I had to take a refresher course on this one Dave. I have the Tony Joe version on a cassette tape that I played today. Mostly got it right but the bridge I was getting wrong. And the little fill riffs too. I’ll get it right now. Thanks for all your excellent voice btw.

It was 71 or 72 I was in high school and had went with a friend to visit his older brother in Atl Ga. We lived across the line in small town ala. Rode the trailway bus up and back, it ran in front of my friends house so pick up, drop off right at the house. During the day big brother drop us off in downtown atl on his way to work, then picked us up that afternoon. Two 13 year olds on the wild streets of atl, what a time we had. After a few days it was time to return home to ala. Last bus out around 11pm, it was raining and we each copped one can of beer from this older guy we met on the bus. A girl behind us had a radio, this song, rainy night in Ga, tony joe white was playing as bus pulled out. I will never forget that night, those days roaming atl, we were beat, plus that one can of beer put us feeling a little low I guess, the bus, the rain, tony joe white, something that will always be with me, even after all this time. Thanks for sharing this lesson. As I get older, I think about my younger days a lot. I've had a good life, I'm hoping I still have a few years to go, but I so miss those days so long ago.

Great job Dave and thanks. I've always loved this song and I'm finally getting it down on guitar with the help of your lesson. I'm still struggling a bit to understand that "stacked" chord you showed us. I just can't seem to get it to sound the same as when you played it. I'll keep working on it but thanks again.

Back again with huge thanks as I have had a little try and getting it ..slowly. Thought I’d mention a version by Boz Skaggs aided by a beautiful harmonica and accordion backing but sorry I am unable to give a link right now...but your lesson gives me that beginning to getting the song at last hopefully...

Dave. Love your quick tutorials. I started playing guitar in 2017 and working my way through all the classics from late 60. I loved the Randy Crawford version of this song but the acoustic version of TJW is really the best acoustic rendition. I think he uses Gmaj7 rather than G (xx5432) which keeps the melancholy feel through the progression. Thanks again for unlocking these cool tunes!
@johnross57224 жыл бұрын
Your right , I was watching that video, but boy the dude has mitts on him just huge hands. His thumb just hangs over the top like a capo
@DavesGuitarChannel4 жыл бұрын
I prefer the Brook Benton version. Holds nostalgia for me which is why I do these old classics in the first place. Brook's version just uses the G but with a warbly organ under it. When I play it in my acoustic band, I use the maj7 but didnt want to here to keep it more in check with the record.
@gortagnan Жыл бұрын
Thanks fo the reasoning (maj 7th Or G) and clarity over yr choice ie yr personal preference/version..I will listen to all versions !
@robertbowles780 Жыл бұрын
The G you are playing seems to be leaving the A string open so adding the 2nd or am I just missing something. I like to get the details/voicing correct. I do realize there are multiple ways of doing it but just asking about what you are doing.

Interestingly I’ve just watched a video clip where Tony credits Brook Benton for developing the definitive version of the song as he was not that pleased with his own initial recording/arrangement-ya learn something new every day :-)
