References are always a good idea, but knowing how something operates will be incredibly valuable in making designs believable.

You Can find some nice simulator that allows you to see every pieces of a lot of weapon, and how they work. I learn on it how to assemble and diassemble a M1911, a derringer... I love the mecanical process in weapons, perfectly using physics to made those things work. This video was unexpected, but i love it

I once heard (I believe from Sinix) that when drawing guns, or really anything that has a utilitarian purpose, you need to focus on getting just one part right, in the case of a gun it would be the handle and trigger because it has to fit into the hand. The rest Can be whatever shape you want really(if you’re designing the gun yourself). For cars it would be the wheels because they need to contact the ground. Basically it’s the part of tool or object that interacts with reality. It grounds it into something we can relate to.

a trick i picked up when drawing people holding guns is to basically trace a stright line from their eyes to the sights and then you can use that line to draw the upper rail of the rifle, then fill in the bottom parts, this allows you to also change the rifle if you're having a hard time drawing a specific rifle

Hi, mr. Finch i just wanted to share an idea that crossed my mind while watching your videos. My idea is that when you make video tutorials the monday stream could be a character that is know for that specific tutorial, for example cable for guns, beast for fur etc. (Excluding buildings and stuff) Just an idea, love you art😁🤘

This video is an amazing find to me... The fact that you go into detail and mention the parallax that happens with bifocal vision is incredible to me. I was two when I had one of my eyes removed so I have basically no concept of this. I've always known that I probably see things a little differently but it's never been described to me. This tutorial blew my mind. Even watching back I still can't quite grasp what it's like.
