So! Let me get this straight. David took all of the Benefits of today’s game and did Not calculate the game/rules of the 80’s that prevented MJ from averaging More than 30/PPG?!?!? Consistent Hand Checking, Arm Bars & Common Fouls that are Flagrant 2’s in this Soft Era!!!! And ya’ll don’t think that that would Even the score with Lebron’s athleticism by trying to Injure him, also?!?!?!? Make Sense! #FanboysWillBeFanboys 👨🏾‍💻

I really like how articulate David West is here. Just look at it from this perspective, I'm not saying guys weren't tough in the 70's, 80"s and 90's because they most certainly were, but was it just because they were "built" different or was the game allowing them to play more physical? Of course guys aren't going to shoot crazy percentages in the paint if you're just allowed to tackle people. Of course it's going to be harder to drive around someone when their hand and are are stuck to you. And he makes a great point about guys' height and weight. That Pacers team was a big and heavy team, yet Lebron physically dominated them. Not finessed them. People use this era against Lebron constantly, like it's his fault, but why not look at all eras with that same critical lens. They didn't have to guard guys like Steph as soon as he crossed half court, they didn't have to worry about 7' guys with guard like abilities, they didn't have to worry about guarding bigs outside the paint, they didn't have to play more complicated defenses. In this era, no matter how big, tall, strong, fast you are, you can most likely score from all 3 levels and have decent handles too. Most teams back then didn't have a guy that could guard guys like Bron, Giannis, or KD. Just because you could hit people out of the air or just be overly physical doesn't mean you can actually defend. Again, not saying they were bad defensively but it's something you have to think about when judging eras or having a GOAT debate.

I'm a magic & Lakers fan when i started playing basketball. When MJ came he made the NBA became global. I don't really like ball hogs but 2 3-peats the hype the swagger the highlights and the shoes, I also want to be like Mike. Strong case vs Kareem being the 🐐. When MJ retired i started to appreciate his greatness even more. Then came LeBron and all the hype and expectations. I never liked him from the start comparing him to be the next MJ i didnt like it at all. and just like MJ he slowly gained my respect with the style of his game (pass first). His freeakish athletisicm, the way he continuously developed his game, his endurance & longetivity through his work ethic & discipline, the level of competition and the way he adapt for 3 decades. The level of scrutiny and hate he had to endure specially today's age of social media. He surpassed it all. You can tell it by his stats, advance metrics, diff accolades, records being broken and great players he surpassed and being able to do it the right way in and out of the court. That's why for me he is the 🐐. And after he is done we will surely miss his greatness.

Since there is less defense, fast pace and more shooting, winning is harder to predict. In the 90s you can hold a 10 lead by slowing the game. Somewhat control the outcome. Now a 20 point lead can vanish in 3-4 minutes. Winning is less about a specific player but more so who gets hotter.

I watched my first NBA games during MJ's first finals, Bulls vs Lakers 1991. At first, I believed what the media said about 90s defense being so tough and physical. At some point, when I rewatched Bulls vs Lakers, I realized that it was a lie. MJ would get fouls for the slightest contact. More importantly, I was quite shocked at how slow and how bad defenses were compared to today's finals games. Defenders were unathletic, and you had so much space to shoot, to go wherever you want.

There is a such thing called illegal defense back then that prevented double teaming or something like that
@bierdlll

@@TheKiddballer21 Back then, if you wanted to double team, it had to be a hard double team, so a defender can't be in no man's land. This prevents zone defense, or multiple layers of defenders, or building a wall to stop players like Giannis and Lebron. Michael Jordan: “If teams were able to play zone defenses, I never would’ve had the career I had.” Kobe Bryant said hand-checking could not stop him, but layered defenses could, which new rules allowed. Kobe Bryant: “But for scorers like myself and Carmelo and KD, the rules from the ’80s can be more beneficial for us, because you have to be played straight up. I don’t care if you hand check us with three hands. If there’s nobody behind you, you’re not going to stop us.”

Dennis Rodman was great strong and knew how to position his body to use it to his advantage. Reason why nobody liked going against Rodman and why he lead the NBA in rebounds for 8 straight years. injuries arent real, the business is more important now than it used to be.. theres only a few real injuries, the science to prove teams are faking injuries is out there but they keep it low to not get fined by the nba.. theirs games guys get told to sit out to be prepared for another game and some games are bet on by refs and team owners so guys have to sit out and dont know why but the bet was for their team to lose.. its real shit going on not just pretty entertainment, theirs more dirty shit going on now than ever because theirs more money involved

It's against the rules to be quite as physical, true, but there is still plenty of contact. And when you get bigger, heavier, stronger, faster dudes bumping you and hitting you, the likelihood of getting injured or needing time off to recuperate increases.

Let's say that you are guarding Kyrie and you put your body in front of him. With his ability, he can just dribble pass by you. Not just Kyrie, most of the G and other players are now too handy and creative with the ball to just get "physical". Not just in the drive and also how they attack the rim. So getting physical is not a good option in today's game.

Lebron played in both though and has dominated in both 2003-2010 2011-23 and is still dominating he’s slowing down with age and defense isn’t great but he can play for spurts your not wrong it is way easier to score now but that’s not bron’s fault guys like harden messed the game up with cheating the rules and causing more foul calls and then there are so many guys who can shoot now then there use to be that includes 80’s 90’s and 2000’s how many great three point shooters can you name from these three era’s off the top of your head you got Larry, Reggie ,kerr, allen, Korver and reddick the point I’m making with that is it’s hard to double team without paying for it now then bk then when there we’re few great 3pt shooters also zone is way less effective in this era then the early 2000’s you couldn’t even play zone in the 90’s also blame the nba not the players they won’t allow big men to even take advantage of there size by posting smaller guys up without calling charges instead of making smaller players pay for switching and being to small which they allowed you to punish smaller guys back in the day hence why they didn’t switch as much back in the 80’s 90’ or early 2000’s also let me address this narrative of hand checking making it harder to score of course it did it’s way easier to keep someone in front of you when your constantly touching them when you take hand checking away you are forced to move your feet and actually have to keep a guy in front of you without touching them with your hands which is way harder than hand checking!!!

I think it's worth noting as well that the talent pool for NBA basketball is expanding. International players are so talented nowadays, and for the past 5 years, the MVP has been someone from outside North America. The Redeem Team was 20 years ago, and we're getting to the point where national rosters from some of the European countries have a decent shot at taking down Team USA. Honestly, I wouldn't be completely shocked if we couldn't take gold in 2024. There are too many good players out there that could get hot and beat us. If the talent pool is larger, the talent at the top has to be better to reach the heights of previous generations. I wonder who the first international player to enter GOAT contention will be? I don't think Jokic will reach that height, but it's not impossible (if he gets like 3 more MVPS and wins 5 straight or something ridiculous). Doncic is an even longer shot right now, but he's got a lot of years ahead of him. Giannis feels like he's capping out and won't be able to get there at this point. But at some point, we will be talking about how a non-American could be the greatest player to ever play the game. It's a weird thought.

Late 2000s early 2010s was a misunderstood era because of the slow transition from deadball era to more shooting like Orlando then even more shooting like James Harden Rockets style. Players back then were probably the biggest the sport ever was but also very athletic just not as good shooters. Even now in 2023 the league is lighter in average weight. People say that era had no good centers but they were all big boys. It was a very physically driven era but had less iso ball and less 3 point shooting.
