A true shaman, in the form of a visionary musician. He seems to look into us, through space at the unseen, where he raised many spirits, showed us our own shadows, our divinity, commonality and restored us to what otherwise may have been lost. Because he was singing this song, in the city where it was written and meant so much to him and the Berliners. Since he sang it at the wall and the east Germans were on the other side singing it with him. After the fall of the wall, every concert he had in Berlin afterwards, he knew they were now there with him, singing it together. He said himself, singing Heroes anywhere else in the world, did not give him the same feeling as it did in Berlin. David loved Berlin, just as much as Berlin loved David.

That dude was so great. I watched him in Philadelphia at the electric factory in the 90s, and he just kept saying do you have a little time? He went through his whole history musically. @@BK-qn9gi that was the best tip you ever got huh? I mean I wanted to my brother to go with me on the second night they were selling tickets at those ticket sales places for $40. He didn't want to go boy was tat a mistake. That was actually the third time I saw him one time he was at the spectrum and it was really bad bad sound system and he seemed all really tired and it wasn't very good at all. Then I saw him again at the spectrum during the let's dance tour and it was a lot better, he was in good shape than working out and all of that. But that show at the electric factory it was probably the best concert I've ever seen and I've been to a lot of them he was really on and looked great I'm really glad I went to that to this day.

While working for a ticketing company (no longer around, sad), I worked a multi-night show of his in NC. I went to grab something to eat, instead of making a left, to eat with the building staff, I made a right. Looked different. Grabbed a plate. Sat down. This guy came over next to me and asked if he could sit down. You got it. I looked up and saw Bowie towering over me. I flashed a huge smile and just said, "of course". Initially, he thought I worked for Pepsi (the show's sponsor, because I was wearing the suit, but when I told him I worked for the ticketing company (not TM), he talked to me like I was an old friend. A neighbor. One of the most decent and genuine people on the planet. A true great guy. And a great talent that will live on in his music. As we can attest to now.

+Melissa Kelly The bassist he is bantering with in the beginning, Gail Ann Dorsey, had some really nice words to say about Bowie when interviewed by Rolling Stone after he died. Among other things she said: "He was also very funny. He had an incredible sense of humor, very witty and quick. He could have been a comedian." Read the whole piece here (it is worth it): www.rollingstone.com/music/news/david-bowie-bassist-gail-ann-dorsey-he-altered-the-course-of-my-life-20160125?page=3

he was the most charismatic man to ever walk on this planet. and a real star, of epic proportions. and yet he was so incredibly likeable, lovely and down to earth. I mean it would have been easy for him to act like the world's biggest pretentious asshole, he had every 'right' to do so, but he just didn't. he wasn't like that. he was just a wonderful, sweet soul, a really nice guy, and the epitome of the term 'gentleman'. one of the many reasons he was loved by millions. and he will be loved forever and ever...

If you watch it a few times, you'll see it is far superior to the original video, this is passionate, strong, and he truely feels this song, doesn't at just sing it. Lyrics I, I will be king And you, you will be queen Though nothing, will drive them away We can beat them, just for one day We can be heroes, just for one day And you, you can be mean And I, I'll drink all the time 'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact Yes we're lovers, and that is that Though nothing, will keep us together We could steal time, just for one day We can be heroes, forever and ever What'd you say? I, I wish you could swim Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim Though nothing, nothing will keep us together We can beat them, forever and ever Oh, we can be heroes, just for one day I, I will be king And you, you will be queen Though nothing, will drive them away We can be heroes, just for one day We can be us, just for one day I, I can remember (I remember) Standing, by the wall (by the wall) And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads) And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall) And the shame, was on the other side Oh, we can beat them, forever and ever Then we could be heroes, just for one day We can be heroes We can be heroes We can be heroes Just for one day We can be heroes We're nothing, and nothing will help us Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay But we could be safer, just for one day Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh, just for one day

the day Bowie died, i was stunned: none of us even knew he'd been ill. i didn't know what to do. so that evening, feeling quite alone, i found myself taking the tube to Brixton. ah of course - duh - many hundreds of fans had had the sae idea. it was like a family reunion: everyone (the old and the very young) looked you in the eye, shaking their heads, shrugging, tearful. so many people hugged me that night. candles and bowie-inspired graffiti art everywhere. and groups of people huddling, improvising his songs on many streets. some guy finished playing a song and offered me his guitar. err... well, this song (Heroes) was the only one I was confident I would remember all the chords to, so i started playing...and I was soon joined by a girl (young woman) with a small violin and a guy on a tuba! and then maybe 70 to 100 people singing along. i think we stretched it out for maybe 11 minutes. from where i stood, it sounded like the best cover of Heroes ever. i never found it on youtube, but it's a moment i'll never forget.

David Bowie arrived 1/8/1947 - BlackStar arrived 1/10/2016 - So the Monday after reading about the death of David Bowie I read Sammy Hagar (The Red Rocker) as he spoke about how David had influenced him so much and he really wished that he had met him. …So I replied to Sammy that “You did Sammy, you have met him, as once you hear David Bowie and he enters your soul, you know him and you will never be the same again, ever! - - - - I then mentioned how strange it is that when there is someone you've never met before passes, you can still feel such a loss. ….David stayed up with me many a lonely night over the last 45 years - making my bad days better - my nights brighter, all while making me a better musician. ...What a talent. - What a career. - What a loss. - What a soul and thank you for sharing it and thanks for touching mine. -J.D.Gragg We all know there is a footprint on the Moon - now we know there is one on Mars, David Bowie's.

Lady BlackStardust Daniyal Zulfiqar Well thank the both of you so much as that was a very nice and educational on many levels to have said - and you're right, as I felt it. ...My comment above happened just like that, I just started writing as a reply to Sammy hagar with absolutely no thought about it, it was if I didn't write it. ...I know, strange huh. ...I have had this experience once before and that has since became my 'creed' for my life. ...I lived a rather private proxy life and didn't get on Facebook till the very end of 2010 - (I still even use an avatar rather than my picture for my profile) then within the first year I believe - there was a famous Frenchman author and artist named Theodore Zeldman in France that contacted me in the U.S. and asked me to join the Oxford Muse. ...I was very surprised and humbled that he knew I was an "American Inventor" so he apparently knew somewhat about how people and inventors think because he asked to do the most profound thing. ....He said to step away from the computer - stop multi-tasking - slow down and think about what I really wanted to accomplish in life. ...Not problem solving, not completing a project, not a task for that day, but for my life as an entirety, so I did. So I sat down and started writing by hand about what I wanted to accomplish and how I felt about life, and that is when 'that' happened to me. I sat and wrote just without thinking really - just letting my subconscious take over. ...So after I finished it - I read it - and it was like an out-of-body experience, because I felt like I wasn't the one that wrote it! ....It was very bizarre. ....It's not too long but it would look like that on this thread, so please go to my page and read my 'Creed' it as maybe it will inspire you as your comments here has inspired me. ...And you truly have! ......Sincerely, J.D.Gragg

+JD Gragg : Concur with you totally. Did not 'discover' Bowie until early 70's in elementary Catholic school - a couple of the cool kids were into him while everybody else was into Elton John! At that point, my journey with Bowie's began. May you rest in peace knowing that you made such a positive difference in this world.

When Bowie said "I felt that" at the end of the song, he was talking to a German audience and they knew what he meant. And many of them likely saw him perform this song in 1987 right next to the Wall, 2 years before it came down. This is what Bowie said about performing Heroes in W Berlin in 1987: I’ll never forget that. It was one of the most emotional performances I’ve ever done. I was in tears. They’d backed up the stage to the wall itself so that the wall was acting as our backdrop. We kind of heard that a few of the East Berliners might actually get the chance to hear the thing, but we didn’t realize in what numbers they would. And there were thousands on the other side that had come close to the wall. So it was like a double concert where the wall was the division. And we would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side. God, even now I get choked up. It was breaking my heart. I’d never done anything like that in my life, and I guess I never will again. When we did “Heroes” it really felt anthemic, almost like a prayer. However well we do it these days, it’s almost like walking through it compared to that night, because it meant so much more.
