Julia Child shows what a great improvisor she was ~ who would have guessed she could wield a blow torch like that? :) I think this is from 1987 - my apologies for the choppy editing; i taped this near the end of a tape and wanted to make sure it didn't run out before the segment was over :)

I love Julia Child's personality. Wish we had people like her stick around longer so they can teach the tragically clueless younger generations about real food.

I love how she doesn't miss a beat and keeps pace with all his comedic quips. I guess he forgot that she'd been doing television since he was stocking shelves at the Atlas Supermarket. Can't mess with a legend.

I've been told that a great cook is someone who can work with whatever is in the fridge - and in this case, Julia Child worked with whatever was in the kitchen! AWESOME!! Too bad they didn't have induction stoves yet then, that pan would've been ready in 10 seconds! Happy birthday, Julia Child!! ^_^

I accidentally ordered beef tar tar in France, wow! I heard Julia's voice in the background of my childhood. She is everything that the world isn't today. She is real, honest, sweet, kind tenacious, gracious and smart. Would there even be time for her today, while we watch Tiger, hyped garbage, opinion news, and all the other garbage. She was an artist and a creator an inventor. The media is a brainwash unit. She just wanted to teach.

I think she was such an incredible character. Wonderful voice - you cook pick her, blindfolded, out of crowd of a thousand. Steak Tartare...makes me feel SO hungry but it's Ash Wednesday, so no meat, alas! For a perfect tartare, mince best steak or beef and combine with chopped capers, finely-chopped shallot, a spoon or two of virgin olive oil, freshly-ground black pepper, a pinch of sea salt. Some people also add an egg yolk, but I am not overly keen on that!

@kcsouthend Yes that was their address, I just read it in her book. She was amazing! What's more, she was a REAL chef who learned the correct way of cooking and when she wrote her cookbook, tested her recipes over and over to perfection, researched every ingredient. It's amazing you got to speak to her. Cool!

There used to be a video of Julia and Dave drinking rum or cognac or sherry or something together, straight from the bottle, during one of her cooking segments. It was hilarious. I remember seeing it first-run some time in the early 90s, I believe.

Julia Child, Rest her Soul, was totally awesome in so many ways. And I believe she enjoyed having David Letterman taunt her. David's satire helped bring out the best in Julia's personality.

There's a reason her kitchen is in the Smithsonian: it's not only because she was sweet and a good cook, it's because she had such a great sense of humor to make fun of herself; this clip just proves it. Even David Letterman was on his best behavior for her. She's not an American icon for no reason.

In 1967 I went to the Montreal Expo, where one restaurant's menu offered "Steak Tartare," which it described as including spices, egg, and raw beef. Apparently many of the patrons either could not read or didn't believe what they read, because in addition to this printed description, each menu also included a hand written note, "It's really raw"!
