How in the world do you NOT mention Greg Bissonette. He just got voted Best Overall Drummer by Modern Drummer Mag. As a drummer Greg is equal to both Bill and Steve

The skit at the beginning of the song is hilarious!!! It's what was fun of the 80s. No one took the stereotypes seriously, whether they were true or not. It was all in fun. Loved it!!!! 😂😂😂😂

This song is a tribute to the Statue of Liberty in New York. It was released around the time it was being renovated, so interest was high in the statue.

Yes, this is a tribute to America most people don't realize it. America, She's a vision from coast to coast, the words are there its just the visuals that confuse people.

Yankee rose was just simply an all American girl. This song was Diamond Dave’s coming out party after parting ways with Van Halen. The “ guess who’s back in circulation” was specifically aiming at just that.

Dave was a huge personality, I'm sure he could get tiresome at times due to to his constant desire to create a spectacle. But when he hit the stage, he really delivered the goods!

Welcome to the late 80s, dramatic, crazy, amazing, entertaining, individual, fun loving. Not the cynicism of the internet era. Much prefer the 80s. Steve Vai was a legend. His ability to turn the guitar into a talking person (effectively) was great.

I saw Diamond Dave in Copenhagen many years ago where Dave after a small break in the music suddenly came out standing on a surfboard carried by 6 big buff types was dancing on the board through the public.....doing his "Monkey hour" (as he likes to describe it when he´s going full in). He always give the audience what they wanted to see/hear...one of the best frontmen a band could have. Unfortunately for Van Halen both Dave and Eddie are big personalities...and it had to come to a crash at some point. Still they did truly great music.

80s was the age of MTV and they made special effort at music videos to entertain the teens of that era and 90% of the teens kept the tv on mtv 24/7. This was a great era for music

These 2 guys are part of Daves buddies. He to go to Papa New Guinea and hang with the native peoples when he wasn't touring. The headress was supposedly to celebrate their culture in his adventures. He was just having fun😂 I went to this concert my senior year and the next one Skyscraper a few years later. The entire concert was like this! His band was so perfect for his first 2 solo albums

I was 15 when this video aired. One o the few videos that defined the 80’s. Flashy , over the top and fun. As far as the skit goes, nobody cared. Back then we were able to separate reality from entertainment. We all knew it was silly and over exaggerated. It was David Lee Roth for gods sakes!

Some context. This was the 80's. DLR and VH had broken up and this was basically his "in your face" to VH. Yes, the crotch shots and all that are cringy, but were very normal DLR behavior at the time. Side note, but Steve Via (guitar) and Billy Sheehan (bass) were considered at that time 2 of the best at their respective instruments. Sort of a "super group" at the time. Check out some of Steve Vai's solo stuff or maybe his "Highly Strung" with Orianthi (fantastic female guitarist). Yes its silly, but take it for what it is. lol
@randomhockeyguy9149
@randomhockeyguy9149 Жыл бұрын
Adding more to the DLR band and VH going back and forth, this song is from the album "Eat 'Em and Smile," to which Van Halen's next album was named OU812 (Oh, You Ate One Too?). A little bit of back and forth subtle shots. But as you said, Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan were (and still are) two of the best with their instrument. "Replacing" Eddie wasn't an easy task, but Vai was probably the best choice Dave could have made.

A large portion of Europeans view all U.S. citizens as "Yankees"....kind of like everyone from Mexico views everyone not from Mexico as "Gringos." While in the U.S., we (those of us in the south, for the most part) consider anyone born and raised in New England (Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island) as "Yankees."

Even for the 1980s this video was a bit over the top. One of my aunts called him a pervert when he was showing his butt cheeks in spandex pants. But that was Dave being Dave, the leader of the immoral majority, as he liked to describe himself. He's a lot older now but still in great shape from all the martial arts training he's done for several decades.

Want a real treat? .. Go watch Steve Vai - Teeth Of The Hydra (Official Music Video) .. Then go catch some of Steve Vai's other songs, like "For The Love Of God", "Whispering A Prayer", "Tender Surrender" .. etc. This will show you a little bit of the raw talent that Roth was able to attract into his band, one of the best guitarists and bassists (Billy Sheehan) in the world. Fantastic stuff! Also check out many of the other song that the David Lee Roth band produced, like "Just Like Paradise", "Ladies Night In Buffalo" and others.

Don't beat yourself up about thinking it was about New York. It's a song about the Statue Of Liberty, and she stands in...... New York! So you were right. One thing she said made me laugh. Van Halen, they politely asked him to leave.... Well, no. It was a fight that divided Rock and Roll fans to this day. People in the US will still fight over the Sammy vs Dave thing. At the time, I was team DLR. As it turns out, Sammy had the longer, more successful career, but I stand by the statement that, in his prime, there was no one cooler than David Lee Roth. When he was told that Sammy Hagar would be replacing him, he said, "Well, I hear Sam throws a Hell of a party, but I AM the party"!
