Shire's music for this is phenomenal. I actually owned it on vinyl for many years until the CD became available. The most clever use of that theme music is at the very end, when Matthau questions Balsam. Just as he leaves and closes the door, Balsam sneezes. The door opens back up, Matthau pops his head in, smiles, freeze frame, cue Shire's music - ba-bom-bom-BOM - and roll those credits baby - this case is solved! Cinematic BLISS!

This has got to be the coolest movie and music score of the 70's. I was 20 when this came out and saw it at the theatre.

Thanks for posting this. This is one of my favorite movies, "Vintage "New York City! I painted a poster in 8th grade of the front of the train with Robert Shaw (R.I.P) in the storm doorway of the front car holding his sub machine gun. I received an Excellent grade on that project! Walter Matthau (R.I.P) played his part "Perfect"! Typical ol' school NYC detective! Thirty-five Cents! Was the train and bus fare back in '74! I watch this movie quite often because I'm a train buff! Once again,,, "Great Movie", and Thanks for posting this!!!

Best David Shire music of all time. I wanted to see the movie after reading the novel, but this theme was what raised hairs on first viewing and stuck with me ever since. Great fusion jazz--and awesome editing. Two thumbs WAY up for this.

Great job, I was kind of hoping you'd end with Matthau's classic facial expression at the end (the best 'take' in film history in my opinion) but I can't have everything. Again, very nice work.

Awesome score! I just watched the DVD. Having never heard about the theme song at all. As soon as the film opened with this groovy funk I was sold. I said "I don't care what the rest of the movie is like, this theme is so badass I give the film a thumbs up just for the song." The movie was really good too. I'm giving it 4 of 5 stars on Netflix.

One of my all-time fav movies. Love it. Takes itself seriously but still lots of funny lines all serving to illustrate the cynicism of 70s NYC. "What the hell do they expect for their lousy 35 cents, to live forever?" -always loved that line.

I owned this soundtrack on VINYL back in the day, and eventually upgraded to the CD, of course. Over 30 years later it's STILL one my all time favourites. Why oh WHY can't any composer's today come up with grooves like this? It's all overblown symphonias or undercooked, flavourless synthesized robomusic from the Hans Zimmer Factory®. Lose the synths, fire three quarters of the orchestra and get back to basics, people! TRY and come up with something this good. PLEASE!

No question about it, copout69, the '70's films had a raw, realistic, non-formula air about them that's yet to be replicated successfully. I grew up as a teenager with these films and still love to rent them often. And don't forget "Dog Day Afternoon", "Taxi Driver", and "Mean Streets".
