A single human brain does not have the bandwidth to suck up all the relevant information and deduce reasonably correct conclusions, about everything all the time. Even if it were possible to get all the relevant information and filter out the crap. Given the impossibility of the task we often adopt the behaviours, assumptions, views, biases, of those around us or those we communicate/identify with most about all kind of things we have never really analysed. Even the most hard nosed, rational, scientist cannot do every possible experiment to prove to himself the validity of theory he uses every day. Arguably that is a good thing overall, else people would never get anything done whilst doing nothing but thinking for themselves.

I hate the phrase “critical thinking”. It still smacks of the right kind of thought, many try to use it to suggest that if people had that skill, they would agree with me. It has the stench of academia about it. Susan Stebbing's brilliant little book “Thinking to Some Purpose”, went the other way and instead of trying to conceptualise what the correct way to think is, she instead identified how not to think which I think is more useful, less political and easier to convey.

@@Kefuddle I'm not familiar with this approach. You're free to criticise critical thinking if you like. It's not about getting you or anyone to think like me but it's more like getting into the why. Freddie's point about everyone increasingly needing to make up their own mind about everything is interesting, but I don't see it when I look around. I see people dividing into tribes and having opinions that go along with that tribe without having done any of their own research. I've done this myself at times. And the truth is that most people don't have the time or the inclination to look up what x famous person said about y in order to form an opinion. They have more immediate concerns. And so they'll go along with what their tribe is saying, on an increasing number of topics as more things get sucked into the culture wars. At the same time, I am seeing some people distancing themselves from their tribe as certain topics cut across traditional political divides eg the anti authoritarian left becoming uncomfortable with the traditional left on issues such as the pandemic and aligning themselves more with the libertarian right. But these are a minority of people. I'm increasingly astonished at the vehemence of people's opinions on things they know (we all know) so little about.

Things seem to go downhill from there when seconds later he explained how we should not censor Robert Kennedy but allow him to make his case, and if indefensible, scientists would then be able to successfully rebut him. How naive a thought from such an educated and intelligent man. According to a brief look at Wikipedia, Mr. Kennedy is a highly educated environment lawyer, not a scientist. If you choose to listen to his thoughts on an oil spill, that's probably reasonable but on vaccine science, you insult me. The people who would listen to Mr. Kennedy are those who have already come to a conclusion on what they believe and are looking for what they believe is credible confirmation. If Twitter follows such a path, I'm certain they will fail to help educate the people who truly are looking for a truthful/accurate format for learning. If profit is Mr. Sachs and Mr. Musk measure of success, I doubt if truth and accuracy will be their yardsticks.
