I'm glad you mentioned the east vs west mentality. A lot of outdoor gear is built for either western open country, or on the eastern trails. Neither of these necessarily require durable gear. Most times I go to select some piece of clothing or a pack and the second I feel it, I immediately say to myself "that will be tore to shreds after one walk." We need tougher gear or more prescribed burns :) - I look forward to the series, as usual the nature of these videos are most practical for those of us in the east.

I think your points of knowing why you're in the woods is important. So many people want a one solution system that does it all but it really can't. Each system is unique to the tasks and reason for the adventure. If you're not hunting big game don't bring stuff to harvest big game. Good stuff with this series!
@fredpickler14825 жыл бұрын
Dave, I am satisfied you are definitely in the Shadow of Nessmuk, in fact some day, a new generation will mention you name before Nessmuk, and in fact any time the subject of "exploring in comfort, not roughing it" comes up, you always are referred to in our conversations. Hope to see you again at SHOT show.

Dave. I love doing just what you are. Hiking with a little hunting and fishing mixed in. I do it in South ga. On some family land. I like to bring my 22 pistol with scope, instead of a rifle. I've taken a lot of small game with it. It's accurate to about 80 yards on a rest or shooting stix. My gear is 18lbs plus pistol and hiking stick. I really love this series

Great new series Dave! Just a tip with that z packs duplex. I thru hiked the Appalachian trail in 2018 with the same tent. Loved it. If you grab 2 small y branches (30"~) and stick it at the base of the front and back of the tent at 45 degrees. Then use the ties outs to stake over top of your branch and then onto the ground it will give you a lot more interior room and repel rain better. Also a good common man ground cloth for under your tent is tyvek house wrap. Durable and repels water/condensation. I got mine free from a job site and cut it to size. Been a follower for years. Really appreciate the effort you put into your series' for us. Thanks!

Hey Dave! I'm really enjoying the new series. I have several pieces of Cuban Fiber gear and I wanted to pass along my experiences with it. When I was setting up the guylines and Line-Locs for the tie outs, I cut much larger pieces than recommended with the tent. I found the extra length really helpful in placing a stake in rocky ground or being able to "Float" the two apex off a ridge-line or nearby trees. Being able to set up one of those entrances without the pole is very convenient when storing gear/pack in the vestibule. As far as durability goes, after 3,000+ miles of trekking, it is holding up just fine. The abrasion of packing/unpacking starts to form wrinkles and a fuzzy texture and gives a look similar to how canvas wears in. I thought this would start to compromise the ability of the material to shed water, however that was not the case. I would carry a small amount of tenacious tape in the repair kit. When the tent is completely taught, while a very minimal risk, it is easy for a falling stick or object to poke a slight hole in the material. Thanks again for everything you put out on KZbin.

Great series. Scouts (from cubs and up) here in Mexico are required to carry a "summit attack" pack (which is pretty much an EDC) and the regular pack, and the ultra light packing mentality is instilled from day one. Granted, it is not for hunting, but still maybe something to look at while doing your research. Cheers and thanks for the videos!

If you were just going after small game, the Henry AR-7 21lr would be good. It breaks down and stores into its stock and comes with 2 8 round magazines. Practice with it before going hunting with it and you should be good 👍. Nice Video Dave, I enjoyed read the Nessmuk book.

Dave, I have to say I am a big fan of this new series. I myself have always tried to do a modern take of Nessmuk which has led to a combination of sustainability gear and ultralight gear. That said, you may well have already considered this but in terms of packs, to go a little lighter I would recommend either the Granite Gear Crown 2 (weighs two lbs and change) or the new version GG Blaze (weighs 3 and change). They are both very durable due to the Robic nylon. They are simple roll top buckets as well. What I like most is the removable lid can be worn as a chest rig and you can also take the waist belt off and attach the lid to make it a butt pack for a day scout.

Started back into hard core primitive skills. Now getting back into gear heavy trips, I'm looking into ultra light gear. I spoiled myself going mininalist. I have a friend who just finished the AT and he has me looking into ultralight gear that can survive those 2195 mile trips etc Perfect combination of practical long term survival gear whilst still being enjoyable to wander around and explore with

Hi Dave, really liking that Scout rifle, wasn't aware of that one. I have a Henry Survival rifle which is only .22 cal. (as everyone knows) hoping that the Scout is still available to the general public, not like your single shot H & R shotgun, that is no longer made and harder to find than hen teeth... that I saw on your earlier videos which you can put adapters for different ammunition. Really appreciate this new series, don't know about that tent you have though, looks like it's made of garbage bags and I know these new tents are very expensive from another video I've seen about them.

That's exactly how I see it. Minus the hunting because I never learned. I'd like to though. Small game and fishing. I used to want a pack system like that but I ended up going with the Ribz chest pack (2018) as my daypack/emergency kit mixed with a gear belt. It's nice to spread the weight out too. That being said, I still have a way to go before it's considered UL. Being in shape is definitely a bonus.

East or West, I feel naked without a good binocular. 7-8 x magnification is fine, but no matter how thick the country is, binos are worth every ounce. Hunting, security, wildlife viewing...too many uses to list all. Today, you can buy a good pacific rim optic for $200 - 300 in 8 x 30 or so that will weigh around 16 ozs. Just the walking these things can save you makes it worth it.

Excellent series. Switched to titanium last year and to down quilt as well. Always looking for lighter gear. Durability has always been the trade off for lightweight. Newer gear is closing the gap. Costs seem to balance out. A really good wool blanket cost the same as a good down quilt. And a durable and lighter weight hunting pack is same price as a Frost river pack. The hardest thing to find is a light weight tent that is waterproof and durable . What tent is that in video?

I am enjoying the series so far. Yes, it's a little different, but I do like the perspective you're taking. It occurs to me that some of the technology available in gear (mostly in fabrics) has really advanced in the last couple of decades ... but I am using pretty much the same stuff I did in the Nineties. If something is going to be lighter, more durable, and more capable ... how can that be bad? Well, it maybe for the wallet ... but some investments are worth making. As you have repeated, if the point is enjoyment, and a lighter load can maximize that ... it's a worthy goal. Also, I do like the shirt-jacket you are wearing in this video. Who makes that and where can it be found?

I have gone through trying to find the lowest weight possible and still have what is going to make any time outdoors anything but, a chore of walking with an anchor on my back. This is not easy to do. I have a small kit of tools, fits in a 5 x 7 x 1 1/2 folding pack. I weighs a lot for its size. do I need it? you bet. Is it really necessary? Probably not.
