David Cay Johnston discusses his book, "It's Even Worse Than You Think" at Politics and Prose on 1/24/18.
Johnston, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, has been covering Trump since 1988. In June 2015, he was the first national journalist to write about a possible Trump presidency and in his 2016 bestselling The Making of Donald Trump he gave a comprehensive account of Trump’s business practices, associates, and family background. Now Johnston follows up that profile with a detailed analysis of the Trump administration’s first one hundred days. He shows how Trump’s policies are affecting ordinary people’s jobs, finances, and security, explains the federal agencies charged with carrying out Trump’s executive actions, and illuminates places where the system can hide what’s really going on.

I'm a retired U.S. Forest Service employee who worked during the Reagan and W. Bush administrations. Both administrations did a great deal behind the scenes, under the radar to undermine protection of the environment and to do favors for large corporations. Some of it illegal. Reagan broke the law in order to double the amount of timber cut on National Forest land, which just ten years later resulted in the spotted owl crisis. The Resources Planning Act of 1974 and the National Forest Management Act of 1976, as well as the largest public input process in federal government history set the timber harvest level coming from National Forests. He ignored all of them and handed a harvest level from above, that even the timber oriented portion of the agency's management stated was not sustainable. They were proven to be right, i.e. the spotted owl crisis. Reagan told the Forest Service that if they didn't double the harvest level he would fire everyone and get people in who would double the cut. He also had a program called the "Asset Management Plan." He was going to sell 1/3 of all National Forest land to reduce the federal debt. He knew the public reaction would be strong, swift and against him so he planned to do this secretly. Each Forest Service employee had to sign a letter in which they stated if they told the public about the plan they would be fired. The letter was kept in a safe and the supervisor of each unit hand carried it throughout the office to get each employees signature. As a result no employee could make a copy. I will not list some of my observations from the George W. Bush administration as this comment is long already. However, the chicanery was nearly as bad. Conservative administrations tend to destroy agencies and then when they can't get the job done as a result, they then hold these agencies up as examples of how the government can't do anything.

Nice anecdote. Here's mine: the Democratic Congress cut off aid to S Vietnam in its fight against Stalinist N Vietnam in 1974. The next year the South fell and hundreds of thousands were killed by the Stalinist swine.

HIs first statement is very powerful - Donald Trump is not the disease in our country, only the symptom. His phrase "political termites" for Trump's team is precise and alarming. We all need to work hard as citizens to save our democracy and protect our democratic ideals. They are beyond precious. We can do it fellow Americans.

@JosipRadnik1
@JosipRadnik1 6 жыл бұрын
I only got to min 12 before I had to switch off. yes, his opening statement had some profound thruth. Trump is not the disease, he's only the symptom. But as soon as this "pulizer prize winning investigative reporter" started bringing up all that russia collusion bullshit i had to stop the video. He might be right about almost everything he cirticizes about Trump's policies. I'm no fan of that man either. But at least - dear americans (as I am not one of yours I admit) - for once - learn to clean up your shit first and at least look at what YOU are doing before you start blaming others. The Russians aren't your problem, they aren't even the problem to us western europeans - but you Americans are a big problem to the world by now. You botched your elections yourself by letting the democratic candidacy be bought and rigged so the only choice you had was a rich, sociopathic, criminal liar with an orange face and clumsy behaviour on one side and a rich, sociopathic, criminal liar with a grey face and an eloquent fassade that - after 30 years of public exposure everyone (but this audience probably) was able to see through. You might say what you want about Trump (and you'll be probably right) but you have to realise that he isnt responsible for the mess you are in - he only exploits it without much concern for the consequences (as would have done the other "alternative"). but in this, he very much represents the western capitalist society he's leading in relation to the rest of the world. Sounds offensive to hear criticism from some foreigner? So let me be clearer then: YOUR AMERICAN EXEPTIONALIST BIGGOTRY is the name of the disease together with that fake liberalism that claims to be the pinnacle of liberty and freedom while it in fact has never done anything to defend it (all to the opposite) - and this whole russian collusion hoax is nothing but another symptom of just THAT. So if you want to get cured - clean up at your own camp first - maybe best when you start with holding that party accountable that has yet again misearbly failed to deliver the slightest thing to the people they claim to represent.

I'm sorry but at 9:00 when he lays out the claim about wanting a receipt for a bank that was ordered to pay a fine and being told that he needed to file a FOIA, that's been a staple of our government since we could request FOIA documents. Delay, delay, delay, redact, redact redact. FOIA is a joke and always has been, this isn't a "Trump" thing.

This has been a breath of fresh air for me. After hearing over and over again how America is now a divided country, I was waving the white flag and surrendering to the notion of America becoming a divided country. I started to believe that was the solution. Let's just tear up the Constitution and divid up into regions according to our values, our morals, our beliefs, and our priorities. No one said it had to last forever. It was signed when the population was four million people; the population is now 340 million people. How can we ever agree on anything? But after watching this video, I believe in these United States and the Constitution that formed it once again. I wonder if perhaps Mr Trump was not sent to us from a Higher Authority to test our resolve and depending on the outcome, come out an even stronger UNITED STATES. GOD SAVE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!!

I just got the book and can't wait to read it. And thank you David Cay Johnston for asking where all the ministers are. Of course, you posed this question in response to Trump's philandering with porn stars and such. I think the question ought to be posed in relation to the greater obscenity: tax plans and proposals that load yet more wealth upon the already obscenely rich while literally taking the lunches away from the poorest children, leaving elderly people with heating bills they cannot afford, and tossing vast riches at the weapons' contractors as if this world needs more war, weapons, or militarism. Yes. It certainly is a morally depraved kakistocracy.

The man speaking at time 32:26 has hit it right on the nail; one of the key aspects that I have observed, along with only a extremely small handful of others. The main aspect that could turn things around quickly. That aspect being the knowledge, information and rational thinking of about 30-50% of this electorate. Where I differ from his remarks is that it is more than just availability of fact and evidence to this portion of the electorate-- it is the root of their ability to discern and accept fact and evidence when clearly available and presented to them on a silver platter! They can be presented with clear, undeniable facts and evidence only to have them double-down on their stupidity. It's uncanny, tear-your-hair out frustrating. THIS is what is needed to be turned around, but I see no change back to acceptance of facts, reason, evidence for generations. We ARE in a world of hurt in this country.

Isaiah 46:10/Matthew6:10/ Eph.1:10,11 is the answer; the remedy of the future. This society will have ti learn lessons, and pass away into death. Later on after humanity anihilates itself, God will begin bringing neighbors back from their graves, back from death - John 5:28/ Daniel 12:2 they that sleep* in the dust of the earth shall awake.....like Lazarus did John 11:11-16 he was asleep/dead. In 1990, the Parliament of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty, which hid behind the words «Expressing the will of the people of Ukraine...» and spoke of a new state being established within the existing boundaries of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic based on the Ukrainian nation’s right to self-determination. But did the Ukrainian nation have the right to self-determination in Crimea if the number of Ukrainians on the peninsula made up only 25.8 percent of the population? The answer is obvious - no, it did not. This was the first step in the annexation of Crimea by the Ukrainian state, which, at that point, was the Ukrainian SSR separate from the Soviet Union. On 20 January 1991, the first Crimean referendum was held on the restoration of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic as a subject of the USSR and as a party to the Union Treaty. (Between 1921 and 1945, the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was part of the RSFSR.) With a high turnout of 81.37 percent, 93.26 percent of the Crimean population voted in favour of restoring autonomy. On 12 February 1991, the restoration of the Crimean ASSR was confirmed by law: the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR accepted the results of the referendum. The Crimean people were clearly self-determining, and this self-determination differed hugely from the self-determination of the Ukrainian nation. So what did the Ukrainian state do next? On 24 August 1991, the Supreme Court of the Ukrainian SSR, again on the basis of self-determination, declared the independence of Ukraine, arbitrarily identifying the Crimean ASSR as a territory of the newly established state. By doing so, the founders of Ukraine ignored a law requiring a separate referendum to be held in Crimea on the Crimean ASSR’s status within Ukraine. This was done deliberately, since Kiev knew perfectly well that the people of Crimea would never vote in favour of becoming part of Ukraine. At the same time, a huge scam to manipulate history was being prepared: on 1 December 1991, a referendum was held illegally in the Crimean ASSR that did not deal with the issue of Crimea’s status, but retroactively confirmed the Ukrainian Declaration of Independence in the autonomous republic. Moreover, anyone who had ever stepped foot on the peninsula was allowed to vote. This was to make it seem as if the Crimean people supported Ukrainian independence when, for the most part, they actually boycotted the referendum. In this underhand way, Ukraine took its second step towards the annexation of Crimea. In the US Declaration of Independence, it says that the Creator endowed people with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Just like Americans, Crimeans also want to live, be free and be happy. That is precisely why they spent decades trying to break away from the Ukrainian trident, something they finally managed in 2014 when they returned to Russia.

Mr. Johnson's Anti-Putin Stance is Pure BS. Otherwise pretty good. He just has to get over the Cold War Indoctrination that we all grew up with. Getting to know a Russian real well, sure cured me!

You got it! Your personal myopic experience of getting to know a Russian makes Putin a glorious leader and humanitarian.

11:20 "He is creating a government of the WORST PEOPLE" We already have a government of the worst people, pick any alphabet agency and look at the top power structure. Hell, look at the House and Senate. They're all bought and paid for. I get what this guy is doing, hes capitalizing on the Trump hysteria. He even sounds like one of those die hard Trump supporters that claims every move Trump makes is 4D chess, lmao. But instead of 4D positive chess its 4D nefarious chess.

It looks current. I looked the date on his book and it's this year. Like the Wolff book, it's on #45's first 100 days, and is now getting on the shelves.

I opine that Mr. Johnson is one of our best observers of the Trump Administration. To have him, Dr. Snyder, and Mr. Frum in the same room...

Granted he is a good observer but he failed to observe how when Donald Trump removed, Sua Sponte', the individual mandate and single-handedly canceled the ACA; the Dems and Repubs, knowing who butters their bread, overnight came to terms to keep the ACA going for two more years. This was a huge double cross, by both parties against the middle class.

Any where I see conservatives on line I always tell them to watch one of these videos where he is promoting this book, or to read Making of Donald Trump. I am afraid even if they did they would still support him. I also say liberals should read the book as well. I am pretty sure conservatives as well as liberals don't know just how bad Trump is.

and you need to get informed about crimea saying i disagree is the easy way out crimea had a referendum and choose to return to russia (reunite with russia) because up to 1954 they were part of russia so everybody over 60 was born russian and was attached to the Ukraine by Khrushchev without a referendum not like kosovo and all the other states that use to be yugoslavia that declared independence without referendum and where immediately recognized by the US. contrarianopinion.wordpress.com/2015/01/18/ukraine-no-country-for-no-man/ Ukraine is a state that has been established for a first time in 1992-1993 as a result of disorderly collapse of Soviet Union of Socialistic Republics (USSR). One of republics of USSR was Soviet Socialistic Republic of Ukraine (SSRU) which borders changed several times since its establishment in 1920-ties, including annexation of Crimea from Russia in 1954 under the unilateral decree from Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. (Oh, and legally Crimea was never actually made part of the Ukraine because Nikita Khrushchev botched the paperwork when handing it over.) www.informationclearinghouse.info/article42280.htm On 19 February 1954 the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union issued a decree transferring the Crimean Oblast from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic to the Ukrainian SSR. According to the Soviet Consti/tution (article 18), the borders of a republic within the Soviet Union could not be re-drawn without the agreement of the republic in question. The transfer was approved by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union; however, according to article 33 of the const/itution, the Presidium did not have the authority to do so. The const/itutional change (articles 22 and 23) to accommodate the transfer was made several days after the decree issued by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet.[1][2] The question should have been submitted to the open discussion of the Supreme Council of the Russian SSR. Moreover, a referendum should have been conducted to find out the opinion of the residents of the two republics. Nothing of that happened. The Presidium of the Supreme Council gathered for a session on February 19, 1954 - only 13 of 27 members were present. There was no quorum, but the decision was adopted unanimously. if somebody stole ANNEXED Crimira it was the leaders of the Ukraine
