Seeing as how she followed David to her *death* (and how often she takes life-threatening gigs with him) shows that she deeply cares about him and his well-being. Rebecca actively checked on David’s well-being before and after she noticed his symptoms of cyberpsychosis and got angry with him whenever he disregarded her warnings (yet still followed what his plan was regardless). She liked David, but remained loyal to him and kept her feelings out of it in the end.

He didn't "have to", and that's what's so tragic. He was so focused on getting her to the moon that he couldn't see how she actually felt and that she'd moved on from the moon and just wanted to be with him. But he never took a step back from Edgerunning to actually see what he had to lose, instead assuming he had nothing to lose. And in the end he lost everything except Lucy. He was a kid who never lived up to his true potential because he was so tunnel visioned on filling Maine's role and getting Lucy to the moon.

Kind of a non-important detail, but I like how In the beginning Lucy was taller than David, then by the end of the story David is waaay bigger than Lucy. It sorta represents the “Growth” of their relationship in a way. But at the same time it also represents how distant they became towards the mid-point. David kept juicing himself with more machinery, making himself tougher like Maine. In the process, his mind got more susceptible to Cyber-Psychosis. Lucy (not wanting to involve herself with David’s self-destructive mindset) decided to remain at home. Like any couple, both people had their ways of coping or moving forward after disagreements. Unfortunately, for these two, they got ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Both had experienced life altering events that changed them forever. A constant reminder that the world, as beautiful as it can be, is also a cruel and unforgiving place.

I like the theory that cyber-psychosis isn’t really “caused” by the tech, but rather a byproduct of a dystopian society and a lifestyle that is crippling emotionally. Killing and watching death happen all around you while knowing the powerful forces in charge are responsible for creating these conditions, all combined with the hopelessness of being just another cog in this horrible machine, inevitably leads to a psychotic break. This happens to soldiers in the real world, except in the Cyberpunk universe war life and civilian life are woven together so there’s no escape to process your PTSD. The tech becomes an addiction to escape that pain with the built in justification that it will keep you alive, whereas in the real world soldiers often turn to drugs and alcohol as an escape. David was targeted by Arasaka, Faraday was the dog who found out that Lucy was Davids weakness. Faraday and Arasaka set up the gig involving the cyber skeleton to test it on David. Either way they would have made David implant it. The thing is that Lucy was chased by Arasaka the whole time since she is a precious lab rat for their netrunner team, the team that Lucy was killing off in the background. Arasakas netrunners are like the CIA who knows/finds out everything about their targets. Lucy tryng to erase Davids tracks in the meta is not them going separate ways. They were together but Lucy was hiding her effort to save David. David was also blindly tryng to fullfil Maines wish to be a Legend of Night City. I think most people didnt catch the informations that were reveiled in the Tanaka incident where Maine and Dorio died so im summerize it: Tanaka was desperate to get David back on school bc he is interesting for Arasaka and their tec/science. Lucy dived into Tanakas data and saw that David was targeted, thats why she was so desperate to leave the crew so they can escape together. She also feels guilty about the incident bc she did fuck up the mission hence finding out that David is in great danger (just like her being a escapee from the netrunner lab) David is feeling guilty about Maines death bc he basically learned everything from Maine and wanted to keep up with the crew which meant that he had to match/surepass him. He became obsessed with the thought that he needed to become a legend of Night City (the strongest) for the crew and Maine to create safety for his team. The only thing that bothers me is that Lucy didnt tell him that he is a big target for Arasaka. She wanted David to prosper so she let him take on the role of the edgerunner's leader up to the point where he visibily lost his mind and health. It would have been much more logical to figure out how to escape from Arasaka together imo. She basically let him become a naive superhero so she can work on her own (to save this dumb hero in the background tho)

The poor little man felt so much guilty about the fact that he couldn't save at least one member of his crew that with Lucy was so much desperate that he was willigly to throw away his life to save her and bring her to the moon. While also getting fried by all of those mechanic build into his body.
