@@CricketforAmericans it might be memory playing tricks,but honestly I don't remember as many players hit on the head ,as since the helmet era, techniques of batting have changed because if them.There is a famous bit of commentary when Ian Botham hooks a ( Australian of W Indies) fast bowler ,and the commentator says ,"great shot one of those if you miss you die!"The hook shot against a quickie required skill and courage,It still requires both but maybe not as much!

@@keithevans9544 You're correct, since the introduction of helmets batsmen now tend to take their eyes off the ball. Pre helmets it was drummed into players to always watch the ball and very few got hit.

@@CricketforAmericans even though helmets were introduced in the 1970s, some batsmen were noted for never wearing them into the early 1990s, West Indians Viv Richards and Richie Richardson come to mind. Australian Ricky Ponting rarely wore one early in his career (mid 1990s)

David Lloyd is a wonderful story teller and has brilliant comic timing. Arguably one of the funniest commentators in the game right now, even at his age (73). He is affectionately called "Bumble." A Yorkshireman and as tough as they come.
@gzeuskraiste3 жыл бұрын
Firey Fred was the first bowler to take 300 Test wickets, Tests were played far less often in those days. When asked at the time if anyone would ever break his record, Fred said with typical humour and that broad Yorkshire brogue "If he does, he'll be bloody tired!". West Indian spinner Lance Gibbs did eventually pass him as have many bowlers since, with more frequent Test matches, but Fred will always be first.

Jeff Thomson, the fastest bowler ever, by a mile. The secret was in his action, he was a HS javelin champion and his run up and cross legged sling was all javelin action. Speed testing wasn't a thing but in 1975 a university filmed him at random during a game to study the mechanics of bowling, one ball clocked 101mph. just a standard day at the office
@lukemckean61552 жыл бұрын
It’s surprising that no one else has attempted to recreate his action over the years
@EarlJohn61 Жыл бұрын
@@lukemckean6155 from what I understand, in 2000 there was a club cricketer in Brisbane that had a very similar action, but couldn't quite control the ball, so he had to give the game away. If my memory is correct his name was something like: Jaden Thompson... Thommo's nephew.
@billschild33713 жыл бұрын
Another story Kerry O'Keeffe tells is of Thommo smashing the white pickets on the boundary regularly at the South Sydney oval when the club wicket-keeper couldn't take the ball. The groundsman got sick of him.

Ian Chappell, the Australian captain during the mid 1970s, tells a story where Thomson bowled a bouncer that flew over Rod Marsh's (Australian wicket keeper) head and half-volleyed the fence. All the catchers behind the wicket (the slips) started laughing. The batsman, Chappell says, made the mistake of look around to see what happened and turned white as a sheet!

Bumble's impersonation of Fred Trueman was spot on. Fred was a great character who retired from the game before I was aware of it but I remember him being in the commentary box for many years. One of Fred's daughters married the son of Raquel Welch.

In the days of Thomo, it was the Sand Shoe Crusher that ended up causing much of the damage. He would fire that ball in at 95 miles per hour with an in-swinging Yorker and SMASH the tops of the batsmen's feet. I don't think there has been a fast bowler than enjoyed hurting batsmen as much as Thomo, with the exception of a few classic West Indian bowlers that seemed to RELISH seeing Aussie batsmen bleeding lol. As for David Lloyd, god love him. That man can make the phone directory sound funny lol. My two favourite poms, David Lloyd and, of course, Freddie Flintoff .... both absolute beauties!

Hi David Lloyd great after dinner speaker from Lancashire, was England couch, Jeff Thomson my boyhood favorite. I remember him bowling for Middlesex v Australia in 1981 at Lord's he was pissed he had not been picked for Australia made Wayne Daniel look like a medium pacer. Ashes is steeped in history goes back to 1882, when Australia 1st beat England and a newspaper quoted a fake obituary of English cricket, hence the 2 countries compete over the others cricket. There has been a few instances the famous bodyline tour of 1932-33, they had to change the laws after that tour, to many injuries when the bowlers actually aimed at the batsmen. But all love in peace and war. A bit of history and hopefully this is not blocked as it comes from lords cricket ground the 1948 game. A quiz Who are the two cricketing knights? Name the stands named after two players at lords? Who was the squadron leader who won the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) ? kzbin.info/www/bejne/ol7biYB-jbqAkMk

Welcome to the wonderful world of "Bumble" (David Lloyd), one of the best commentators / story tellers around! And as a batter who started playing in the mid 1970's I can tell you that NOTHING was exaggerated about those pink litesome boxes (Abdominal Guards, or I believe that Americans call them a Cup) they were horrific. And no, we didn't have jockstraps, they went straight down your briefs/y-fronts and you could damn well bet that it would just move slightly, the moment before you got hit on it. Your testicles would beat a hasty retreat, you'd come over all hot and sweaty and invariable end up dry-retching at the side of the wicket whilst someone from the boundary would be shouting "Don't rub 'em, Count 'em!" And everyone else would be "Laughing in sympathy" at you.

Back in Jeff Thomson's day, the ball speed was recorded after the bounce, now days it's recorded out of the hand; so Thommo was much faster than his official timing.

Nothing exaggerated. Back in the 1970's, I saw Thommo bowl along with his partner in crime, Dennis Lillee, who was more artistic. Thommo was simply a bloody scud missile. Yes, he was quick, which is danger within itself, but the scariest thing for the batsman is that Thommo himself did not know where the ball was going to land. This made it virtually impossible to have a game plan against him when he bowled. Check out some West Indian fast bowlers like Andy Roberts, Michael Holding (known as "Whispering Death"), because even the umpire could not hear him approaching the bowling crease. Other "Windies" artisans include; Sir Viv Richards, Courtney Walsh, Curtly Ambrose.... Too many names to list in one hit.

Hey nick, please react to the Greatest Test Match of all time. India vs Australia in 2001 in Kolkata. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4KqhYueprugebM) This really was the greatest Test of all time 1) Australia was probably the best team EVER at this point. On the other hand, India was ranked #6 or #7 at the time. 2) Australia entered the match on a streak of a record 16 consecutive wins. It had been 2 years since they drew, let alone lost, a test before this! This was the closest to invincible than any team had ever reached, before this match. By contrast, India had lost all of their prior 6 Tests. 3) India was missing their two best bowlers of the time, Kumble and Srinath, while Australia was full strength. 4) VVS Laxman and Harbhajan Singh were nobodies before this Test. They both PERMANENTLY performed at a higher level for a full decade after this test. There was a permanent improvement in their player performance. 5) India's first-ever hat trick and highest score to date were in this Test. 6) Sachin Tendulkar's 3/31 at the end were a nice touch, correcting his batting failures. Despite Harbhajan at one end, Australia would have managed a draw if Tendulkar hadn't taken Hayden, Gilchrist, and Warne's wickets at the other end. Remember that Hayden was untroubled by Harbhajan, so there absolutely had to be wickets from the other end. 7) This test STILL makes teams afraid to enforce follow ons, even 14 years later. You might find some familiar names in the Australian Team like Justin Langer, Hayden and Ponting whom you saw on the series 'The Test'.
