@@richardcahill1234 You don't appear to understand how TV works. In Television the PRODUCER is the author, not the DIRECTOR. If they let every director who works on a TV-series a year do their own thing, it would feel like 20 different shows with 20 different styles. So the producer enforces a sort of general sameness among them, thus giving the show a consistent atmosphere and style, rather than sporadically going all over the place. - Lynch PRODUCED season 1, therefore he had more creative freedom. Lynch lost some of his producer control on season 2, hence he quit the show after Episode 9. After that, it was just Mark Frost basically doing whatever the network told him to do. They realized the error of their ways when neither they or Frost had knew how to end the season, so they let Lynch come back and do the season finale with complete creative freedom. It was too little too late, however, as the ratings had already dropped because of the quality of the episodes in-between he didn't produce, thus practically nobody saw the finale and the show got cancelled. - He attempted to rejuvenate interest with the film, but failed. Twin Peaks season 3, completely produced by David Lynch and Mark Frost with no interference by Showtime executives, is the first time they've EVER had the creative control typically allotted to TV producers.

I swear, whenever I look anywhere else online everyone sings praises of it and can't understand why some people didn't enjoy it, either saying that these people "just don't get it" or "should just go and watch more 'simpler' shows which don't make you think as much". It's nothing about thinking, Season 3 was just boring. End of. What's fun about watching a comatose Dale Cooper going to work and spazzing out? Totally agree on Inland Empire too.

@Lisa Heisey: Well Mr. Lynch of course has always had a particularly unique perspective on _Dune_ [1984], moreso than any viewer could, having a lot do with the work involved (including, but not limited to, dealing with Studio MBAs and such, ooo, what many a great filmmaker has said about that!), while the viewer sees only the end-product, which I've always thought highly of. Thus I've never had any problem understanding and wholly respecting his position on the (I've always thought) top-notch 1984 Sci-Fi film. I must say I'm glad that he's setting the record just a little bit more straight than it was: David Lynch never disowned the original theatrical release of _Dune_ [1984]. It was the later "Extended Cut" that he totally left to "Alan Smithee". Just as well, I'm sure, as the original "Directed by David Lynch" theatrical version is the GOOD version anyway hehehehehehehe Even no less than Frank Herbert himself approved of the film (AFAIK, that is) hehehehehe

In his book you can tell David had a lot of fun making Dune. The way he writes about it, it seems he was very enthusiastic about the project all the way up until it came time to edit it. And even despite that disappointment still has a very positive outlook on the actual process that occurred before editing.

I’m rewatching Dune now and I’ve paused it at the VFX shot where the Atreides ships are entering the Navigator ship. They’re going through this huge golden portal and it’s straight from my dreams. Vast and inexplicably decorated like illuminated script or some Hindu temple from myth. There aren’t many films that can evoke that sense of awe and unease in me and I love the whole movie for it.

I get where you're coming from but I disagree. This is like saying 'Lord of The Rings would have been forgotten forever without Peter Jackson'. It helped, but come on; it's the books themselves and the unique way Herbert crafted his Sci-Fi - it's been floating in the back of writers minds since the 60s. Finally, Villeneuve's version is doing it proper justice on screen.

Honestly I feel like a big issue with Dune Came from Lynch though. The film's overall oppressive atmosphere, the hideous character and costume designs which weren't in the book, it feels like the root issue with the film was that he was trying too hard to make it unsettling and repulsive when the books were supposed to be fantastical and imaginative.

I watched the heck out of his Dune movie. Was young when it came out, and it was so disturbing you couldn't stop watching. I read the book for the first time a few years ago and realized all the twisted things he added to the story that I actually missed in the book. The heart plugs the Harkonens (sp) install in slaves, and the fact they make Thufir milk a hairless cat to get the antidote. So bizarre and creepy - he made that family so much more menacing and f'ed up than the books or current movies

I agree that remakes of great movies are almost always pointless and not very good, but making another adaptation of a book is a whole different thing. Would you call Joel Coen’s upcoming Hamlet movie a remake? I would hope not.

I love Lych's version of Dune, always have!!! Both are good and both reflect what could and can be done in the industry at its time. Lych's captures MY imagination better and the new one is more polished. But i really love the bold visuals in the 84 version. Not sure why it was "hated it, so much' it's a movie to entertain not a philosaphy class on the book!!!! Enjoy life's moments, take in the aesthetics of the moment, be open to the different interpretations. We all see things based on our own personal likes and dislikes, it's ok to change your mind about your own perceptions. I think it used to call that 'growth"

The paradox of David Lynch's Dune is that in this film there are no mysteries and specific features peculiar to his films. It perfectly combines a video sequence with divine music. Some scenes are a real work of art. This is the talent of David Lynch. I don't even want to discuss Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Villeneuve, in my opinion, simply doesn't know how to make a movie.

Creative control means everything. To me, Dune always seemed like an unfinished film. It was immediately apparent that the studio had tampered with David Lynch's vision. Same as Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. It was a mess. But Denis Villeneuve Dune is incredible. 100% his vision.

Without Lynch's Dune screenplay, the the newer Dune 1&2 movies likely wouldn't exist. He laid the blueprint for the book that many belived could not be adapted to the screen. If you comptyhe book to all of the screen versions of Dune, you'll see that without him, there are no dune films at all. The new one borrow very heavily from that original screenplay.

Dune's failure is a rare example of Hollywood people learning and burying the hatchet. Producer Dino De Laurentiis listened to Lynch and allowed total freedom on his next film, Blue Velvet.

Subtract the final cut, there is not a single way in which Villeneuve's movies are not superior.
