Van Halen's impact was seismic. I don't think the band truly knew what it was like for us - obsessively playing the albums, drawing the VH emblem everywhere, talking about them constantly. Van Halen permeated everything in youth culture back then. The band was of course on the inside looking out, creating the music, playing it live, transmitting it globally to millions in concerts and videos. I don't think they could have fully known their impact. It was just so massive.

David Lee Roth knew what it was like for people because he has this biggest ego in music history he was full of himself before he was famous. Eddie and Alex had no clue atleast for a while they were really about the music not about being rockstars. Later on Eddie definitely had an ego of sorts but it was a lot of him talking about people copying his style so it really wasn’t a bad thing it was true after Van Halen came out all the sudden everyone wanted to be a finger tapping, light speed playing guitar hero sure Eddie didn’t invent tapping but he made it popular nobody was doing it to the point he was then every band had shredding I mean shit bands like Chicago and journey even had some finger tapping and shredding that I would say wouldn’t have happened had Eddie not came around not that there would be no shredding but bands wouldn’t have felt like every song needed a solo like they did in the 80’s which was funny because even Eddie said if a song doesn’t need a solo then it doesn’t need a solo.

I'm just tired of having Eddie Van Halen shoved down my throat as the be all and end all of guitar player's that's what turned me off about him. He didn't invent what he did he tweaked it and added his own things to it. I like guitar but get tired really quick with those gimmicks.

Growing up in Valencia, now Santa Clarita City, back in the 80's me and my friends spent a lot of time at Magic Mountain. We all had season passes. One night me and a friend where making our way through the park when David Lee Roth came up from behind us and put his arms over our shoulders and said "You look like a couple of Van Halen fans." Where like wow ya sure. He then tells us that he paid Magic Mountain something like $100,000 for a party of him and 100 guests to have preferential treatment. He also had them put a car on backwards on the roller coaster Colossus. At that time he had just gotten there with only himself and his driver and when asked where his 100 guests where he said they are all in the park and he hadn't met them yet. We where the first two to join his party and ride the Colossus backwards. In the relatively short walk to the Colossus I believe he had collected his 100 guests. He just had that in your face charisma. No matter where he went he was there and you wouldn't soon forget it. One part of the preferential treatment that he paid for was being able to cut right to the front of the line, him and all 100 of his "guests" which started to piss some people off that had been waiting in line patiently for how ever long. Something I couldn't blame them for. So we hung around for a bit and went on some rides but growing up there we had ridden all of the rides a thousand times and didn't care to ride them again so after a bit we went on our merry way. But that was the time I met David Lee Roth.

Even though deathly ill, and not able to go, Dave sent a limo for me to the US Festival... It changed the lives of my sons, both in moving upward Punk Bands.........they decided being famous was not so great when they saw the crowds bend the cyclone fencing to keep them OUT at each limo, and the rage when it was NOT some star, but just family and friends.........they said, those fans can be very dangerous....not fun........and it helped me to say, what can I do today, to "contribute" and go back to my career .....since I had a prognosis of impending death......just being "contributing" has kept me going for a lot of years, along with enjoying what I do, no matter how heartbreaking the work I am often given working with veterans, first responders, and high risk youth and their families.

Amen. He answered Joe twice. First, all the people we played for shaped us, made us more versatile. So when we started putting out original stuuf, we knew who to target and when. We were a band that everyone could relate to. Second, yeah, James Brown and Jagger influenced us. What I did was nothing new and you see it to this day. Yeah, we knew the impact, but we knew it wasn't something WE started originally. Hey never mentioned playing for black people, but one of Van Halen's greatest hits: "Wild Thang" by Tone Loc, the "Jaime's crying" sample. There's your impact.

Get more rock n rollers on! Get Robert plant
@dannyd56975 жыл бұрын
Robert Plant story you'll like: A friend of mine works for the gov. I'm not sure of the exact location he was at when this happened, embassy maybe??? Anyway, it's where people who want to come to the US to visit have to go before they get on their planes or ships to come here. There's 2 lines, a VIP line and a regular Joe line. Plant waited with the regular people. When he got up to the desk, this girl who was maybe 20- having no clue to who he was- asked what he did. "I"m a musician." "Oh, anyone I've heard of?" "Led Zeppelin." "We're ya any good?" "I guess we were ok." "How many records did ya sell?" "I don't know. 20 million maybe." Obviously I'm not sure of the exact words, but on and on she went, becoming more and more of a cunt towards Plant as the conversation went on. Finally she did let him through though. Plant was a class act the whole way. Somehow her manager got wind of how he treated him and blew his stack. So the manager tries to go make it up to Plant, and Plant is a good guy to him too. My buddy, who wasn't a big fan of Led Zeppelin before this, really became a big fan of Plant that day. For what it's worth, he's got stories of other people- Madonna is one I remember- where those people are nothing but assholes. If he had a dollar for every time someone said "How can you not know who I am? Do you live under a rock!!?!?!?" (or some form of that statement) he'd be a millionaire.

@@dannyd5697 whats strange about your story is the 20yo girl was asking him all in past tense"were you any good?""how many records did you sell" (still sell) and why would she assume he was not in a band anymore(he is) and making music(he is ) and selling albums? Just because he is old? maybe this is some urban legend type story passed around, like the fishing stories where the minnow ends up a 20lb tuna? lolhmf
@dannyd56975 жыл бұрын
@@packman5906 - What's strange about your reading comprehension is I stated I didn't know the exact words of the conversation. The basic point that Robert Plant waited in the average Joe line, then dealt admirably with some kid who was a total cunt to him stands. My friend is back in the US, but for awhile either he or others he worked with dealt with all kinds of those types of people. It's not like he'd tell me about them unless they were out of the norm positive, like Plant or Harrison Ford- or brutal, like Madonna. I told the story because the OP wanted Robert Plant to be a guest of Joe's. I figured he'd like it. I didn't realize someone was going to over analyze it and get all uptight that I didn't remember 100% of the exact words. I do want to congratulate you. I've relayed that story a few times. No one has ever cried over it until you. Happy tears to ya. You have a great day.
