I like the look of this tarp. Looks strong and hard wearing. I like the way your make your shelters so that they appeal and can be achieved by the average person. I have used this type of shelter for years and have been cosy warm on many winter nights.

Great video and sweet idea for a leaf bed. A shallow trench can be dug at the up hill side of the bed and down along the sides to channel water away from the dry leaves. Good advice for when the weather changes during the night. Go ARMY!

So in case anyone missed it Dave does what he does for a living and because he loves it . that is a rare combo he is fortunate that what he loves to do everyday provides massive value for others . He has a right to market his skills which he gives away freely. In return he offers what he believes are great values in gear and training . I believe he is passionate about what he does . We should all strive to actively design are lifestyles to reflect our soul purpose . Dave ...well done

Awesome looking set up. I think I want to try this one out, With an 8x8 oil skinned tarp from from Deer Creek Wilderness outfitters.. When the weather warms up a bit. Were still getting the very low -20 Celsius range here in Yellowknife Canada.. I watch your tarp set up videos alot and so far this is the best one.. Thanks Dave

I don't get why people complain about you promoting products. I personally find it really nice to have tools and such recommended and demonstrated by someone with actual experience rather than just some average Joe consumer or clueless company rep. It also gives an opportunity for people to pay back for all the amazing lessons over the years by putting food on your family's table. There is nothing bad about advertising if it is relevant, honest and interesting.

That walnut dye makes that cover tarp belong there! It looks absolutely natural in color, it's crazy! I think that I'll try making me a walnut colored shirt, just a good and strong sweatshirt hoodie. I'm going to look into other natural dying methods for other natural colors. Thank Dave! Arizona here!

Dave you're the man, keep em comin. Personally, I'm quite common man, but IT'S NICE TO KNOW WHERE TO GO WHEN I'M READY TO UPGRADE. Mad respect to ya zur

Dave...Make that in a 10 x11,and have a center tab(mid ridgeline)with a square pattern,surrounding it (of four,2 on each side of ridgeline),I will buy it. I have owned old oil tarps like that.....and covered 7-8 hundred miles of trails in the Adirondacks with them. Used to be an Adirondack Guide or locally known as Goyd. A bit older than you my friend,just sharin',laughing.

@wildernessoutfitters - Ok thanks - I just didn't know if there was an advantage to this set up verses other shelters that can be configured with a tarp. I carry an Army poncho with me everywhere which is 5'x7' and you're right it's not ideal for a pyramid shelter but it can be done. Thanks for the info and for all you do. I've learned alot from your channel and TV show.

Ever seen or used a Whelan Tent? Basically a lean to type of shelter with sides that splay outward, leaving only one side open to draft or weather. I don't know if anyone still makes those but it would seem a worthwhile purchase if one is to be had made of modern material,

it has those faint lines, looks like camo. I saw that in the anarak too. Is that from the dye collecting at the bottom of the tub? It looks cool,
@BSRadar10013 жыл бұрын
I see this type of shelter being chosen alot by folks but I've always wondered why it's chosen over a setup like a half pyramid which encloses three sides. The half pyramid seems to me to protect you more from the wind and elements and yet still allows you to build a fire in the front for acquiring heat.

an old timer trick to make water repellant clothing and to seal up canvas tenting is to get a pot large enough to soak it in, fill it with enough water to submerge it, and add a quantity of parafin wax to the heated water. Candle wax melts at about 135 degrees. You would basically hand wash the cloth in the waxy hot water until it was well coated. Hang until dry and it will be largely water repellant. I imagine you could use rendered animal fats also. havent tried that

@TJARRIS1 hes got logs in between the leaves and the fire so they dont catch on fire.. and also you dont need a huge fire to keep you warm. instead u need a consistent fire so it can keep a stable temp inside the the shelter.

@wildernessoutfitters Only reason I would use a smaller tarp would be if the tarp was also used as a poncho/pack cover. In that case a smaller tarp might be a lot easier to hike with.

Acom International HO004 HUTCHIE AUSCAM ain't bad. Features studs to clip 2 together for full "tent" or make it into a tube. Reinforced eyelets + nylon webbing straps. Webbing straps on outside of ridge-line so you don't have to run cord through the inside. Pretty well thought out and designed, maybe a bit thin to be called durable.

@TheRebelEye Yuh think?! ... Following Dave's logic, I ate the cost of my recently acquired Marmot 3-Man Limelight tent and purchased a DDtraveller hammock, with ground-bivy capability ... I also purchased the DD (3-Meter) camo tarp, with 19 tie-outs. Yes, a British product, but it is "all in the family" and it was a fair price and they shipped it over-night, for FREE. Even if I was going with a wool blanket and a tarp, I would not skimp on a 7-foot tarp ... get real ! .. 7 '= half-arsed IMO

@warbongkingfu in Canad we have snow remember. Dig that setup down in 2 3 feet of snow, replace the leaves with evergreen bows and get a good fire going. @christianmetalpwns I agree. Even a fire a small as your fist is enough to cook your food, make a brew, or to keep you warm. There's an old Indian saying, 'Indian make small fire, keep warm all night. White man make big fire, keep warm by running to get wood!'
@BruceNitroxpro10 жыл бұрын
I'd need another foot all around, but that's my size speaking. I think you meant long wave radiation, as it's infra-red radiation which is heat... but with no mylar reflecting layer inside the shelter to reflect it down on you and both ends open, there goes your heat. I guess it would keep rain and some wind off of you. I'd have no place to kneel when I got up and at my age, I'd need that for sure. For me, this is close to a pure survival shelter.

I am 6'1" tall ... If I was stuck out in the elements, with this sized tarp (only 7x7), I can only think of one configuration which would be a "sure thing" (for a large person) ... I would use it in the "DEBRIS BURRITO" (leaf sandwich) config ... And ammend it with my Adventure Medical Heat-Sheets 2.0 (2-person) casualty blanket (Always in my BDU pocket) or, one of Dave's "hoodie-style" military (reflective) casualty blankets. Then, I might stand half a chance, up in Ohio.

Dave? Much respect (to be sure ... and gratitude, as well) ... BUT ... Everone has their opinion and here is mine. .. If one is going to commit to a tarp .. to pay for a tarp .. to carry the weight .. IT MIGHT AS WELL BE, AT LEAST, 9 feet (3M) Square. Really ... why not go for some few more ounces and a few more dollars and be assured of adequate coverage and afford many (and more) useful configurations ? ... Why short yourself with a skimpy "compromise" ? Even a 9x12 poly is justified.

@shadowondasun Hey, wildlife's a bitch baby, lol ... you just have to deal with em ; ) But seriously, If it's cold weather you probably don't have much to worry about. If it's warm you could sleep in a nylon tent and probably not freeze. That trick Cody Lundeen or whatever his name was did with the plastic could be an idea if you want to carry plastic. Keep out snakes and wind & let in radiation. Light row crop cover could work. Keep things out, it's very light, kinda strong, lets in 85% of rays
