The gentleman is Jack Daniels, David's wife's cousin, next to him is David's sister Kari, she's also the trumpet player, then Charlotte Ritchie. David, Jack and David's daughters Callie and Maggie Beth sing this in Carnegie Hall, it sounds incredible with those acoustics. This taping in the Barn was absolutely fabulous, we had a phenomenal time.

You nailed it! This version was done for his Hymnal CD, which takes on the old Hymns and makes them new without changing them - much as he envisions they would have been sung back in the 1800's. Jack Daniels is the 4th (fabulous musician), Carrie (David's sister) is alto in the green and Charlotte Richie is Soprano (the red head). David called it his "Angry A Cappello" version. He said when he was in college a girl stood him up one night so he went back to his room and wrote this Angry A Capello version! It's a classic for those of us who love him!

This is such an incredible arrangement. Absolutely stunning! I love this sung a cappella. David doesn’t just blow everyone away as a singer, but also as an arranger. A true musician’s musician!

Ohhhhh, yeah--that arrangement has David's hand ALL over it. The more videos you come across of him, the more you will start to often be able to recognize his unique style of arrangement. Certainly not every time he arranges something, but often enough that your ear will tell you "Yep--David's been here!!"

Yes, David always arranges things differently and the harmonies are always so beautiful! I believe tge guy is Jack Daniels, who used to be his pianist, also his wife's cousin (if I'm not mistaken). David used to joke he takes Jack Daniel's with him everywhere he goes! Lol

I think it is his piano player, the blond is his sister. David did this arrangement. There is another version from a church in Tennessee with his daughters and I think the pianiast also.

I am not musically inclined but someone with more musical knowledge mentioned the minor keys that this version is sung. Very unusual I guess. Anyway I love acapello and this one is great. David, Jack and his girls sang it at Carnegie Hall in NYC a couple of years ago and the whole house (orchestra too) gave them a standing ovation. The power of David's voice kills me!

The composer of this song who was a slave trader and got saved then he wrote this song. This is a take off of the time of terrible abuse of slave owners and the trade itself. POWERFUL

Another wow performance.....This is one of the best renditions of Amazing Grace I've ever heard. Those key changes....the softness...the control ...the emotion....wow it truly was Amazing Grace. ps I always find myself holding my breath too lol

Great reaction Lyle, kind of like my reaction when I heard this foursome sing this at my very first David Phelps concert in February of 2018! At the meet and greet before this concert, I told him that we were barbershop singers looking forward to hearing some great harmonies that night. Afterwards as he was signing the CD I bought, he said that he remembered that I mentioned barbershop singing and that they added it to the concert for our enjoyment...so very thoughtful! (This is not an easy arrangement to sing!) Is it my imagination or does the first verse with the 3 parts singing the same note against David singing the melody make it sound like bagpipes?

I was a little surprised at David's version of this song (I'm use to the way it's usually sung), but I really like this one. I'm glad you reacted to it and I agree with your comments. Thank you. Another song from David's "Hymnal" cd/dvd is "How Great Thou Art". I must warn you, it's not done the way you are probably use to hearing it. It took me by surprise. I'm use to the solemn version you hear in church or at funerals (it was sung at my grandparents and parents funerals), but David's is lively and he's telling us how great God is and we should rejoice. I love his version and hope you do a reaction to it.

This cover is amazing! These harmonies, the arrangement : PERFECT ! But I can't listen to this cover without singing the bass myself. This is probably the only thing I would fault. I will add a bass :)

David doesn't have a brother. The blonde girl is his sister, Kari Lee, who also plays the trumpet with him. They had an older sister, Sherri, who sang with him until she passed away from cancer.
