Sup Dave...i actually got me start in the paint and art world bizz 40 years ago by painting the Fender logo in paint for Ric Ocasek (the Cars) on his headstock cause he didn't like the sticker. Some folks just like the added touch. Rock on and nice work with a smile you do. H.L.

My first guitar was a 70s Mustang that we found at a flea market. It had black lacquer over that polyester dip coat. The lacquer was badly cracked and wiped off with acetone but the acetone didn’t affect the polyester at all. The sealer was so thick that you could see light between your finger and the wood that seemed to be about 2mm.

I had a couple old 20s & 30s radios with the big wood cabinets the size of steamer trunks that I wanted to clean up. Murphy's Oil Soap is the thing to use. Comes in a liquid concentrate and already mixed. Works great and doesn't hurt varnish or shellac. Smells good, too.

I love that we can get Fender water slide decals. I have replaced a few myself. I’ve done a few “Les Paul Model” decals, even though they’re screen printed at the factory . They look great after a few coats of nitro. Can’t even tell a repair was done. That being said, I don’t like the thought of scammers getting one over on an uneducated guitar buyer. It happens. Great jorb there Davie!

RaxFx such a pakRat hoarder here (because of childhood poverty!) my first reaction was! “Dude! In the yard! I coulda gave you $5 or $6 for that! Find a homeless kid, craigs free list! “ but actually= I’ve found entire working guitars on Craigslist for $25 dollars. Actually, half my guitars were just junk people gave me. Back in the 80s though, you’d have had to find someone that needed it. (I’m thinking of ordering my bass player a purple maple tiger Chickenbacher bass/ 12string off AliExpresss just because we can’t afford a real one and they’re only like ? $300-$400 bucks? We really live in an age of excess

weren't some of your video's from years back refinish films that you did behind a plastic screen using an airbrush? I ask because I was looking for them for tips on how to do mine on a 3 P-90 guitar headstock a few months back. I see now that I'm going to have to do more coats to make it nice, thick, and shiny like you mentioned. 23:01 Liked & shared 8-|

@goodun29744 жыл бұрын
Joby, 409 is truly harsh stuff. My go-to cleaner for smoke residue is OxyClean crystals dissolved in warm water, with a little bit of dish soap added. I don't know how safe it is for an unpainted wood surface, but it's excellent for cleaning my deck planking and (stained) cedar siding. Most wood cleaners for decks and siding are just overpriced chlorine laundry bleach.

I think Fender logos from the 70s are the best looking ones to me
@Metalcop51504 жыл бұрын
Back in the 70's Fender used a different finish than they had in the 50's and 60's. An unfortunate side effect was that it reacted badly with the headstock decals, when it was applied over them. (sort of what you stated in the video) So they continued to use the new, durable poly finish on the rest of the guitar and used the old lacquer to the headstocks so they could apply a decal, then clear over it. I have a late 70's strat that has this same different aged finishes effect.

@scottbogfoot4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in this case especially, the logo don't matter. The paint being gone and all. As long as the correct logo replacement is used and application matches that of the original. Just like replacing the badges on a restro car, you don't want to, original is always best but as long as it's the right part and right fit and is not being passed off as something it isn't then it's ok.

Question: When you get this type of work, where there is damage/tooling/aging from either prior owners/manufacturers/repairmen, do you ever need to ask the owner if they want to keep that look left from its history? I could imagine someone wanting that completely gone, or also leaving it there. Some of these vids over the years feel like art restoration, how/when do you/they decide what is left untouched?
