This is 2004, did he have cancer that far back?
@sofiamarie91366 ай бұрын
@@hornplayerchrisfrom what I understand the pancreatic cancer was the last 18 months of his life. But the concert here was the night he collapsed right afterwards from a heart blockage, I believe. I think I read that he was cold and borrowed a sweatshirt (one of the symptoms), and he sort of rubs his chest every now and then in this song (don’t know if that’s a typical movement for him or if it was related to feeling pressure or pain). And despite all of that, his voice remains absolutely incredible here. 💜

Meg Dunphy One time I was getting ready to do a gig with my guitarist boyfriend. And just moments before we started to rehearse for a soundcheck he started having heart palpitations that he almost had the same incident happen to him onstage. Luckily I took him backstage to lay down and rest for a while before he was well enough to perform onstage. Like Bowie, my boyfriend was also a trooper. Still this video is painful to watch yet David is a strong trooper even though he looks unwell onstage.

WOW. An INCREDIBLE performance of Heroes made all the more incredible by the fact that he was having a heart attack throughout the concert. Heroes was the last song of the set, followed by three encores, the last song being Ziggy Stardust. After they left the stage, David collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. He was misdiagnosed and given muscle relaxants, which he was not happy to take because he'd been clean and sober for many years by that point and the effect of the medication reminded him of being high. Two days before this gig, he played a gig in Prague, where it was unbearably hot in the venue. He was a few songs into the set and while performing the song Reality, he stopped singing and turned to Gail Ann Dorsey with a stricken look on his. He'd been sweating profusely and looked terrible. He was helped off the stage and the band played a couple more songs. He came back on stage and sang a few more songs, but couldn't go any further and the show was cut short. As soon as they got backstage he collapsed again, was rushed to a hospital and misdiagnosed, the doctorsnot finding that he had a heart attack. It wasn't until after this show that his actual condition became known. That he survived those two shows is nothing short of remarkable. Here in this video, especially toward the beginning, you can see he's not looking well. He looks exhausted and stressed; he seems preoccupied. As the song builds in intensity, he meets the moment and fully delivers the song. But to think that he could have literally died at either of those concerts or at any time during that two day stretch, it's mind boggling. Here it is, May 25, 2021and it's been five years, four and a half months since he passed - and it's still hard to believe he's not with us anymore; it still saddens me. David Bowie was the greatest songwriter of the rock era. Look at the sheer quantity of GREAT albums he created - Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Station to Station, Low, Heroes, Scary Monsters, Buddha of Suburbia, Outside and Blackstar. That's TEN albums that are at a 9.5 - 10/10 level. And then there's Diamond Dogs, Let's Dance, Earthling, Heathen, Reality and The Next Day - all really good albums, not to mention Space Oddity (AKA David Bowie), The Man Who Sold the World (now called Metrobolist), Pin Ups, Lodger, Black Tie White Noise, Hours and Young Americans. Even Tonight and Never Let Me Down had some good songs, as did the 1967 Deram record label album David Bowie. That's 26 albums of which about 23 are good to really good to excellent to classic. What other artist or band has THAT MANY great albums and songs under their belt?

I agree with everything you write. Bowie was a genius with no equal within pop music. He was also extremely brave and the way he handled both his heart attack snd his final disease and death should be an inspiration to everyone.

Nobody has worked harder than David! I have loved him for more than 50 years. I saw him with his red hair on Midnight Special, and that was it for me hook line sinker! Hard to watch this last performance of Heroes knowing that He had to sense something was wrong in his body as he boarded that stage and gave what I thought was his best performance almost as if he knew it would be his last. He truly gave it all he had and it showed. All I can say is that voice oh that amazing God given voice....so powerful it could take down some buildings so distinctive that blindfolded you would always know it is Bowie. We’ve never had a voice so full of range, velvety smooth deepest baritone and falsetto at times fully amplified, no mic needed!! I think he under valued it but I will always miss it. No one could compare...Great loss indeed😪 thank god for the memories that will live on thru the generations to come🥰..God’s speed DB✝️🌸✝️

You can notice that the skin around his mouth is turning more blue-ish as he sings "heroes". This phenomenon is the sign of severe heart failure: at this point David's heart struggles to pump blood and send it back to oxygenate his body. No surprise he suffered a heart attack minutes after! But a "normal" individual would have felt dizzy and really weak on his legs, provided this massive heart malfunction, David could easily have fainted or at least left the stage to lie down : how did he manage to perform his song until the end?!? This guy is definitely incredible!!!

I have three points that I would like to address: 1. David Bowie is wearing the hottest pants during this show. I don't know how, but I think this outfit is now my favorite Bowie outfit. Dem thighs. 2. If I were a performer, I would most definitely be wearing outfits like this all the time. Screw fancy dresses and suits, give me a freakin' sweatshirt. 3. This song and this performance is so.. strong. It's a simple song, he's practically just talking, but goddamn. Gives me chills. It's absolutely wonderful. (Also, thanks to reading comments, I realize he wasn't fully up to par. He still looks damn hot, and I would still wear this outfit. David Bowie is my favorite.)

That's the problem with heart symptoms - it's not as cut and dry as the movies make it out to be. Mine was an odd pressure. Not painful - just weird. There was no pain in my left arm and really no pain anywhere. Just pressure building somewhere in my torso. But you take it easy for a few minutes and it goes away. So, no problem right? I got mine checked out on a Saturday afternoon expecting to be sent home. Two days later I got quintuple bypass surgery. Yeah - it sucked. But better than the alternative. David Bowie - like me - was extraordinarily lucky. Many don't get the warning shots. We got 12 more years with him after this show.

He looks very unconfortable!

Yup, he was in full blown heart attack here. You can clearly see his discomfort, and many times reached his heart with his hands. Obviously he didn't know what he was experiencing, but I believe he was a bit worried at this point. But, Bowie being Bowie, he went on till he couldn't hold back any longer.

I was looking up some video clips of Heroes when this video popped up. I saw this was from Hurricane Festival. I didn't know this was his last full performance before he retired. Minus his performance, he sounded like nothing was wrong. Who would had thought a few songs later he would collapse backstage. I just don't know how the doctors didn't see this. Do want to say this. Its amazing how Alan Rickman, Glenn Frey(well if it wasn't for him and the Eagles being honored for the Kennedy Center Honors award, we probably wouldn't had know he was sick and how serious it was until he died) and David kept their illness a secret. I applaud them and their family because I know it had to be hard to keep that a secret. RIP David.

Exemplary performance, DB had true charisma live on stage. I'd just like to give highlight to the lead guitarist - Gerry Leonard out of Dublin (Google that name for full details) That guy played that SG classic with style.

Have tears in my eyes while seeing that, even after all the years. It was such a great concert. The greatest privilege I could imagine when talking about concerts and one of the best experiences. Great memories and thank you for sharing that!!

The tears will never stop - both mine and the entire world's Thank you for this neulevel This track not only indelibly changed the path along which popular music's development proceeded, profoundly influencing (not my words) the pantheon of musicians at the time, and that followed. More importantly. it also showed the world what could have, and should have been - I was there when the wall went down, and this still feels it's heralding anthem and my tears obscure the screen as I type this

My first David Bowie concert was Ziggy Stardust in 1972. My last was the Reality tour in Denver, CO. What an incredible artist & performer! I did 2 tribute portraits after his death. The sadness remains...I'll bet he is entertaining the angels on high. RIP David Jones

Thanks so much for posting, it's terribly sad and heartbreaking to watch this, knowing what happened, but it just shows what a strength and determination make up this beautiful and creative genius, there's only one David Bowie and no one can ever replace him. Brilliant, powerful and poignant performance, forever and always the best.
