He saved the girl he loves, and she saved him from Cyberpsychosis long enough that he could die human, with a smile on his face, and knowing she'd be safe. There was no way he would've lasted much longer even with Lucy's intervention, and he would've only ended up hurting those around him. Instead he died a legend.

If smasher would want David as a construct then he wouldn't aim for head. We see what happens when V gets shot in the head in the game. Plus, David being a construct would serve Arasaka in no way. They were only interested in his high tolerance for military grade tech. Outside of his high tolerance, his construct would serve no purpose. He's still just a teenager lmfao. Smasher saying he'd be an "interesting" construct would be for pure entertainment purposes because again, David is a hot head teenager that's ready to flatline whoever is in his way. He would be nothing but an entertaining sub conscious. Now lets say smasher did let him live. David had no time left before the cyberpsychosis was going to take over fully, and after smasher beat the ever living hell out of him he would need more implants than he had before to be functioning and alive which would worsen the condition even further. He would literally need those injections from the military tech non stop. There's literally no way around David dying

In my opinion, the optimal approach for the major production companies behind this show to maximize their profits, without jeopardizing the integrity of the first season (because, let's face it, many shows have suffered due to corporate greed and ill-conceived sequels), is to create an anthology series featuring an entirely different cast and crew. Ideally, they should strive to maintain the exceptional character development that we witnessed in the initial season. Perhaps they could include a cameo appearance from Falco, a character well-suited for such a role, given his relatively limited presence in the first season. This cameo could serve as a smooth transition to reintroduce Lucy in the second season, albeit with minimal screen time, ensuring it creates the impression of a cameo, without overshadowing the season's cliffhanger. Towards the season's conclusion, they would introduce David Smasher, leaving us with cliffhanger for season three. Lucy's brief reintroduction as a cameo, despite her substantial role later on, is to prevent us from prematurely deducing the finale, i.e. David's return, if she were to have an extended amount of screen time.

i love the ending in the end arasaka... doesnt lose much. Adam Smasher took care of it. David's intimate, personal goals of making sure Lucy goes to the moon, "getting to the top of Arasaka" for his mom, and dying a legend for Maine are all achieved. He loves them, and to have done them right is exactly what he wanted. Maybe he made a dent, but overall, corpos gonna corpo like they always do. He didn't end it all, he didn't change the world like the usual anime MC does. It reflects the bitter cynicism underlying life in the future. Yet in achieving his personal, intimate goals, he dies happy. That's something no one else could achieve, because it would meaning nothing to anyone except him. There are so many interesting stories they could tell. Like Johnny Silverhands time in the Army, how he became to despise the corpo world so much to the point to blow a nuke in night city, Or some story revolving around other fixers - the story of the war between the woodoo boys and Dex. I think Smasher intentionally shot David in the head to ensure he wouldn't become like Smasher. It's was completely altruistic as Smasher didn't want competition being the top attack dog in Ariasaka, but he was also honoring David's last wish in a way. Smasher knew David was on the brink of cyberpsycosis and didn't want to go out that way, so Smasher made sure David went out human with a bang. People seem to overlook that Smasher actually respected David for what he did to rescue Lucy if you manage to hear the, dialouge through the fighting. Smasher is a cold blooded killing psychopath, but if you manage to earn his respect fighting him and you're about to die, he'll make sure you die in a manner to where Ariasaka can't desecrate your corpse. Silverhand was the exception because Smacher couldn't kill Johnny due to the attack from Shaitan.
@christianpeterson5882 жыл бұрын
That doesn't make sense for smasher. He wouldn't have given a crap about what David wanted or honoring his wishes. Smasher is notorious for thinking humanities future is in full borg conversions and only thinks as non borg's as meet. He's also someone who tries to kill as many innocent people as possible on every mission. He could care less about what David wants. When he says oh well and shoots David I think he didn't care either way and he'd had probably shot him no matter what his answer was unless Arisaka instructed otherwise. Smasher didn't find a kindred soul in David and want to respect his wishes that wouldn't make any sense for his character. I also think even if David lived CD projekt made it pretty clear this wont be getting a sequel. They said they may make other anime's in the Cyberpunk universe but this story is finished. Which in my opinion is a good things. This story doesn't need to continue.

@@Khobai Hmmm... I think it's more because it fits the story. TBH, as said, in a world like this Arasaka would have kept David and force him to horrible experiments. @lordolxinator Жыл бұрын
If it were any other character, I'd be inclined to agree. But Smasher routinely says throughout his extensive life (nearing 100 years at this point) that he thrives on pain and death. His contract with Arasaka is even conditional that collateral damage is guaranteed. He has a shred of respect for interesting/powerful targets like David, Silverhand, V, or Blackhand. But it's as far as he goes, he finds too much enjoyment in testing his strength and obliterating the enemy. It's why he took great satisfaction in curb-stomping Rebecca and Saul, and why he became distracted fighting David because two potential targets to "massacre" (Lucy and Falco) were fleeing the fight. That's not to say he's completely off the rails. His contract to Arasaka clearly rivals his bloodlust, given all the toys and experimental tech they provide him with. For Arasaka, he gives up the chance at OHKO'ing David atop Saka Tower with his Sande, instead blowing the element of surprise to save Douglas (the Saka employee the others threw under the bus confronting Faraday). It should be mentioned that Smasher *supposedly* detects V and Jackie within Yorinobu's penthouse (due to a threat detection feature), but lets things play out instead of apprehending/killing them before leaving the room. The theory for this one goes that Smasher is playing Arasaka, detecting the thieves in the room, but allowing them to make an escape so that he can engage them out in public. More of a chase, more collateral damage, and perhaps the thieves will lead him to more enemies (hostile or just of Saka) to obliterate. This would gain Saka's favour and gratitude in recovering an almost lost and irreplaceable Relic (as opposed to just outing them in the penthouse as would be his job), and give him more bargaining power for experimental cyberware (or the green-light for more controversial targets). Either way, in line with the video, this does give Smasher a good motive for faking David's death. He's already had his fun with him, and David is literally defenceless at this point. Giving David up to Saka would not only get him in their best books, but potentially allow for David's crew to attempt a daring heist/battle (for Smasher to let loose and tear up the place) *or* potentially a rival if David were to go rogue/escape with some top-line augments. Smasher has been pretty sour that both Silverhand and Blackhand both kicked the bucket/disappeared so early into his bloodlust, so having David become as much of (if not more of) a threat than them would be appealing to him. The confrontation with V is evidence of this too, as he straddles the line between aggressive death threats in combat, and actually enjoying the fight to the death (only really showing displeasure at Rogue not being present in some endings, and V confusing him with Silverhand's "survival" as Smasher is seconds away from execution. While I still think thematically they intended David to die in that moment (especially with all the death flags etc), I maintain that it's also plausible that it's a fake-out left vague for a number of reasons. Perhaps to let fans speculate and discuss it for years. Maybe to keep it open if they wanted to continue the story, or poignantly implied that he was executed if not.

On the other hand, I for one would absolutely love an unplanned 2nd season where Lucy finds out David isn't dead, rather just imprisoned by Arasaka and used as a test subject, and the story is her putting together a team to save him. Trigger left some good plot hooks to work with (such as continued interest in the Old Net, the Cyberskeleton project likely still being on the table, and the mysterious corpo heir in the car), odd circumstances (like Lucy and Falco managing to escape at all, let alone Lucy getting to the moon, or why Falco has David's jacket and not her), and at least two major characters that might have cheated death, as well as a way to bring a third back (sort of). If they did do a season 2 with David somehow still being alive it should either have a VERY depressing story with an happy ending or an sad ending like before. Sorry to ruin your hopes but Adam Smasher isn't the type to spare people's lives. He's borderline cyberpsycho. The dude loves killing and doesn't know the meaning of mercy. He's been that way since he was a kid. His whole job at that point was to take people out and he was really good at it. He was bassicly Arisaka's angel of death. If somebody was a major threat and needed to be dealt with quick and easy they would send in Adam Smasher. So in other words there's no way David would have survived that encounter.

It's a good point about Arasaka wanting to preserve David in some way, makes a lot of sense! But I would be wary of any season 2 that follows "actually-he's-alive" David. Seems like it would be very difficult to do without cheapening season 1, which was clearly written as a standalone story.

Considering that it was meant to be a single season, I don't think they considered that it would be a huge hit. They might change their minds in the future about season 2 or sequel, but it might take some time before we hear anything, but it's not impossible considering it was really well received and essentially revived the game. Just needs a lot of planning and the fact that CDPR is happy with the results, we probably will see another season or sequel.

I think david's death was as clear as it can be. The trope of not showing the protagonist dead, is often to leave their demise more impactful with this exact same feeling of hope, so that we miss him more. When Smasher brings up the notion of David becoming a construct, David refuses. To which Smasher responds with 'Oh Well' and points his arm cannon at David's head. Then comes the lighting effect on David's face followed by a transition that implies that David has been shot in the head. Adam's comment, at first seemed to be him respecting David's wish to not be Arasaka property. However it's also possible that Adam may have meant that what happened to David was no longer up to him anymore. Dick references in the series name (and Rebecca's thigh tattoo), but we see things David realistically couldn't. Faraday and the Saka investigators, Lucy's activities out of his sight, Kiwi trying to reassure herself on her backstabbing and shift blame for the sake of a guilty conscience, as well as her running from her pursuers, Becca and Kiwi talking behind David's back, Lucy and Falco escaping... and especially Lucy on the moon. Then there's the fact that Kurosaki should have no ability to replicate anything relating to the Cyberskeleton, a fact mentioned elsewhere in the comments. Simulation, while genre appropriate, seems unlikely imo.

You can see the hole in David's skull in the op. 0:52 Copium, there's no way David would let Falco give his mother's jacket to V even more so, let him wear it for the rest of the game. It also make more sense for Falco to recover it from the badlands since no one would pick an interest to a kibble eater jacket. 2:31 It's impossible to turn a headless body into an engram. Braindance is a simulation pov to an already existing memory. Engrams only has fake memories as unintentional side effects, it's not Arasaka's master plan. Even the Nightcorp can only alter a person's preference and erase memories. 4:24 Arasaka would have used him against V after the fight with smasher but they didn't since they couldn't. 5:24 He doesn't have a corpo dad to back him up this time. All he has is reinforced hands, kung fu cyber chip, and a Braindance rig. He still doesn't stand a chance against Lucy even if he chrome up and he's not in the position (An Arasaka family member) to "force" Adam to hunt Lucy to the moon. 6:16 This suicidal act is against what David wished for her, there's no cure but to be an engram yourself. Her being a phenotype means more attention from Arasaka since she can be a vessel for the devil ending V. She survived this long without attention since Arasaka could just aquire another batch of Netrunner children. 7:00 Dignified way of ending it. Last time fans pressured CDPR to release the game, it came out as hot bowl of fried bugs. Sorry but I can only see number 1 as the only possible way for moving forward. It doesn't need to be a season 2 sequel, it can also be a prequel or spin-off. Maybe because one of my favorite webnovel is an Anthology series itself [BRAIN Anthology] from webtoon. I have a good time reading through it.
@bumperjumper2 жыл бұрын
A couple points: David would have no say in who gets his jacket since he would be under Arasaka’s control. The last we see of David could be smasher shooting his torso or using the tranquilizer rounds from the game. Lastly, the technology to read and interpret people’s lives already exists inside bds since we see the dolls in the game know everything about you through the technology I think lots of people are worried season 2 might not be executed well but done well it would be an absolute banger

@@bumperjumper I highly doubt that tranquilizer rounds would spill any blood What I mean regarding BD's is there's need to be existing memory foundation. @lemao22222 жыл бұрын
@@bumperjumper 1 - The anime does enough for you to understand what happened to David in his final moments without being explicit about it. It's a blood red splash jutting from his forehead. Choosing to go "We didn't explicitly see his brains splattered all over the place, so he didn't die" is denial, plain and simple. And even if they made an engram of David's dead remains, we can see what a dead person's engram looks like in the game. Spoilers: It's not a digital conscience. It's more like a broken record of their final moments. 2 - Adam has no say in who becomes a construct or not. He wasn't even making an offer, he's just lamenting that his fun is over and that it would be entertaining for him if David became a construct (so that Adam could continue massacring him). What you need to understand about Adam Smasher's purpose within Arasaka, is that he isn't deployed when Arasaka wants discretion. Put it this way: While Militech dispatched an entire army to deal with the Cyberskeleton and David's crew, Arasaka has Adam. Neither would've gone to such lenghts if they had any interest in recovering anything from it. 3 - Ah, you fell for one of the oldest tricks in the book: Fortune-telling. let me explain: Look, Braindances are just next-gen movies. They are *not* simulations. When David goes through the cyberpsycho BD in Jimmy Kurosaki's basement, it looks like he killed those cops by accident. In reality, he literally couldn't help doing it, because those are not *his* actions. Those were the actions of the cyberpsycho that recorded it. The "it's all a BD" theory is terrible, because it implies David got replaced in Maine's crew. Someone else took Maine's arm. Someone else took over Maine's crew. Lucy fell in love and moved in someone else's apartment. Rebecca sacrificed her life for someone else. And someone else fulfilled Lucy's dream of going the moon. Either way, the characters people fell in love with and griefed all died or faded into obscurity: It just means none of those people are called David Martinez. Dolls on the other hand are living drones that allow their bodies to be controlled remotely by someone or something. In the case of Clouds, they let what I can assume is a neural network, or "dumb AI", constructed from a psychological profile, control their bodies. Those are not memories. They are a set of instructions based on that profiling. Psychological profiling is nothing new, we've been doing it irl for a while now. It's how the aforementioned fortune-telling and criminal profiling works, albeit in a less advanced way. Now imagine if, instead of submitting someone through tests and interrogations, you could gather that data by simply plugging a usb cable and run some tests directly against a system that contains personal information and monitors vital signs to figure out what makes someone tick? So you see, the dolls at cloud don't know everything about about V. In fact, they don't know much at all. Notice how their statements are vague. It sounds accurate because it aligns with V's current situation. But they never say anything specific about V. They never mention Johnny Silverhand. They never mention V getting headshot and coming back from the dead. They don't even reference your chosen lifepath. It's all leading statements and educated guesses based on the information V gave at the reception desk. And you, the player, fill the gaps all on your own. That's how the trick works. Remember River Ward's questline? How they needed to make the serial killer dream of their childhood in order to record it as a virtu and analyze it? That wouldn't have been necessary if doll technology allowed people to just extract memories straight out of someone's brain, would it? Tl;dr: even in 2077 there's still no virtual reality that is so close to the original, it could fool anybody. BDs don't give you the agency of a sandbox or simulated world, they just allow someone to backseat an experience. VR and AR are still distinguishable enough from real life that only those who lost touch with reality might get lost in it. Even Mikoshi, the state of the art in personality construct, was not a perfect simulacrum: Johnny was quite aware of his status as a construct over the 50 years he spent there. During their first interactions, Johnny mutters to himself that he's just a copy and the real one must be out there somewhere, while V crawls on the floor. CDPR already confirmed they will be expanding the Cyberpunk setting with multiple media formats, so we can expect a second Cyberpunk show or a movie. But it's highly unlikely it will be a direct sequel to Edgerunners, featuring the same characters, save for maaaaybe a few cameos or references.

Preserving David as a research asset makes the most sense by far for all the characters & corpos involved. It would honestly be weird if they didn't do that. Since the brain dance guy was so good at making brain dances, and he had a new one that was so powerful who’s to say it wasn’t a brain dance that had immense practicality of predicting the near future through extreme likely possibilities. No, it doesn’t predict the future but through chances it predicts the most likely outcome in turn helping David see what the future held had he not listened to Rebecca to cut the upgrades and things like that. I’d love to see a second season where something similar to that happens if in fact the entire season 1 was a simulation.

@@bumperjumper I'm super late to this discussion but this would only work if he was an Arasaka drone completely brain washed. David, as the kid phenom from the streets who had a meteoric rise as an Edgerunner with a strong sense of loyalty to his crew, is dead. His entire goal was to achieve his mom / Maine / Lucy's dreams. He accomplished all of those in a way, especially for Lucy. He accomplished all of his goals (others goals) and did something worthy of having his own drink. David had an arc ending similar to Spike Spiegel- both die with a smile on their face, showing they're content with how it all played out.

Hmmm David as the new Smasher does sound interesting, but if they go that route and Lucy comes to bring him back, I get the feeling that Lucy wouldn't survive at the end.

I like the idea of an anthology series that explores the good, the bad and the very ugly side of life in Night City. As much as I liked EdgeRunners and it's bittersweet ending, an arc involving David's son would be interesting but if it takes place before the events of CyberPunk 2077 then it would also be a series where he would likely be doomed to fail, especially if his revenge would be against Adam instead of Arasaka Corp as a whole. If it were to happen afterwards then there is a lot more leeway. . Very much for the idea of a season that shows David's and the team's growth between Eps 6 - 7. The idea that it was a braindance edit and he was still in the lab being tortured could offer some possibilities as long as they don't ret-con things.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere where they actually talk about the possibilities of a second season, and without going into it too much it was basically said that if there is a second season it most likely wouldn't have anything to do with David. It would be cool if they actually did a continuation, but I'm leaning more towards another standalone with different characters and plot.

Now we need a Nomad, and a Corpo story.

What I would well and prefer here is for Cyberpunk to get some kind of storyline where these constructs are a bigger focus in some sort, with David maybe referenced in the smallest degree or maybe some kind of kick in the balls to arasaka with David there in some sense at large.

I think itll be awsome if season two will be about maine and the process of him discovering the team, the process of how his cyberpsychosis got worse. We see maine already worse with cyberpsychosis in this season but we didnt see the long term degradation of his mental health before david was in the picture. We also see him in sashas music video.
