I would take a guess and say rebecca shot Adam. The reason I think so is that in the frame where she is shown to be dead her Head surely seems to be damaged, but you can see Metal in the hole. The big lump above her head is too big to be brain and the structure also doesnt fit, it looks more like intestines. Her left arm is also undamaged and the Hand is out of view. Due to the fact that we dont know about the exact specs of the massive arm it would also be possible that she has a similar upgrade to Davids grenade launcher within his arm. The most convincing to me is, that if you show a splash of blood on the screen why not the damage. It suerly is artistic and maybe made in order to bewares us from seeing Davids face blowing up but it could also be a artistic element to show us something we cant see directly within the current scene. We look through Adams Eyes/Perspective from which we would not be able to see damage done to him, so for that the Blood splash would be the perfect indicator for him taking a hit without it beeing shown. Against all this theory is offcourse lucy and the scene at the end, but if your idea of him surviving is right, as arasaka if I would like to test a absolute uncontrolable weapon with its own mind, the right place would be on the moon. So maybe if there will ever be a second Season Lucy could in theory find adam through some weird plot within the arasaka network on the moon. Resulting in a new inreresting setting that holds many possible scenes for the great gore we saw.

the series has a completely unambiguous ending, there simply cannot be an alternative ending, and most importantly, it is very concise. But I really want to believe that everything is not so and David is alive. although in fact, in order for the ending to be different, he had to give up banditry in the 1st series (but he would not have met Lucy) or in the 5th face off and not let go of Lucy (then they would have had a chance to survive together).

Another thing about there being no happy endings in night city - taking into account you went over with Arasaka’s (possible) interests in keeping David alive, chances are he’s have a fate worse than death... definitely no happy ending being taken alive if they find use in you.

That is my take on him, he was grateful for them saving him so he stayed and upgraded himself with their product and when Arasaka found out what a perfect guinea pig he is (and not to mention a crazy bodyguard) they made sure to keep him for eternity (wouldn't be surprised if he also got a construct of himself so he couldn't kill himself).

@@geminireviews that's a gross way to reason his feelings towards her, he was racing towards the end of his own road much like Maine did, all the while juggling between his feelings for her, the urge to protect his crew, his survivors guilt from the deaths he's witnessed, all this paired with PTSD from murdering that innocent woman while at the cusp of cyberpsychosis and questioning his own place in the world, whether or not he's special or just another doomed Night City thug. You can't boil all those thoughts and emotions roiling around in David's head into just "he didn't care about Lucy", when the thought of her was the only thing he was clinging onto even after going completely over the edge. Rewatch the series.

There was also a drink named after Johnny although he still technically exists. You have to remember Saburo loved talking to the dead. Why wouldn't he make an engram of David? That being said what's to stop Arasaka from using David as a construct like smasher. I know everyone keeps saying Smasher gave him pitty and ended him but Smasher also told Johnny that he was going to kill him yet we see Johnny get put through soulkiller after. Smasher has very limited freedom of choice. He is a lapdog of Arasaka and couldn't make any decisions for himself at the end of the day if Arasaka decides differently.

I went into this show, expecting so much, from all the hype. And I wanted to cry. Its been a long time since I've cried to an anime. but other than the animation and draw of the show and music being amazing. I felt the character growth was not there. It fealt rushed, episode by episode it fealt like there was no growth, no continuation. Fealt like I was being forced to like them, but what for? I didn't really care for David, he didn't really show much growth with the other main characters. Idk, for me I needed more character growth for the ending to hit. I liked the way the anime went and how the story was perceived, and it did its main job, which was to get people to buy the game. but hey thats just my opinion.

I think an easy way to preserve the ending while being able to bring David back would be for someone to find out Arasaka made an engram out of him, like they did to Johny. If it was Lucy then we could have a second tragedy of her trying to bring him back to the material world or maybe she abandons her humanity to stay with him in the net. Honestly though, sometimes a definitive ending nails the greatness of the story, and the motto of Night City is that "legends aren't made by how they live, but how they die," and I think this ending drives that home really well. I'd prefer if he stayed dead, but I sure wish he wasn't, and Rebecca.

My personal theory is that season 2 will begin with Lucy doing a similar heist to V, with her slotting in a relic with David's engram on it. Then, the rest of the season will follow Lucy going up against arasaka with David living in her head. Which would start wholesome, then become tragic as they realize that they can still never truly be together, just talk to eachother. Then finally, for some story reason, she has to sacrifice his engram and he gives one final goodbye that allows her to move on.

Throughout the whole show, all David has shown was a desire to help his friends and family, from offering to drop out of school to help his mother with bills all the way to sacrificing the last of his sanity just to protect the last of the edgerunner group. I think that's why he's such a likable character for everyone who's watched Edgerunners. Even though I'd love to see a happy ending more than anything, I'm not sure how they would bring him back for season 2.

As much as I know (Experience from the Game) Adam has no respect for his enemies. Even if you come alone as V in the Reaper path, he proceeds to complain and mock your humanity, for letting (given you decided to) Oda live, and not bringing Rough. I could see that but in the show it was majorly stated that when you go to the moon, there's no coming back (referencing that it's a one way trip). I don't think the neural links in the show can extend very far, the only large feat we've seen with them is when Adam Smasher ripped out Lucy trying to EMP him via neural link. However, I can totally see Falco coming back to drive for the new team or him becoming a fixer with no ulterior motives which would link him with Maine and David's ideologies of doing just with the shake and keeping fair play amongst the crowd

In regards to david having some special ability to comeback from cyberpsychosis, its confirmed in game that people are able to comeback form cyberpsychosis like other mental illnesses but the risk that person poses to others plus the cost for therapy is high so it rarely if ever happens. In game you do meet a rehibiliated cyberpsycho who works for max tac. It kinda adds to how depressing the world and some of the story characters go through since it can be prevented or treated but most if not all aren't in a position to do so

I've thought about one theory where they make clones of David to use in the cyber skeleton, but his mind is wiped and his only purpose is being a soldier for Maxtac or something. But the thing is the David clones can only handle the skeleton for so long before they have to execute the clone. Arasaka can't figure out why the David clones are unable to handle the skeleton like the original, but they start suspecting that his memories played a part and use simulations with his mom and Lucy to find out that's how David is able to avoid cyberpsychosis. They fool a David clone into thinking that every mission is to save Lucy or his mom, then they wipe his mind so they can keep re-using the same David clone over and over again, as cloning cost too much.

That's too convoluted of a plot even for Arasaka to pull off. Arasaka has several cyber skeletons/ power armor suits in their arsenal that they simply rarely test because they rarely have a reason to use them. There really is no need for David considering Smasher smashed up the suit made for him and it would be too expensive to keep building new ones.

Cyberpsychosis is a result of the imperfect software of the cybernetics interacting with the human mind. There is no resistance. Cyberpsychosis is just the faults in the software amplifying *already existing* mental problems. David was 'resistant' to start with because he was pretty apathetic and didn't care about anything. But after he became an edgerunner he began to not only care about and enjoy his life, he also began to become very egotistical and this is is what got amped up into cyberpsychosis. Hence why he starts declaring how 'he is special' more and more as the series goes on. Basically he drank his own kool-aid and that's what got him. All this to say that cloning someones body but leaving their mind blank would not improve their chances of withstanding the hardware, if anything it would make them worse. And before people ask, the corpo's keep the imperfections of their hardware covered up which is why everyone, except Adam Smasher, believes cyberpsychosis is a direct result of having bigger and more cyberware. Unlike the books, the anime is from the characters perspective so they will only talk about the propaganda they've been told thus this info doesn't really come across that well.

As Mike Pondsmith puts it , "You have to have an inherent susceptibility, which (in the TRPG) is represented by the player's Humanity Stat" which is marked by "the subject's ability to emphasize and relate with others, their ability to absorb and rebound from mental and physical stressors, their ability to show compassion and flexibility to others, and whether they are able to balance their worldview through other methods." Pondsmith also notes that due to his humanity, David "could definitely handle the stress of added cyberware up to a point" which explains why he was so special to Arasaka in the first place. So what wound up happening to David is simply that the stress of the hardware wound up surpassing the buffers of his own humanity which explains why Lucy was able to pull him out of his psychosis albeit temporarily.

If you knew anything about Arasaka, any survivors are forcibly 'studied' and interrogated. This means the possibility of turning them into a engram like Johnny Silverhand, or a imperfect one if they recently 'died' but the body didn't decompose yet (and humans in CP2077 world are mostly modified with processors and whatnot, it's possible to retain data of their personalities and memories on death). For a game that supposedly have the lore of Rogue AI and malware and such, those concepts are barely looked into.

Good points. They should add an expansion with Regina Jones connecting to David. It was never really made clear how Regina is curing cyberpsychosis in the game so they can connect David to her, making him a basis for the cure. They can make it as though she's trying to find out how he was able to teeter at the edge of cyberpsychosis and eventually get back to humanity.

Cyberpsycosis is treatable through therapy. Though you never completely get rid of it like a really bad drug addiction, there's always a chance you'll slip up. However it's treatable depending on how far the person is gone and if the authorities can subdue the victim. When a person is treated they most usually can live a normal life again while being on a government watch list for future slip ups.

I so desperately want David and Lucy to have a happy life together, but if he was spared at the last minute I think it would retroactively ruin most of the preceding shows artistic choices. All that setup and clear planting of a tragic end would now be in service of an ending that clashes in a massive way. David is gone gone. It's a theory but Adam Smahser makes the remark of David being an interesting construct, David declines and Adam gives him mercy. This is because Adam is a construct, a slave of Arasaka. I'd like to think he would live on but he would inevitably be stuck with Arasaka, and any other version of David are just copies. Although it is pretty frustrating since Adam Smasher in the game is weak compared to himself in the anime, I mean the mc can kill him with just guns, including rebecca's shotgun. So how David possible not win? Plot armor is what I think it is since he already lives on in the game...Kinda sad the whole final attack is covered up and doesn't make it into the game as cyberpunk legend.

@@marubeef3052 well how about this. The adam smasher you fought in the game is just one of many. And he planned to be killed off. There's a theory about it and there even evidence to back it up. There's one scene in the game where you were listening to adam smasher and you're hiding he actually knows that you're there. There's a mod called threat detector that highlights enemies red if they detected you. And in that scene if you use the mod adam smasher glows red meaning he knows you are there. My theory he faked his own death. Like the saying goes you win the game by not playing it. And he's just another guy who wants to escape just like lucy and countless others. We can even tie the game and the show in a sequel about v helping lucy get back david's brain. Then we fight a construct version of david.

now that you mention it i could totally see them pulling a Tokyo Ghoul RE. we'd start off with a character who is a new one on the surface. he'd be working for Arasaka and tasked with taking out cyberpunks. but as the story progresses and as he visits familiar places such as the place, they'd hangout after jobs, he'd get glitches in his program, memories, similar to the memories v gets that belong to johnny. eventually wed figure out that it's not as simple as this character had gotten code of David's memories, but that he is David. David l would once again have an opportunity to take down Arasaka from the inside, but like a warriors journey the final scenes of the season would be him going to the moon, and it cutting to lucy turning around to see him there thinking it was another glitch or memory, but he then reaches out to grab her hand. then whispers, "I made a Promise." roll credits. also, would like to see him go back to an almost natural body, not as bulky. cause I just see David as a scrawnier guy with a lot of heart. I don't feel he was true to himself by taking on everyone Elses dreams and not having his own.

David got the happy ending that people in Night city can get. He fullfilled his dream of saving the one he loves, succeded in getting to top of arasaka tower for his mom and got Lucy to the moon. Being subjected to becoming an engram or dragged of for experiments is a way worse fate then going out the legend who won against the city. So even if we got David back, he'd not be the same person anymore. Side note Adam Smashers sheer pressence and might is what General Grevious should've been in Star wars.

My theory is actually based on adam smasher saying: you'd make a good construct. A construct is what we've seen in the game which is a copy of someones mind/conscious on a relic. It might be possible to bring back david as such a construct and make a season 2 about lucy, who also happens to be one of the best netrunners trying to get her hands onto that construct to bring David back to live in a new body. They could focus on the philosophical aspect of if David would be human or not like the game soma did and figure out an amazing plot on these topics.

Part of me almost wants it to be set in 2077 if nothing else so that V could either be in that crew or to make a cameo to return Gloria's jacket to either Lucy or David.

A sequel arc where Lucy finds out that David is alive and being experimented on by Arasaka would make a lot of sense. The entire point of the final conflict was that Arasaka knew David was special and wanted to test advanced cyberwear on him; it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume Arasaka ordered Smasher to keep him alive. No, that wouldn't be a happy ending either, but pretty much every story told in the Cyberpunk universe is endlessly tragic... Maybe a story about Lucy rescuing David, and David using minimalistic cyberwear isn't impossible, the two of them joining a nomad tribe and escaping the city. Maybe I'm just high on copium.

I don't know man, i've seen many people wishing they stopped watching after episode 4-5. I kinda feel like that, it's a really good anime sure, it's a fun ride and it brings your feelings out, but at the end it lefts you feeling just hopelessness and void. I was really enjoying myself until episode 5, after that i just started to get really mad, to the point of not even enjoying the episodes that much. I didn't want to pay attention and get more attached to the characters because the ending was obvious, but i kept watching because i still had a little bit of hope. I just wish David and Lucy survived, even if everyone else dies and the city is still hell, at least they get to go to the moon together, still sad but not just pure depression. Even killing everyone including Lucy is less depressive than leaving her alone with those memories 😓 Some people say that it wouldn't make sense for David to fight and escape Smasher, but for me the beauty about anime and fantasy is that the impossible can happen, you can fight and win against all odds. I think the series were already really really good in the first 4 episodes, that ending was too much imo and i think it would've been just as succesful if David and Lucy survived. @@Windsouls I understand how you feel. We are used to "happy" endings many times, and these types of endings are shocking to us because they are more similar to the reality of everyday life. It left me with a really strong feeling of emptiness haha. When someone dies, those who truly suffer are those who remain alive to remember those who are no longer there. The happy ending would be satisfying for many, but that way it would have been just another story. I think that feeling of sadness is what makes stories become great stories to remember. An example outside the anime is for example the Sons of Anarchy, at times it reminded me a lot of that series. Sorry for my bad english.

They wanted to make clear that there's no hope in that city, you're sentenced and there's no escape. But they still could have done something like Lucy and David dying together and somehow Falco or someone save their consciousness and they are send to the Moon simulation, so the city still ''kills'' them but they aren't really dead and they get to be together, something like that. But yeah they didn't do that... as i said it is what it is😅 And yes! i hope they make a 2nd season, but this time in know there's no happy ending in Cyberpunk so it won't catch me offguard... hopefully haha.

She became an engram and went beyond the blackwall. - Rache Bartmoss thought he was special too, he was the one to bring down the netkrash. He bit the dust too (although some believe his consciousness is inside the net). - Johnny Silverhand wanted to get revenge on Arasaka, thought he was their doom. He even nuked the damn tower. V and Jackie are just two more names on the long list of people who thought they were special. Thought they could 'beat the system and become rich'. Turns out, the whole system is rigged from the start. You can't win against corporatism. Hell even the whole lore of the Corpo wars, and the south American wars before that is filled with things that scream "you'll die under the machine". Also the TTRPG is brutal. Doesn't matter how good or how strong you are. A bullet is a bullet and it will end you anyways (hint to V receiving a bullet to the head by Dexter DeShawn, and later himself getting shot by Takemura. Just another casualty of the city's greed). I do agree with the idea of an "anthologies" seasons. Different people, different stories, all messed up in their own way. But Trigger most likely won't go back to this one...

David’s file never reached V’s desk but he definitely knew of him. I wonder what dialogue the streetkid and nomad lifepaths have for it…

I very much think he’ll be around just not as himself. They’ll keep him alive as more of a cyborg being and Lucy’s netrunning skills (which were barely used in this season) will be put to use once she gets a heads up about there being a possibility that David is still alive being used by Arasaka. That’s my theory and hope it happens as a full season 2!

I think as good as Lucy was as a netrunner, i think Lucy wouldnt be able to get to Mikoshi to free David. I mean Alt herself failed considering she states, that she tried multiple times to take over and failed and when V did with Johnny himself or a crew by choice he had a capable crew with top tier assistants to conjoin. Lorewise Lucy shouldn't be a top tier netrunner considering, she needs to cool her implants. I#ve read somewhere that it is stated that the best netrunners (like Bartmoss or Spidermurphy) dont need any cooling systems for their implants. The only chance her saving David could be if she met V at some point in the future and V has cured and tells her issue and V reffers to Mr. Blue eyes, a alien AI, who propably has the skillset and possibilities to infact infiltrate Mikoshi with ease... But ofcourse this is just an idea based on a theory to the lore of the game :D

I like to think David got turned into something like Johnny silver Silverhand, but an improved biochip. There's hints in the game that V also lives (depending on ending) so maybe crossover :) or cameo in the anime/game dlc

Honestly I have been thinking the same things too! That we never truly see him die, and usually when shows/movies do this it’s either left to interpretation orrrrr they are trying to trick the viewer into believing the character is gone! After hearing this I am feeling a little more confident in my belief (and hope) that David isn’t truly gone, it also wouldn’t make sense from Arasaka either, I’m just excited to hear for a season 2, I’m hoping there is, maybe David is alive, Lucy somehow sees him (maybe he’s like a mindless drone) except when he sees Lucy and she tries to save her man) idk but I just want a season 2, it was a phenomenal show, top 2 anime for me

Note that the game itself tells you Cyberpsychosys COULD be treatable or even reversible. And the Psycho Killer quest line promotes this by encouraging the player to not kill the psychos, granted I am missing one more to fulfill this quest and Haven't gotten to the results of it yet, but the idea is there. You are also told by Falco himself in the game's Edgerunner mission that the survivors in the crew have moved on with their lives and are laying low, so I think it's out of the question to expect him or Lucy to appear, but Maybe in the upcoming DLC we could get some sort of confirmation to this with arasaka using David to intersect V at some point in the story, or having a Bonus Cyber Psycho Easter egg mission where David could break out of whatever confinement he is in. (given he is still alive) and has now gone entirely off the deep end of Cyber Psychosis,

I think with everything we know about Smasher it would be a waist for them not to make David into Smasher's "replacement" in the DLC as Smasher is dead. That is if the DLC more to the end and doesn't add more to the middle like CDPR likes to do.

I feel like there are so many routes this can go. 1. David is alive: this could maybe show new characters but Lucy’s journey to reunite each other and face night city together. 2. He’s dead: if there’s a season two with David dead. The story would be awful. Lucy alone can’t really do much or bring entertainment. So Netflix would have to add new characters around Lucy. Which no one may like My Opinion: The ending was sad and amazing. I think for the sake of what we love. There shouldn’t be a season two it’s for the better and to have a meaning to the story

If the writers have the passion that they had in The first season i am all for it. If studio trigger thinks that the story ended how it ended then thats how it ended for me too. I love this show so much and even though i am kinda poor i would pay so much money so i can get that fucking Dopamine hit of this show, it really hits hard on you, all of you, and I am happy to say as a Film Lover that have watched Films all of my life, i can happily say that this show was a Mastapiece. And for the people that will maybe ask if its better than Arcane, i wouldnt compare them even though they are in the same category as animation i see them as standalone shows that are both wonderful and a joy to watch. But if i had to say which is better...... Cyberpunk Edgerunners no doubt.

I think 2 things 1. If David is dead which sucks but it fits the theme of no one in night city wins they only make a legacy for themselves for example David, Johnny, and V, and Jackie🐐 and they should definitely make a season 2 with new characters but fits the same cycle I’d also like it to take place after V so we can see the impact he created if any 2. Say they keep David alive I think it should be a redemption kinda thing where he has to crawl his way from nothing to something again kinda like Marcus in Detroit become human and dedicate that season to him finding Lucy and introducing new characters who come and go and some stay hopefully That’s just my opinion thi

The thing is that even if it were possible, Smasher would’ve said no out of respect. Arasaka would technically still need David to sign a contract but I very much doubt that even someone like Smasher would allow it at this point, and the last thing after this disaster that Arasaka could ever want is Smasher going rogue on them because they refused his wishes. Unfortunately David was mercy killed by Smasher.

Smasher couldn't go against Araska if he wanted to. He is their lapdog. Smasher also told Johnny he was going to kill him and yet we seen Johnny get put through soulkiller. If Arasaka makes a decision Smasher can not disobey it.

@@gsegarra21 same way as Jackie except Arasaka tech magic was in play. However Smasher did shot Johnny in the back, and then mortally shoot him again. This particular plot hole really didn’t make any sense to be honest but I didn’t write the story. I will have to guess Johnny was killed and then Arasaka magically revived him using a biochip just to interrogate him. Keep in mind soul killer and the biochip was still in development and I’m going to assume this was when version 2 of the biochip was being tested.

We atleast know from the game, that Davids Gang isnt operating anymore in 2077. There is a quest where you can get his jacket and also where Falco is telling us, that they dont want to get involved in anything anymore

For season 2, have season 1 ending be a sim from when she finds out arasakas plan for David. This would explain why she changes so drastically, she has been running Sims to see if she can find a way to save him. Do a montage of a ton of Sims with differing events, and snap out of it suddenly with Lucy saying she knows how to save him. She already has some bs plot powers that are unexplained, so this much is believable. Then run the end of the season with her finishing prep to enact her master plan. Season 3 set up perfectly, and the tension is building since she says she can do it, but all we have seen is countless failures.

So basically my main character will be taking David's place in the anime The story begins 20 years ago in Oklahoma when the character was born here was adopted under a loving Christian family but he was autistic so his life was hard and especially the fact that his family were at first for awhile lived on the bad side of Tulsa because his family were struggling with money were the boy was 6 years old his dad tried to teach him how to do a pushup but the boy didn't understand how to do it since he was was very young and autistic 4 years later the family manage to move out of Tulsa and moved into Bixby and the dad took the boy to a gym to try to teach him how to get in shape but again the boy didn't understand 2 years later everything changed for the boy because his father died in a car crash a week later after his funeral the boy decides to workout as a last wish for his dad and so the boy started training and he was overcoming his autism because of it but still struggle with it but he would not break his promise no matter how hard it was so he pushed himself into doing wrestling by the time he was 13 even though he had more losses than wins He stuck with it till he graduated high school and by then the weak autistic boy was dead and a VERY stubborn (in a good way.) Man was born 2 years later when the young man turned 20 he wanted to check out the city in cyberpunk edgerunners (I don't know the name of it forgive me.) And when he got there he was disgusted with it because 1.all the men are weak and watch porn all the time 2.they don't want to do the hard to get stronger naturally and so that give up their humanity for more powerful and become a monstrosity 3.so crime rates are very high and not even the police can do anything 4.the police are corrupt And so the man wanted to destroy the source behind it all and a few days later he figured out what it the company was ( it was the company in the anime/ game again I don't know what it's called please forgive me.) And so the man ask the people in the city for more information about the company and then he figured out who Adam smasher is (please forgive me if I got his name wrong.) And realize how strong he is the man knew it would be nearly impossible to beat him but he wants a challenge but he won't be stupid about it he strategize his diet and a training routine for his fight against him some of the people offered him the upgrades and Chips for more power but he refused because 1.he didn't want to lose his humanity 2.it the lazy and a cowards way And so the young man being his training then it's basically a rocky training montage but with the workouts the young man planned and then 1 year later the young man completely his training and also managed to buy a nuke as a last ditch effort just in case he lost so then the young man walked to the entrance of the building went to the receptionist and said sarcastically "I'm here to make an appointment with the Adam smasher." And the receptionist was shocked because the public barley Knows who he is but the young man got frustrated and started to destroy the building so that he can get the smashers attention at first the guards attack him but the young man easily overpower them then later on the fighting got worse to the point where they had no choice but to bring in the smasher and so they did and the young man and Adam confront each other and Adam said "who the f*** are you?" The young man said nothing and stated fighting right away but it the fight wasn't going well for him let's just say at first the fight was like prime Mike Tyson vs a nerdy kid and it lasted for nearly a day but then Adam was finally losing power and getting tired and the young man was VERY injured but thanks to his endurance and stubborn natural the young man and Adam were at a stand still the were using everything they got left to kill each other and then Adam got the advantage over the young man and was beating him but then just before Adam did the finishing blow the young man had a flashback on his dad's grave and remembered the promise he made them back to reality he stop Adam's finishing punche and the the man's body was steaming from the anger and the intense adrenaline rush his mouth, nose,ears and eyes were bleeding with all the blood pumping intensity and just beating the living sh** out of Adam and his final punch hit Adam so hard he put a hole through him and Adam died the young man still had some of adrenaline left and killed everyone else in the Building to make sure there were no witnesses and decided to sell the nuke to buy a bomb to just destroy the company's building and so he did 1 week later he went back to Oklahoma but everyone will never forget the one man with no upgrades annihilated one of the biggest companies in the world and so they called him the CYBERSLAYER. THE END.
