David has an exceptional practical vision. Totally applicable here in South Africa. It is just such a pity folks here are not as sensible as Australians. Thank you Morag.

Thank you Morag and David. RetroSuburbia is a wonderful book. Thank you for your work compiling it David. Its a fairly encyclopaedic edition. The "Redesigning the suburbs/ Aussie Street" presentations by David over the years can be found on KZbin. Those presentations built up great hopes and expectations for this book (which I eagerly pre-ordered) and it has certainly delivered. Thanks again, From Aussie St. :)

As a rural Aussie living in a fast growing town, your words around community connection really resonate with me. After Moving back full time to my little piece of heaven 2 years ago, I have found amazing opportunities to connect to both my community and my land via our local food swap group. This years summer garden is almost wholey planted by gathering seeds throughout the year at swap, collecting seedlings from my composted beds and at our monthly food swap, as well as exploring friends gardens. I am so lucky :)

"Until we have in our minds an image of what we're working towards, we don't really know which direction we're going. Imagine the future. Imagine the future that we want. Imagine a positive future, where we are connected."

It was a very nice touch to hear children and young people laughing and playing in the background just out of camera shot. Positivity attracts positivity. In our particular suburb of Perth there are a lot of high fences and security cameras on garage doors. Police sirens wail throughout the day. I think a lot of people live in fear. How do we combat the criminal element that drives that fear ? Building resilience through stronger community, I guess... I look forward to the day when our kids can play freely in the streets like we did back in the 70's without the worrying parents tracking them on the find-my-kid app.

Great interview, thanks! I've seen a couple of David's interviews and presentations about this. It is the next logical step - we need to start tearing down those fences, real and metaphorical, which are keeping us isolated from one another. It also makes permaculture more inclusive, as we nearly all have a tiny space to grow in and most of us won't have any foreseeable opportunity to live on an acre or two, or in a community or Eco-village. Keep the inspiration coming!

i think there is a definite potential market for landscapers and builders that wish to retrofit suburban homes

Not all neighbours are going to love this lifestyle, unfortunately. My new neighbours ripped out all trees and the school fencing along our common border, put up colorbond, criticised plants that were on my side of the border and complained to council about my poultry. I just assumed they would accept and like these things, so sensitivity is required with the sharing of this lifestyle.

Hello Ruth, I am sorry to hear this, and yes of course, every situation is different. Sometimes it might be neighbours further up the street or around the corner that become our eco-living friends. Best wishes, Morag

Is the book aimed towards only your climate or is it more of a general guide for everyone in the world?
@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife6 жыл бұрын
The ideas, design solutions and strategies have relevance generally, but David has written Retrosuburbia particularly in reference to Victoria, Australia because, as he says in the intro " I can draw more strongly on direct experience and knowledge, and provide a coherent pattern language that is cued to climate, landscape and culture".
