Michael Aslanian I think it is about an American astronaut on a mission to space. He does a space walk. At some point things go sideways and he is lost to space. And he is aware until he runs out of oxygen and or water, food that he is not coming back to Earth. So many days/weeks he is going to slowly die in space. So then he takes a bunch of heroin he snuck aboard to calm his nerves.

@@jackisnthereipromise Here is what actually happened to one of Bowie's eyes:: In the spring of 1962, Bowie would walk into a confrontation that would change his life forever when his childhood friend, George Underwood, would be the reason why the future musician would end up having two completely different coloured eyes. Underwood, who went to school with Bowie, later revealed that the two had an argument over a girl which resulted in a playground fight. With both Underwood and Bowie liking the same girl, the two had a “short-lived falling out” which turned physical. The fight resulted in Bowie suffering a Heterochromia, a condition which resulted in the right eye turning blue in appearance while a left one remained a darker shade of brown, due to suffering “a deep corneal abrasion and paralysis of the iris muscle.”

Literally a lifelong fan (born in '68), I never had a life event or memory that wasn't framed by his music. This played on the local AM radio as I was with my mother taking me out to McDonald's when she picked me up on my first day of school. As a teen in the 80's I owned a pair of red shoes (because of "Lets Dance). As a mother in my 20's and 30's I introduced my children to him early on. In my 40's I kept Station to Station, Aladdin Sane and The Lodger in my music rotation...and he died the year before I turned 50. I still weep whenever I hear his songs these few years later. If you want to know what happened to Major Tom, he reveals the major's fate in Blackstar. He knew he was dying and he gave closure to that beloved character as a final gift to his fans.

"Space Oddity" was of a piece with much of what was going on in contemporary science fiction of the time (the "New Wave", begun -- more or less -- by Michael Moorcock's editorship of New Worlds beginning in the early 1960s). Colin Greenland, in his THE ENTROPY EXHIBITION draws attention to these parallels, particularly to Bowie's song, even quoting a part of it as the quintessence of one of the major themes in the literature at that time. This is especially apparent in the work of such figures as J. G. Ballard (perhaps the most finely distilled of this sort of work in his canon is the later MEMORIES OF THE SPACE AGE, though a great deal of his work dealt with this theme and its various implications), Barry Malzberg (whose novels, BEYOND APOLLO and THE FALLING ASTRONAUTS may be the quintessential handling of the topic), and even long-time science fiction writers such as Brian W. Aldiss, whose short story "Man in His Time" used, as was quite frequently the case with the New Wave, varied techniques, including fractured narrative structures, to carry the message even more powerfully than what was actually said. This was all part of a very strong ferment in the field, producing some of the best science fiction of the latter twentieth century; things which often seriously questioned the "norm" of Golden Age (1939-1959) science fiction, which quite often compared our exploration of space to pioneering efforts in America's westward expansion -- not always favorably, but often very much so (as in a fair amount of the work of Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke). Bowie was both influence on and influenced by this "Second Revolution" in the field, and an integral part of its development.

Colonel Chris Hadfield's rendition of Space Oddity was actually recorded on the MIR space station, those were not special effects. For a Canadian astronaut actually floating in space it wasn't bad. Natalie Merchant also has a very well done cover of Space Oddity.
