Hot version of a great Rock piece in one scenical presence among the most gritty of DB. Enthralling performance of his Band. Magical play of lights. Bowie is *BOWIE*...

The Starman, a master at the height of his power with a brilliant band and stunning visuals. Reeves Gabrels on guitar is as though he has come to visit earth. His torturing, screaming sound really took these 96/97shows to otherworldly levels.

There are some white hot live versions of this song and this one is right up there with the best. One reason is Reeves Gabrels, he is pyrotechnic and took these 96/97 shows to such heights. Ive loved all Bowie's guitarists since Mick Ronson and the first time i saw Bowie was the incredible 78 tour when i was 18yrs.Guitarist then was Adrian Belew, and he was brilliant, esp Station To Station. Gabrels was a firestorm. In fact this show Phoenix Festival 96 was one of his greatest performances in a shortened set. His closing song, the magnificent Moonage Daydream is my most loved version at Phoenix 96, along with Mick Ronsons beauty in 73. The hugely packed crowd were treated to a visual audio supernova, you can hear their roar after the final notes of Moonage. Bowie and band with one of their truly great displays of power.

I was there at Phoenix 1996 and this song was massive! The sound was so heavy. I've seen Slayer, Metallica, Sepultura etc, but the sound coming from this song was that heavy I thought it was going to burn us! Me and my mate were just stood, open mouthed, not able to believe what we were seeing and hearing, and we weren't even big Bowie fans. I have seen and heard many versions of this song, but yes, this is THE BEST!

If you've seen such bands live and dig this song, you may like the very respectable cover of this song by the Norwegian band Pagan's Mind (on one of their albums and on their live DVD). Approved and enjoyed by the master back then, from what I know... kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip_HdJykfdCLaMU

I thought his 50th birthday version with the Foo Fighters was the shit, but this one is too. What an amazing performance by the entire group.

For sure one of his very best performances of this song, in general I think the 96 tour was his best.

@Scoobydoonut Fortunately we live in a time where technology allows us to operate a kind of "time machine", as if time & space were the mind's illusion (as indeed they are ...). Here is that what is happened elsewhere and at another time becomes our "now". If then, the greatness of an Author, by itself, lives in an endless present, is a marvel! Even for the lovely care of every detail, how the language of lights and colors, the message becomes live contact, a delight. Many thanks dear Carol.

@SenseOfDoubt1 Thank you very much, dear Michaela. I agree, this performance is really special. From what I could see, carefully checking, it has not been published so far. Also the concert in Phoenix online does not include this magnificent piece. For this reason I have decided to upload it, because (in my opinion) deserves a due attention: yet 16 years later testifies, sheds at light all the incredible strength of Bowie in his artistic splendor.

Thank for pointing out this particular performance! It is great! I think only the whole concert has been uploaded until now.

@SenseOfDoubt1 As you say, it seems strange. I repeat, obviously, I also checked "the uploaded Phoenix performance on YT", but if you find it somewhere here, I would be really grateful to you for information. A hug, dear friend.

@playwithastar Ah really, it isn't even included in the uploaded Phoenix performance on YT? This is strange because i have got that concert and there it is included. Anyway, thank you for checking this and uploading it to unveil another diamond to a broader audience.
