My strategy was to place my hives so they get morning sun, but deciduous shade in the afternoon. That way in the winter the leaves fall off and leave them in full sun all day.

Water by its self will not cool as much as water with a breeze. It is the evaporation that cools. When we are Hot we sweet, and moving around in the air, or fanning ourselves will cool us down. You could take a water hose and spray the outside of the hive that will cool the wood down, then cool the inside down. Place a 4’ x 4’ sheet of plywood or some kind of shade on top of the hive. This will cool the hive down. Place patio misters placed above the hive. (3, 5, or 6 feet above the bee hive) This will cool the ambient air around the hive, as well as the air the bees fan into and out of the hive to circulate the air. When water evaporates it cools, when you sweet it cools. Example: if someone is in the state of heat exhaustion, they are dehydrated. (The body is out of water) To cool a person down. Remove them from the heat, into a cool location. Remove what clothes you cam. Cover then with wet towels and give them sips of cool water, and place them in front of a fan. The next step: if you stop sweeting, an ice bath may be needed. Your body is very hot and dry to the touch. You are now in a state of heat stork, this is deadly. David: Try patio misters on low psi. Over the hive. The hottest part of the day, is around 2-3 pm. You can find solar powered water pumps with misters on Amazon. The one below is just an example. Amazon: HAOWIN Portable Misting System with Water Pump, Triangle Bag and Foldable Bucket, DIY Mobile Misting Cooling System for Bike, Motorcycle, Canopy, Tent, Golf Cart, Boat, Camping, Hiking

Good tips David, down here in Al all these tips are a must, so hot down here need as much ventilation as we can get, to help them out a bit, and shade is crucial to. Since it get so hot down here and drys quick after it rains, water stations like bird baths are useful for me. Good video David, appreciate the great info you share! Keep it coming 😎

I’ve got a few questions I don’t believe you’ve addressed previously. 1- How many hives is too many in a bee yard? Is there an over population density to avoid? 2- What other KZbin channels do you recommend? Who else puts out good content? Thanks
@beek
@beek 11 ай бұрын
The number of hives in one yard depends largely on the operational purpose and the available nectar. As far as other KZbin channels, KZbin is flooded with many good beekeeping resources, so If I started naming, I'll miss someone and feel bad, so just try to match your style and type of beekeeping you do.

When it comes to shade, it makes me wonder about setting up 4 vertical risers and then setting up a gardening shade cloth. It still allows a fair amount of sun to come through, but it is noticeably cooler underneath it.

Couldn't you just put inner hive cover over water jar/empty box (instead of a stick)? Then top cover over that.
