Before I retired this year I was a paramedic in the city Roy Clark lived and my partner and I were once dispatched to his home shortly before he died because he had been sick for awhile. We didn't take him to the hospital but we got to chat with him for about an hour. Very pleasant humble man who wanted to know about us than talk about himself

He was a regular on the TV Variety Show Hee Haw, which featured country music and hilarious hillbilly comedy skits. You should try to watch some of the episodes. He and Buck Owens headlined the show, and they were both great musicians. Johnny Carson once said it was hard to believe that one person could have that much talent. He could play anything with strings, was really funny and he could sing. Yes, he had some high charting songs back in the late 60's early 70's. They were on the country charts but still sold a ton. He was co host of the tv show Hee Haw. It played in synbdication for years. He was a great person, too. He called Tulsa his home for many years and still owned a recording studio here at the time of his passing. I remember in the 1970's and 80's, he sponsored a celebrity golf tournament that benefitted a children't hospital in Tulsa. He even sponsored a race car. It is kind of sad that whenever the great guitar players are listed, rarely are country artists even mentioned where in reality there were some great ones. Eric Clapton says the best guitar player alive is Albert Lee. A sessions player from the U.K. who played mostly country but was in Clapton's band for years. Oh, I have gone on long enough. It is time to give Roy, Glenn Campbell, Jim Stafford, Chet Atkins, tommy Emmanuel, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill and Alber Lee some of the recognition they deserve.
@marksanders8028Ай бұрын
Check him out on dueling banjos.
@stevenewcomer8837Ай бұрын
Jim Stafford is another world class guitarist that is also a comedian. You should check him out. Roy Clark co-hosted the TV program Hee Haw for several decades with Archie Campbell that started in the early 70’s. John 5 credits watching Hee Haw growing up with Roy, Glen Campbel, Jim Stafford, and other greats guest starring as his inspiration to learn to play guitar and other stringed instruments.

That's right. Jimmy Dean was one of the first crossover media stars, a Texan who went from leading a country music band to hosting a national TV show and acting. He also happened to be Roy Clark's former boss, who'd fired Roy because he couldn't show up to gigs on time. But he later put Roy on TV because he knew his talent.
