This super high action also affects intonation. One may get it okay at the 12th fret, but at the 5th and 18th fret it'll be like sh!t. Have a happy, healthy and musical 2021. ✨

I love these videos. I'm trying to learn how to do basic set ups and every video of Dave's that I watch, I pick up another little nugget of knowledge. I think I'm more impressed with his handling of instruments than I am of musicians using the instruments.

That pre-adjustment string height looked like something you'd find on an upright bass. Holy crap that looked like it would be awful to play for any length of time.
@offbeatbassgear3 жыл бұрын
Apparently James Jamerson's P-bass' action was unusually high, but if you're a legend, hey, do whatever you want. Jamerson stated it helped him transition from the upright to electric.

I've been in the studio when the bass player was playing the strings soo hard that the strings were hitting the pickup. didn't notice until playback. There was 2 hours worth of work down the tubes. had to adjust the bass and I redid the bass lines without him. Listen to what Dave's saying.

New to bass after 30 years of guitar, finally learning this setup knowledge I should’ve learned way back, love your style Dave, no bullsh*t! Listened to an excellent interview with Gail Ann Dorsey, who describes her playing style as very light, and getting lighter - and at nearly age 60 she’s still one of the most kick-ass rock players ever, her hands have survived 40+ years as a session legend. “Digging in?” Nah, she just knows how to play...

In th early-mid 90s I heard Tony Franklin at a bass clinic at the old Bass Centre in Hollywood. He told us that he loves high action on his fretless and plays it hard and loud. He had been playing with the Firm at that point.

I love Dave but I'm a player with some weird setups and I make it all work because I set up all of my personal guitars. It's very easy to DIY because of people like Dave that has shared his knowledge and talent on KZbin. There's no rules, only guidelines. I've learned this from watching Dave. Thank you Dave🤗
@michaelpeuplie64643 жыл бұрын
The only person that could ever get away playing with a high action like that was probably James Jamerson. Only because he came from double bass and liked to dig in a bit.
@Kylora21123 жыл бұрын
But if you set up *correctly* to dig, that's fine. If your action is a ¼" on the the 17th fret and using a regular nut, you just have no idea what you're doing :)
