With good writers and better production Colin Baker's Doctor would have become an absolute fan favourite on the television screen. Nathan-Turner and the script editors probably took to long during his tenure to soften his image as they always intended to do. Of course Big Finish fans know what an amazing Doctor he was to become however I still have sympathy for Colin that his T.V. persona took to long to settle and he really did get a hard ride in Trial of a Timelord. No offence to Nicola Bryant, she is a great actress but her character as written was not very likeable and this never helped things. Six and Ten Come Back again because together you are a winning combination. You could even call it that!
@DemetriusSorvo2 жыл бұрын
Totally disagree with you. I feel season 22 is right on par with season 12. What I do think is true, is there was a lot of ugly behind the scenes politics that affected the programme. Michael Grade hated Doctor Who and canceled the program telling fans it was because it had become so bad, fans to this day still believe his lie.
@triplejazzmusicisall18832 жыл бұрын
@@DemetriusSorvo Actually I probably didn't express myself very well as I love season 22. I have the deluxe box set on order. I was really coming from the perspective of how the media and some of the masses took issue with it. I forgot and wrote to quickly forgetting to make that clear. I do think one or two stories could have been better written still but most I enjoyed. In fact I might be the only person in the world that liked Timelash (The Borad freaks me out!) Revelation of the Daleks remains one of my top ten Classic Who stories and Sil is one of the best, if not the best, individual baddies to ever be screened. We might differ on Twin Dilemma due to the fact I am one of the many who thought the strangling part too over the top. However if others like it then fine with me. I quite liked Trial of a Timelord but I just thought it maybe not have been the Tardis being drawn in. It blew my mind back then. The surrealism in the matrix was brilliant. So I think we would largely agree on most things. I agree with you about Michael Grade, but I never let that influence me. I think the BBC were very crafty with the deceitful way they managed to get Who of air. Sadly the fight back lost impact with the song, Dr in Distress which was embarrassing. I still think Colin was very unlucky and I still love him as the Doctor and season 22 is still one I have very fond memories of. I would be interested in knowing what you thought of the Whittaker era, but only if you have the time and inclination. Cheers

It worked to great effect in the Angels stories in "Classic Doctors, New Monsters". They also appeared a few times in the River Song's diary box sets and the Eighth Doctor Adventures. The key is in sound design.

They use a musical sting to indicate whenever an angel moves
@EdSigma2 жыл бұрын
@@TheSixthDoctor Precisely, just including the sound of stone shifting whenever they move works well. Plus in this case, the whiteout concept means they have a good reason to say out loud what they're doing.
@TheSixthDoctor2 жыл бұрын
@@EdSigma They always on top of the musical sting have people describe what the angel is doing, whiteout or not. What I described was a character under their influence in conversation with them. Said character kept repeating bits of the lines the angel supposedly just spoke inside their head and at some point it broke my disbelief, so I'm up to them mixing it up again with the angels actually talking through a vessel.

Disappointed. Extremely average, had alot of potential but just felt flat.
@LoopyYTPlus2 жыл бұрын
Was kinda excited for this until they spoke tbh. I get that it's not this stories fault, ToA is to blame for giving them the ability to speak, but in the expanded media we kind of have the opportunity to choose what aspects of their mythos we apply. Personally I think they were much scarier as silent creatures, when their intentions were unclear. Now that we know they can communicate in English, and that they're explicitly malicious in the way that a pantomime villain is (the whole "evil laugh" thing) it's kind of taken what once was a spine chilling, high concept, force of nature, and turned them into just another mid teir horror villain with a blinking gimmick.
@TheSixthDoctor2 жыл бұрын
If they don't do that, Big Finish are limited to musical stings signaling their approach and to people to whom they communicate telepathically "echoing" what they have just silently told them, which also gets tiresome after a while.
@LoopyYTPlus2 жыл бұрын
@@TheSixthDoctor I don't think stings signalling their approach is such a bad idea, there's a lot you can do on a sound design level to make that really intense, also, the angels don't necessarily need to communicate with the main cast at all, unless it's somehow imperative to a specific plot point that the writer has, but like I say, I feel like when we expose their inner thoughts and reveal that they can communicate in English, it cheapens them. Originally we didn't even know if the angels were conscious in the same way that we were, perhaps their perception of the universe was entirely different to ours, that’s what made them so fascinating to me. They were creatures that had evolved in a way that was completely adverse to our understanding of what evolution is, so there was really no assumptions we could make about them. But now, it's been revealed that they more or less think and perceive reality in the same way we do, they have malicious motivations, they're no longer this impossible, undefinable predator, they're just a really basic horror villain and the gimmick is that they move when you're not looking. They've been humanised and grounded in normality too much, I honestly think that if they were written that way to begin with, they would never have achieved the status that they did in the Who mythos as basically the third most iconic villain in the lineup.
@TheSixthDoctor2 жыл бұрын
@@LoopyYTPlus They did that already. They like to mix it up. Hence the telepathic echo conversations in River Songs's Diary Season 7. And this time, they talk again, like they also did in the Eighth Doctor box sets.
@LoopyYTPlus2 жыл бұрын
@@TheSixthDoctor Fair enough, I'll admit I've got no experience with the Angels in BF. I'm limited to TV and Titan Comics for them. It just appears to me that every time we see the angels we seem to get the babified, simplistic version from ToA and beyond, rather than the abstract "you're way way out of your depth here" version that made them so iconic in Blink. Perhaps people just enjoy the former more and that's why they appear that way so often but personally I just feel disappointed whenever I see it, it feels as though the old "creatures of the abstract" get less and less abstract with every outing.
@DemetriusSorvo2 жыл бұрын
@@LoopyYTPlus There are a bunch of Weeping Angel stories on BF. I highly recommend Fallen Angels on the Classic Doctors New Monsters set.
