and the highway you have windchill to worry about, so the trucks are left running 24/7. Hours at idle kill engines, but when you have no choice you take no chances. Engine heaters used when its -20 to -30C but after that you run it constantly.

Why do you think we run the engine and bunk Webastos while the engine is running to keep drivers from freezing and insulate intakes, wrap glycol lines and insulation packs around the engine and block off radiators with a winter front? Certainly not because its hot outside. Look at a windchill chart and see what the temp does for every mph of wind. Its not getting warmer. Your diffs can freeze solid overnight at the truckstop with a 5 mph wind at -40F. Come back and educate me when you have 30 years field experience. EGR Filter is a great idea! I really wish they would do something like that for DI Gasoline cars to stop the carbon build up coming from the crank case breather being routed to the intake from the factory. Even better than the EGR filter would probably be doing something like the Speed of Air pistons direct from factory. Maybe you wouldn't even need the EGR with those to pass emissions?

In my look around the general consensus is that while the SOA pistons do net you extra efficiency but they are also dropping egt temperatures(I think Dave also has touched upon that in a video or a short I don't remember), my personal concern is if that's actually lower combustion temperature or more extraction of the power, because if it is the former that means it's actually helping produce soot clogging the dpf sooner and actually taking more effort to heat up the exhaust for regeneration time (remember lower combustion temp more soot less NOx, higher temp less soot more NOx) so they would require tuning actually but I've seen no one talking about that... Now manufacturers not adopting it its either a time issue with R&D, emissions or a cost issue with other modifications that are needed to compliment them...
@marcgirard7551
@marcgirard7551 Ай бұрын
@@Velkanis the data I’ve seen would indicate the lower EGT is a result of more efficient combustion resulting in more power produced. There’s been many reports or significant low-to-midrange torque increases at full and partial throttle with better fuel economy accompanying that. Also, claims are that oil changes show less soot and cleaner oil suggesting potential for longer drain intervals. My guess is major OEMs have been reticent to invest in R&D for these types of pistons because they’ve been scared witless by the environmental movement that the IC engine would legislated out of existence within 10 years. It’s a shame.
@Google_Is_Evil
@Google_Is_Evil Ай бұрын
Improving swirl to improve complete fuel burning like the SOA pistons do, will help up to a point to limit NOx emissions. For DI gasoline cars there are two sources of the crap accumulating in the intake ports. 1. PCV. Crankcase ventilation needs to be directed back to the intake to make sure unburnt carbohydrates (engine oil vapors) are not sent into the atmosphere. Most engine construction and tuning demands this and just venting into the open air will mess up both the tune and the way the engine gets rid of gasses, resulting in more engine wear and (illegal) emissions. Usually, with a new proper engine and adequate oil separation, this is not causing a lot of crap to accumulate, but bad maintenance, short drives and inadequate engineering can make this a big problem. 2. Actual EGR containing soot from the engine burning oil. Once oil gets into the combustion chamber, be it "natural", due to engine wear or improper oil separation from the PCV, a gasoline engine will not burn off this oil properly, but mainly turn it into soot and tar, which will stick to your inlet ports and valves when it happens to be redirected by the EGR. Knowing these sources and how much they contribute to inlet fauling, stopping EGR on DI engines seems like something that will only help for inlet fouling in conditions where the engine is already not performing the way it should and would likely require extensive repair or redisign to solve the root problem. Having said that, somewhere in the early 2000s, many gasoline engine manufacturers moved from EGR to variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust to come to the same effect, having part of the exhaust gasses remain in the combustion chamber for the next cycle to lower burn temperature, to reduce NOx emissions. Some don't have EGR, some do, but the amount of gas going through EGR is a lot lower than it would be without the VVT solution. I am not educated enough in (USA market) diesel engines to know how much of the VVT solution has made it into cars and small trucks there, or how effective it would be on a diesel engine. I do know that this technology requires separate camshafts for inlet and outlet since the timing for inlet and outlet need to be independently varied along the rev/load ranges, so many of the light truck engines would not be able to use it in their current configuration.

Full disclosure: I work for an automotive manufacturer that has safety and the environment in their company motto. All statements and views below are my own and do not represent my employer. First, great hearing Gale is coming to visit. I think you two are very in line with your views on what is "proper" technology. Second, throttle response programming is directed by: 1. marketing, they want a predictable vehicle that will not scare any customer no matter how "chicken" they are. For that you need a throttle pedal that will baby in the torque at lower depressions. No matter how much of an automotive enthusiast you are, the bookkeeper, the owner of the company, the mother of the person driving the vehicle, they are all taken into account when making sure the vehicle feels "safe" and "predictable". All it takes is one "bad" review for the marketing department to say it needs to be toned down. Another marketing factor is that for most modern vehicles, engines are shared amongst various vehicles that have different "marketing" performance levels. You can't have the base model respond just as quick to the throttle as the one with the "sports" package, even if the hardware is identical. More "marketing" horsepowers? Same deal, if the 250 has the same engine as the 350 but the 350 has more marketed torque and horsepower, you will limit throttle response on the 250 just so the salesguy can have the customer go "you can really feel the power" on the test drive around the block, where they will not hit anything close to the max torque and horsepower figures of even the lowest ranged vehicle. All they are feeling is the difference in throttle response, not whatever marketing deemed would be a good power level to sell the car at at a given price point. There is money to be made upselling to a "faster" model because profit levels on the base model are lower than on the higher packaged ones, or the next bigger vehicle in the same category. "Helping" customers decide to upgrade by artificially making the pedal response snappier is totally normal amongst all car manufacturers. 2. Emissions. Emissions tests are usually "manipulatable" enough for the vehicle to pass even when driven by a person and not a computer, but if real life fuel consumption is too far of the "official" numbers, both consumers and governments will start screaming. You getting a "responsive" pedal with the pedal monster will mean that the engine will use a lot more fuel accelerating quickly to the torque demand you give it. I have driven one of our most "eco" cars and the pedal response of that car felt like it was made of a thin rubber band connected to a geriatric turtle, walking over to the throttle valve to finally open it. Worse, the valve was sprung heavily so the moment the turtle stopped pushing, it would shut immediately and the turtle would be pulled back by the rubber band, making it have to walk all the way to the valve again before it could start trying to open it again. Poor turtle...The exact same hardware sits in a one level up car, which happens to also be tuned to a higher horsepower figure. Pedal response was much better in that. Nothing close to "exciting", but at least the turtle was not part of the driveline anymore. Often, the difference between the performance levels in modern cars is purely programming. Nothing complicated, just the throttle response map (torque request) an absolute torque limiter and sometimes a top speed limiter. That is three of literally thousands of variables that are put in the computer that make the engine turn pedal depression into "chootch". The absolute torque limiter is there only to deter people that bypass the pedal by for instance a pedal monster, or that are smart enough to reprogram the computer by editing the pedal map directly. Speed limit is either a safety/environment marketing thing, or for some legal reason, like fitting tyres that have a speed rating or local government demands. You pay big bucks for a "stage one" tune to some tuning company only to get these three maps modified, no actual tuning taking place, just the artificial performance blocks removed.

Dave, I know that you know exactly why the dealers and manufacturers don't put these filters on the EGR systems. The service department of dealers make huge amounts of money for their services, and they don't want to jeopardize that. The last thing a car manufacturer wants is for you to drive your vehicle until the wheels fall off of it. They rely on people getting rid of their cars every three to five years or whenever the warranty expires. I'm still driving my 2001 Dodge Cummins powered 3/4 T 4X4 with 274K miles on it and my 2012 Jeep Wrangler with 77.8K miles on it. I'm also a pretty fair do-it-yourself mechanic but now am 80 and getting up and down from under these vehicles is a little more difficult than it used to be. Buying a new anything is out of the question.

With the new diesels you have the egr pumping carbon back in the intake, quite a bit of that carbon gets into the oil past the rings through the cross hatching, if you don't change your oil on a very regular basis even if the lab says your test is good, the carbon settles to the bottom and will sludge up your oil pan, eventually it will clog the oil pick up tube and there goes your bearings.

I don't mess with the track mode (due to not showing off with it-lol), I even told my wife (significant other), that track mode equals "karma" which i don't want to mess with. Simple answer on "why don't the manufacturers program trucks like this?". Government regulations on fuel economy. Better throttle response equals more fuel used. Under-performing means less fuel consumption.

Just got another new Hyundai Tucson (2025), last one was 7500 miles for oil change. New one is 8000. I’ve been working on cars,trucks,and heavy equipment for 50 years. I’m a firm believer of the 3000 mile change (equipment and dump trucks) 250 hours. I’d go 5000 on my car only because I use Pennzoil platinum full synthetic. I lease all my cars now because I really don’t like crawling around them anymore and i don’t want to spend thousands on scanners, hell I still have a dwell meter and timing light in my tool box🤣🤣🤣

Some of the oil change interval depends on if you take long trips or short ones also. Oil breaks down faster the more heat up/cool down cycles it has on it. The heat up/cool down also breaks down your oil

Car manufacturers are in the business of selling vehicles. If people aren't buying new vehicles, then those manufacturers aren't making money. They don't want your vehicle to last. They just want you to get through the warranty period, so if the vehicle breaks down afterwards they want you to come buy a new vehicle. It's that simple.

Great video. I believe that Banks is hands down the best. During the video the question came up about "why doesn't the manufacturer do this?" I want to ask why does Ford continue to use a Bosch CP4 high pressure fuel pump? This is the biggest reason (I am a retired mechanic with 40 years of on the job experience) that I eliminated Ford for my personal diesel truck choice. If you install the SS Fueled disaster prevention kit or better yet their replacement pump you void any and all factory warranties. Why does Ford continue to use a high pressure fuel pump that has proven to be a failure? When this pump fails, not if how much will that cost the customer? My guess is about $12,000. I really expected a response here but I suppose I am putting Dave in an awkward position asking. I imagine he has to be very careful in what he says having Ford owners as customers.

I 100% agree with getting a UOA for oil change interval decisions. Everyone’s usage case is different, I’d like to know what some people are doing to justify the cost of doing 5,000 mile oil changes in a diesel. I do 18,000 mile oil changes on my 6.7 powerstroke. I could go further but that’s my comfort zone

@@unaffiliated_x9279 I haven’t seen any video of my truck, my usage case and my oil analysis results. But seriously, I do an oil analysis every oil change and I’m coming up on a quarter million miles and all I do is tow trailers all over the southeast and sometimes out west. At $200 an oil change I would double my cost doing 9000 mile oil changes or more than double my cost if I did five like some people say and here I am at 200 and something thousand miles with absolutely zero problems out of this power stroke. I’m still at 700-900 mile per regen.

So many people do not understand that oil analysis is the ONLY way to know for sure. @@hokie9910 that’s exactly what I’m saying. Everybody wants a blanket statement that you should change your oil at a specified number, but it all depends on your own oil analysis and your own usage case.

I'm with you and Lake Speed on oil change intervals and oil analysis, it's the life blood of a engine. Quick question on the Banks Monster Pedal, these trucks must have some kind of torque management system to protect the drivetrain on the lower gears. How does this play out when the Monster Pedal is installed, those drive shaft center bearing hangers don't look to stout.

That being said, i do my oil changes every 5K with full synthetic, because i have a turbocharger. The oil is clean at 3K, so there's no point in changing it then. 5K, it's starting to get dirty.

My Duramax has an hour meter. I think your hour meter should be factored in. If you drive 3,000 driving cross country in overdrive is a lot easier on your motor oil whereas if you do only short trips in a city with a lot of starts starts and starts 3,000 is definitely time to change your oil. Divide your miles by your hours and you can figure out your average speed. The lower the speed the more likely your oil needs to be changed. Cold weather starts are also hard on your diesel.
