I'm the bee inspector for the southeast corner of Utah. A popular vendor of nucs and packages in the region bought their nucs from a different producer for 2024. They were a disaster. Beekeepers all over my area were calling me for help. None of the nucs met the standard for a nuc (2 frames of brood, 2 frames of stores, and an empty frame). A patch of brood the size of a hand was typical. No nuc had any capped honey. Instead, each nuc had what appeared to be a frame of uncapped syrup. 100% of the frames were old broken junk. EFB and chalkbrood were common. Some had no queen. By the time Fall came, none of the nucs I followed was ready for winter.

I totally agree that a package is better for a new beekeeper. A package is the perfect learning tool as you watch it expand. New beekeepers do not know what they are looking at when they purchase a nucleus colony!

In the sun I would think the clear dome would cook bees. IDK One good thing about swarms is they usually have an over Wintered queen. I sent Sheri a tip I wanted to share with you.

Lost my bees already! Weirdest thing, they went in treated, strong and lots of honey. Don’t understand it. Weighing my options for if I want to try again this next year, very discouraging.

Dave I Keep Bees in New Hampshire, We Keep Our Bees in a Bee House. With Windows . We Typically Leave 2 -3Honeysupers for Winter Stores in All Hives . We Have Been Removing the Center Frame of Each Super During Winter To Allow The Concentrated Cluster to Move More Freely Up and Down Between the Honey Supers . What is Your Thought on This .

I know that you have , in the past , posted the recipe for your honey-bee-kind fondant . However , I have a large section of eatable oils that , most of them , are the main ingredients in “ expensive honeybee supplements “ . Do you have any references one could use to “ creat a similar facsimile “ of the “EXPENSIVE STUFF “ that can be “ cooked up “ in one’s kitchen ? I have a major in organic chemistry but there are no references about the synthesis of “ honeybee nutrient supplements “ .
