The way Eddie rigged his pedalboard and amps with custom modifications helped him with the tone. It's insane. Obviously its truly all in the hands, but damn he sure did go true mad genius on how he modded some of the gear specs on his own.

When you say modded and rigged, exactly how? Do you know? Did he go as far as opening the pedals up and changed things inside creating tweaks in the circuits or what? This is an honest question, don't know much about van Halen

www.vogue.com/article/david-lee-roth-ink-tattoo-van-halen/amp Read this all idiots who don’t know anything about octaves! Excerpt: Were you born with a five-and-a-half octave voice, or is that something you achieved through relentless training? I was taught early on from my singing coaches when I was 15 or 16, “Sing with the girls.” To me, that’s Chaka Khan, Aretha. They also taught me to practice foreign accents and to sing in other languages-this works with the 17 or 18 different muscles that affect your armature.

I’m sick of people saying Dave was never able to sing. Was he a Mercury type singer? No, but he had an awesome Rock/Blues voice. It didn’t last him very long, but he had it. You can’t blame it all on drugs, smoking and drinking. Most rock singers do all that shit and still maintain a good singing voice into their 60s. Unfortunately, Dave was not as lucky. His forte was machismo and a very visceral type of singing from the 70s through the mid 80s. By the 90s his vocal power was gone. He can still get it done in the studio, but live is rough. I have to say, he did really well on the 2007-2008 tour. I don’t know how he pulled it off, but that tour exceeded my expectations. I saw them twice. The 2012 and 2015 tours weren’t as strong vocally.

Yep! I like this raw live recording much better than the boring, generic studio version with Sammy Hagar. Its actually a good song when done right, I would have never known. If I ever need something to bore me to sleep, I can always play the original version. Sam did a great job on the history of rock tour, but I really wish he would shut his yap, there never has been anybody that talks so much about their former band than Sammy Hagar. If it wasnt for VH Hagar would have certainely been on the state fair circuit long ago. Nice bass playing by Mike on this song. He may have never officially said he quit, but by going off with Sammy Hagar when Sam and Ed were at odds, he pretty much signed his resignation, then got to play the good guy. Mike knew very well how Sam thought about VH playing with DLR after he quit again, or was told to take a hike depending on who you "choose" to believe. "Unforgivable" would be Sams words, what made Mike think it would be ok? Mike seams like a real great guy, but lets face it, we all would still know who Eddie, Alex, and Dave are, regardless if Mike was never in the band. Cant say the same for MA. As far as back up vocals go, I agree that Eddie's voice is just as much of an important part of the back of the vocals in VH. I've listened to just about every early live recording and there are times when eds not singing, because of guitar duties,, and I wished mike would back off a some. Like just stick to backing up the vocals, your feeling it a bit to much, no one cares for lead back up vox, their chief.
