On those spark plug wires that you had to cut to lenght and crimp the end on. I think all you had to do was cut to the lenght you needed, crimp the end on the end on the wire and slide it straight into that 90° boot until the connector was at the end where you attach it to the top of the distributor cap. You didn't need to pull the wire around that 90 degree bend attach the terminal and then slide it back around that 90 degree bend. Safe travels and good diagnosing Dave. You have an awesome dog. 🤪

There's a ring with 8 pointed ends under the distributor shaft. They are so small that they sometimes just rust away. Common problem. When I change a distributor, I bumb the engine over until the rotor points straight ahead. Put the new one in in same position taking note of where the vacuum advance is pointing.

When I was in the Army our motor pool didn't have a timing light. I learned to set timing with a test light. I also had to make a test light out of a tail light socket and a piece of broom handle. That was 48 years ago. I wonder if they have a timing light now??? Great job Dave! Safe travels to all.

Love the vids Dave. If you ever have trouble with those HEI distributor modules again, be sure to use computer cpu heatsink thermal paste like noctua or arctic. The thermal grease supplied with those distributors is terrible. I always carry some distributor parts in my car when I head out of town. Also I haven't seen all your videos, but you should get yourself a big auxiliary transmission cooler for the R.V they are inexpensive and make those older transmissions bulletproof, they generate a lot of heat moving those big R.V around. Great vids.

Glad it runs! Nice shade tree fix!. You should at the very least mark the position of the old distri utor in relation to the intake as well and the rotor position on the distributor before removing it and set the new one in the exact same place. You're kinda guessing on the timing. I second borrowing an Autozone timing light at the first opportunity considering the trip ahead of you. I would also carry a spare 4 pin HEI module and some heat sink compound with you. They're cheap and usually are the culprit and likely what failed on yours. Heck, I'd pop some new components in your old distributor when your hanging out in the desert so you have a working OEM spare. Carb cleaner works great to slide those boots over the wires. Safe travels!!
