Being in love with beekeeping is in my opinion, the magic of what bees do, how they survive, the amazing way they reproduce, the way they mature in their life cycle, the way they can be calm and let you care for the hive and then how they can turn and attack without warning, (their way of letting you know this is their hive). I've been keeping for 15 years. Two years in a row I lost 100% of my hives over winter. I'm still doing it. I keep 5 hives now. I don't want anymore. I give hives away and take care of a group of hives for a fundraising group. I'm happy with that. I get more joy out of swarm catching. Then giving away the swarm. I enjoy watching you Dave and Fred, Mr. Ed, Dirt Rooster. I use to watch Mr. Reynolds but he always references Ian so I went there. I learn so much from you and Fred. The Rooster and Mr. Ed, their entertaining and great at removals. Of course Yappy is great. Let me grab them and see how their temperament is!

Coffee time videos are great, thanks for creating them, David! There is more to any vocation than just the mechanics of the physical work. I believe that your coffee time videos help us become better beekeepers. I have many recollections of where I kept working when I didn't want to, or took extra time to make sure things were properly done, or spent more time planning time in the bee yard - all because of your anecdotes from coffee time videos. Thanks for that, and Merry Christmas!

Had 100% survival my first 4 years and I thought beekeeping was easy. Last year 1/22 survived because I hit a little late on my IPM. Honestly this is why I got into beekeeping, I love the challenge. Turned that 1 hive into ten and we are back in business with 280 lbs of honey off the spring Harvest!

Love this video! Really felt like you were speaking directly to my struggles. I used to do beekeeping and loved it. Due to life gave it up for a while, then I was in a car accident and severely injured my back to the point where I can't stand, walk, or lift very well... All of which are common actions for beekeepers. Then by chance, I won a hive w/ bees at a local event. But the traditional way of beekeeping required so much lifting and bending etc I went into a great depression... I had started back up doing the thing I love (Beekeeping) but my body wasn't cooperating. I was so very depressed.... thought I would just have to give up. But then I started thinking... there has to be a way around this issue. I began looking into Accessible Beekeeping and found tips and tricks to make the need for bending and lifting less required and a bit easier. I began to feel empowered and positive about overcoming this challenge and being able to do this thing I love. Then I thought... I bet there are others out there with this same challenge who have either quit beekeeping or have not even started due to the thought that they can't do this hobby due to their disability or limitations. So I set out to dispell this thinking by showing people what I have learned to help them continue to be able to do this great hobby! You have achieved your goal... your channel definitely has heart and helps people. That is my goal also.... I want to one day look back and see comments or letters from people letting me know how I have empowered them to continue/start beekeeping and it has brought them peace of mind and stress relief from their disability.

Had 1 hive abscond in the summer, right after we pulled 2 gallons of honey. Went to put on Winter bee kinds last week and our two remaining hives which just a few weeks ago looked great are now empty, just a few dead bees in the boxes and we did find 1 dead queen. But we are not ready to give up, just want to learn from our mistakes and raise healthy hives in the spring.

Dave, I think you've genuinely expressed that existential element that brings true "heart" to your channel and into your videos. With the deeper thoughts you convey during coffee time, the teacher's gift living within you is a wonderful service to the world. That you are creating quite a catalog of videos about a knowledge many will pursue for the next century, you will have crafted a beautiful legacy, well earned, and tips and tricks about life in general that others will see and understand. I hope you know that you're also being inspirational in such a genuine way that you're able to speak to both young and old. Keep up the labor and thank you for everything you do. I'm overwintering my first two hives this season and keeping my fingers crossed.

Love this video! I needed this so much, David. This is my first year in beekeeping though I’ve been reading and taking classes for a few years. I discovered my last remaining colony (I had two) died with the recent cold snap here in Georgia. I worked so hard all year with mite and SHB control, feeding, etc but still somehow this happened. I’m trying to overcome the heartbreak and not give up, and your video helps so much! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Ha, hi David. Your KZbin channel sure has changed since I started watching. I see you have drifted towards being a philosopher. You know, I like to tell people I've had 5 ten year "careers". Well, that was a while back. I've now added several more years. Before I became a beekeeper the last career was 15 years as an owner of a retail wild bird supply store. I've actually been my own employer/employee for the last 25 years. That's not counting my 5 years as a beekeeper. I may have missed something when I first started watching. I don't remember you're philosophical topics some time back. Some of us never do find "success" as most people see it. But, it can still be your own success. As for beekeeping, those challenges can bee more than most think. It is hard to lose colonies and have to start over. We do learn from those hard challenges for sure. Met you at Hive Life last year but, I'm afraid I won't make the Expo in Louisville this year. Here's to your continued success. Merry Christmas and Happy 2024.

Merry Christmas David and Sheri. I definitely appreciate what you said in this video. I recently (this year) got into beekeeping by agreeing to volunteer at the local Honeyfarm, the owners helped me in obtaining my Apprentice Beekeeper cert. and I'm currently awaiting to set up my hives come spring. I'm also taking your Ultimate Beekeeping course and am hoping to be able to start rearing queens. But one thing at a time, I just want to find my spot in taking care of the girls. Thanks for all you do in passing on your wealth of knowledge and experience.

David, I really enjoyed your talk today and how you progressed and your outlook, ups and downs . I made the #1 mistake and only started with 1 colony to see how the Bees would do before getting into this deeper. This colony is doing great and I am convinced to expand. But the next 2 months will be real test here in SW Kentucky.Your insight is more inspirational than others that are more business. Not sure how you can run a business on inspiration, but if it works for you then job well done. Feel free to assist, with some new colonies I have 200 ac and would like to build to 12 colonies for this season and go from there. Perhaps see you at the Expo here in Kentucky.
