Stand up comedians find a niche. Late night host appeal to the lowest common denominator. They need a massive audience to be successful. Louie’s actual standup is just about as good as anyone’s - and he’s got a really special skill with being hilarious… But he’s also got a ridiculously brilliant skill with creating this kind of excruciating tension of awkward, uncomfortable dramatic moments - the genius of a comedian who can stay in those moments without resolving them or giving his audience a silly way out, where the tension is broken. Like in Horace and Pete. The emotions are just so raw; it’s not exactly a pleasure, but it’s absolutely worthwhile.

Louie has said in an interview that he specifically wanted Lynch to do everything exactly like he would normally and not "act a character", so this is pretty much what he's actually like. The difference with real life is ofc that Lynch is never artificially put in a position to look like an asshole the way he comes off here. That being said his actors love him, but even they would admit that he's made them extremely frustrated on occasion. Watts has even cried on set several times. I just think Louis CK is underrated man... To me He is not only the best comedian ever. The shows He produced, Louie and Horace & Pete are just masterpieces. They are both so original, and man... Scenes like that, the acting, everything, I can't even explain. It's so amazing.
@XyarroX2 жыл бұрын
Not underrated at all. He was on his way to be remembered as the best comedian of all time. His controversy put a mark on his career and reputation though.

This is funny on about 7 different levels from start to finish. There is so much tension, condensation, insecurity, fear and awkward humor all going on at one time. Fucking Brilliant! Lynch was PERFECT for this!!! He's plays a blithering idiot who actually believes and is treated like a true talk show svengali. I love his very academic list of "non-funny" hosts at the outset. He's correct you just never thought you'd hear someone actually verbalize that shit! Also, "See the funny! Make me laugh! GO!" "YOU JUST BOUGHT YOURSELF ANOTHER WEEK! GO HOME AND GET SOME REST!" ROFL!

Wouldn't work better as a heckle than any other heckle. The reason it works so well here is because it isn't a heckle. Jack Dall is brilliantly humorless, and is asking it totally deadpan.

My favorite scene in the return has to be him talking to Lucy over the phone and he just sits their baffled at Lucy's cluelessness. After she mentions her trip to Bora Bora, he just sits their with this expression on his face that just radiates "Is this woman for real?".

Aww Man. I love Louis CK. I normally find discomfort based humor so uncomfortable that I can't sit through it, but he manages to get the right angle on it where I really enjoy it while still feeling like I'm the dork who'd be making an ass of myself in that situation.
