I say this as a person who bought the Waza one... they sound exactly the same when not using the "custom mode" switch. But also if you're going to compare two incredibly similar pedals, you need to use a looper to ensure that small differences in performance don't affect the sound.

When I switched out my jcm 800 for an 8u rack as my main head, I got a Line 6 POD to slide in there as well along side a sonic maximizer and a few other personal preference items (yes, I added a karaoke unit, too). The POD does tons of effects, simulates amps, looper, drum machine, etc etc. It's simply amazing all of the shit that thing can do, and it's not even the big boy of Line 6 multi fx racks. The Blues Driver was the first pedal I ever bought in 1995, and between it and the built in chorus, overdrive, and reverb on the Crate combo amp I started off with, I didn't really need any other effects for six or seven years. I'm psyched to have my rack all stacked out exactly how I like it, and when I look back I just can't believe how much time and money I wasted on my old pedal board, pedals, and swapping tubes in and out of the jcm trying to get ye right sound. I was totally missing out on the advances that digital effects and the solid state amps had been making over the 20 years since I'd started playing. I've been workin my new setup now for almost a year, and I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface, but I'm always finding something new and unbelievable that I had no idea about until I stumbled over it.

in my opinion the waza craft is good at low gain below 12oclock, up then 50% gain the sound is more heavy as closed to distorted sound unlike the standard BD2...but each of them has their own colour depends on what sound you are looking for, both are great pedals ❤

Here's what I noticed: They only sound the same when the waza craft bd-2 is in standard mode, when in custom mode, it tends to be less gritty and a little more pristine in the pick attacks and overall articulation. Now personally, I had the opportunity to try these both out and if you try them yourself, you more than likely will hear that the custom mode cleans up better than both the stock bd-2 and standard mode bd-2w

Are there two timecodes in the video you could post that demonstrate this? I thought they sounded completely identical. Equally as full with the gain down, equally as splatty with the gain up, equally as boosty with everything at noon. I'd still get the newer one... you get an alternate circuit with the S/C switch, but even without, the Waza will almost certainly last longer and probably has a better bypass.

I’ve had the original BD-2 for quite some time now. But I decided to go and grab a Waza version just to see for myself. (Kinda hard to tell over KZbin with all that compression that KZbin does to your audio file). In my honest opinion, the Waza is a bit crispier, clearer and more dynamic than the original in “Standard” mode and same thing in custom mode but now with more compression . And of course it has better components and lower noise floor. If I were to choose between the two of them and given that I hadn’t own an original yet, I’d definitely choose the Waza. But since I already own an original, I’d have to say that for me the original would do. But if my original BD-2 breaks or gets lost and I’d have to buy one again, I’d say I’d would spend the extra money for the Waza.
@GrayGhosting
@GrayGhosting 8 жыл бұрын
Given the extremely subtle differences between these two pedals one needs to feed them the same signal for an accurate comparison. You are feeding the BD-2 through the buffer of the BD-2W - it does not have True Bypass. Whether anyone can hear the difference is another story but I would be more comfortable with an identical setup if I was considering paying the premium for the -2W. Even better, cover the units and label them A and B and let people pick the best sounding unit and reveal their identities at the end of the video. With subtle differences like these packaging and marketing are big influences on subjective preferences.

Interesting, thanks! It seemed the WazaCraft version has a broader, warmer midrange, especially at lower gain settings. Also, I think the high end of the standard version is a bit shrill and nasty. That said, at higher gain settings, the standard warmed up more, to a point where there didn't seem to be that much of a difference between the two (except for that nasty high end of the standard). I don't remember you switching the WC version over to the "C" circuit. I wonder what difference that would make? Another great demo, though!

The BD-2w seems to produce a warmer/smoother tone. The benefits depend on many factors: your individual guitar/pedal/amp/room set up...and preference for highs or lows. The BD-2 is analogue, cascaded transistors; a fairly simple circuit. The stock BD-2 New costs around £79 delivered (UK GBP). A New BD-2w costs around £144 delivered...a significant 82% increase for what might be minimal component changes. I opted for a used BD-2 for £54 delivered, that's around 1/3rd the cost of the Waza. Sure I will manage to get a decent sound with the controls on the guitar, pedal and amp.

People who already own a BD-2: "The waza is brighter, I don't like it as much." Everyone else: "They sound exactly the same." Guitar tone psychology is fascinating. Just a whole universe made of tastes, music, money, tones, history, egos and highly misunderstood sciences. I think they sound identical. But the Waza is probably more reliable and has a better bypass, plus it has the S/C switch for a little variety. Also, why doesn't the Waza in this video have a silver screw?

Though not apparent in this clip I'd say the wazza lowers the noise floor overall, so a cleaner signal path plus some other tonal options. Both work though just depends whats more important to you. I prefer less noise and hiss in the line myself generally. Thanks for the demo Pete however as youtube compression hides a lot from the listeners it would have been great to get some personal observations between the two pedals from you.
@danohpsp
@danohpsp 2 жыл бұрын
If you have the Waza connected through the regular pedal, you can't hear a difference because you are using the buffer from the older design in both bypass states. The Waza buffer is one of the major advantages and it's being negated. Especially since the Waza is at the front of the chain! You should take each pedal out of the circuit manually.

Waza definitely gets my vote. its crispy and warm and the option for you to choose standard vs waza is great. Also if you noticed on the back of the Waza pedal that it said that the pedal was inspected in japan. not only are you paying for the components but the pedals that make it to other countries should be 100% perfect if that inspection label is true. I'm definitely going to be purchasing a BD-2W soon! thanks!

WOW! I'm shocked and stunned. REALLY expected the Waza model to knock the standard BD2 into the weeds but it didn't. In fact I think the un-Waza'd pedal was much better to my ear (even with me tinnitus...). Not by a lot, but just enough. And how lucky do I feel now? VERY! I picked up a second-hand BD2 at Andertons a month ago for just under 30 notes! It's a brilliant pedal I've long lusted after and now I am as the Cheshire Cat, grinning ear to ear! And I REALLY was expecting to feel that I should have saved up to be right royally Waza'd. Glad I haven't now.

The Waza is slightly smoother and is a bit thicker sounding but the original has a honkiness and grit that to me makes it better. I play in a two guitar band so I use the BD2 a lot to help me give a mid boost to an already distorted signal to rise in the mix. The Waza seems like it wouldn’t give me enough of that similar edge since it’s a bit smoother than the stick BD2. I don’t think I’m gonna shell out the dough for a Waza since to my ears the BD2 stock still sounds better.

I just bought the Waza Craft Blues Driver in Japan. It was $50 more, but it feels cool getting a "special" Boss pedal after being a fan of their gear for 20 years. The prestige of knowing that little bit of extra care was put into it. The salesman even wiped it down for me before & after I tested it and gently placed it back in its box.

Much like the SD-1w the BD-2w is more compressed, but it seems to help, since there seems to be too much break up on the BD-2.

Well, don’t really see the point of this video. With the BD-2W in the “S” mode, it is designed duplicate the original BD-2. More informative would have been a comparison with the BD-2W in the “C” mode so that we could here the differences.

If he just did the -w pedal in C, people would complain he didn't use it in standard mode to compare if there's any difference in the stock behavior.

At the 1:45 ish mark the waza was soooo much better it was amazing....but as you gained above that it was harder and harder to hear the difference .....till again you fudge around with different tones ,and IMO waza ruled yet again. For the most part it seems more full tone boost and didn't muddy up the low end like the other did at times .... Either sound great to me , guess I'll have to get two 😜👍

If during one of those rig rundown vids [enter rockstar here] had one on his board, then that one would sound better. If you took the Blues driver, slung neon paint on it, renamed it the BluesBrother, advertised it as limited edition and priced it at $349.99, it would sound better than its identical twin.

JIMJAMSC lol. This comment is absolutely spot on. I might add also that if there were than an A/B comparison between the 'BluesBrother' and a cheaper overdrive pedal, then 80% of people commenting who noticed a difference between the pedals would just take that difference as proof that the 'BluesBrother' was superior.

The BD-2W seems to have a overall cleaner sound than the BD-2 on the same settings. Basically it's all up to your personal sound preferences like always 🤷 I personally prefer the BD-2W but most people listening to me playing wouldn't see the difference or even care.

More low mids in the Wasa craft version in S mode. Less highs on the Waza which is probably why always dial in the tone pot on my stock BD2 down to 10 o'clock,, never higher. The Wasa craft version leans in ever slightly towards the SD-1,, A smidgen more mids.. The Waza version sounds better when gain reaches noon or above. I can't really use the stock BD2 above noon.. I always leave the gain knob slightly below noon,, with the tone knob lower it eliminates the fizzy decay on the dirt which I hear at higher gain settings. The stock BD2 works really good as a clean boost/light overdrive but not infront of a clean amp mid scooped amp with gain higher for a dirty blues lead sound.. It simply does not have enough mids.. The SD-1 is al about mids.. (think tubescreamer with a slightly different flavor),, compress a lot and has a big cut on lows,, The boss OD3 sits nicely in between the bd2 and the SD1. Has more marshally mids, maintain bass compared to the sd1 and does not have the "honk" of either the tubescramer or the sd1. Those mid bumped pedals works ok for leads (an even better on an already cooking tube amp) , but try playing a chord though them.. mud..

Normally with the pedals buffer you can notice a little more hi end, your connection is first the waza and then the normal one so the second one is receiving a slightly different signal. Perhaps can be useful to use a switcher instead os daisy chain the pedals?

@@OregonBigfootODA yeah I heard that when he pissed about with the tone compared to the other one when he put it all the way to the left and when he had higher gain it was debatable as to which one was glassier than the other. But for low medium gain I thought the waza was glassier whilst the normal one was flatter.

The Waza has an overall "cleaner" sound, especially on the lower end. However, this pedal is supposed to replicate the honkiness of old tube amps. With that said the base model should be more desirable than the Waza in my opinion.
