It should be noted that the Georgia Aquarium bought the Whale sharks from Taiwanese fishermen who intended to butcher and sell them on the fish market. So instead of these beautiful creatures being killed and eaten they are being housed at the top aquarium in the world and are the first of their species to be studied in captivity. Also the tank is massive. I don't know if it's the biggest in the world but it is incredibly impressive. Edit: okay wow I didnt realize I had a comment with all these likes. Cool. So backstory is I went on a tour at the aquarium where we got to see the tank from the other side, watch them feed the sharks and sea turtles and what not. They litterally have to paddle out in boats to get in position to feed them. The tank is designed in a way that they have the ability to move in novel patterns and directions, i.e. they cant just swim in a circle all day forever, which is good because it allows them to make decisions and stimulates their minds. They feed them the same thing they would eat in the wild. There are places they can go without public observation. It's very cool and very educational. Aquariums like the Georgia aquarium are basically research labs that use the tourism bit to raise money for science and conservation efforts. They're contributing A LOT more to the environment and these species as a whole through research than if they had bought and released the animals. Plus it raises awareness and educates the public. You can tell people "the whale shark is the biggest fish in the world" and it's just kinda like "okay cool". But when you watch those things swimming above you, 60+ ft long, it inspires you and you grow more complete as a human and you love the Earth more. They're not there for entertainment, they're there for education and research and science and to demonstrate the connection we have with the world. Sure you could buy it back from a fisherman and release it, but that dosent do any good. Itll probably just get caught again. And you cant even blame the fisherman, hes just trying to feed his family with what he has, no ones getting rich killing whale sharks. By keeping them and learning about them, you can help change policy and learn what measures need to be taken to protect them and preserve them in the wild. I dont really think the sharks bumping in to each other is a sign of mistreatment or anything like that... they care deeply about these animals and do everything in their power to make sure they are well taken care of and in a stimulating environment.

Spoken like someone who doesn't know how much things actually cost. It's expensive to take a family out to ocean-dive, let alone take small kids along to do so, assuming they'd even be comfortable diving as well. Aquariums are a much cheaper alternative.
@elizabethmion45954 жыл бұрын
It's a really beautiful sight to see in person. For those wondering, this window is only a small glimpse into this 6.5 million gallon exhibit. The keepers of these rescue whale sharks change the pattern of the water current so that the whale sharks feel and act like they would in an ocean. And no, the glass (which is actually an acrylic resin) won't break. It's almost two feet thick. In this room that have a block of it to show you how thick it really is an talk about the install process.

I see too much dumb people in the comments too lazy for research. It's not like this aquarium went out into the ocean and caught a couple whale sharks and said "Oh let's put these guys in a tank just to make money." They bought these whale sharks so that they wouldn't be butchered for food from the Taiwanese illegal fish market. They saved these whales. And if you guys didn't know it's not like you can take any animal put in captivity back into the ocean. It isn't that simple. They have more than enough room, they're seeing fed and they're protected from being killed by humans. What more could you do for them?? You can't simple release them and they're getting the best of what can be provided for them. Same thing for all the other fish there.

That's a lie, we visited the Georgia Aquarium in 2015 and they said that they only keep them in captivity until they're a specific size and then release them back. They get too big to keep in captivity and they can die due to the stress. The ones in the video aren't fully grown, those are relatively young whale sharks. When we went, there were only 2. I am sure they're going to release those ones soon.

well, we do have the biggest aquarium in the world! and to those who are wondering, they don't "abuse" or "mistreat" the sea animals. i live in atlanta and i go here a lot. most of the creatures there have been rescued, and then they get released back into the wild when they're healthy and well. if they're way too sick or hurt to be on display, they get nursed behind the scenes until they're decent enough to be shown, and then they're released into the wild. same thing with our zoo.

Whale sharks are not supposed to be in aquariums. They thrive in the wild.
@DavidFranklinScience8 жыл бұрын
+Whitney Thiher (MasterGamegirl1) i understand what you were saying, but these whale sharks were rescued from a fish market in taiwan. They would have been eaten. Now, these 4 whale sharks, the only 4 in captivity in the world, promote research and education for people about whale sharks. And its a giant aquarium.
@whitneythiher60218 жыл бұрын
Is there any chance they will be released in the future? It is a good thing that they were rescued and are being used for research, but living in a tank could severely shorten their life spans. It honestly sucks that people hunt and try to eat such rare and beautiful creatures. And just so you know, I am aware of the illegal shark hunting and finning going on. I just hate to see them in a tank. I know it is large, but there are four of them and it just isn't the same as if they were in the wild. Thank you for responding though. I was unaware of the circumstances that lead them there.
@DavidFranklinScience8 жыл бұрын
+Whitney Thiher (MasterGamegirl1) i totally appreciate where you are coming from. Just because there is enough room doesn't mean that the animals are happy. I worked with animals at disney world and they seemed to be bored all of the time. And i doubt that they are planning on releasing them ever...

i’ve been on a behind the scenes tour there and i’ve also went diving in the tank. it’s exceptionally huge and each whale shark has more than enough room. each one is extremely healthy and happy. i got to go up top and get a top side view and i couldn’t see it all still from up top. it wasn’t until i got in that i realized just how big it truly was
I went to this aquarium back in spring I cannot remember the year but I read on the information sheet there they said that these whale sharks were going to be slaughtered in Taiwan so Georgia aquarium save them please do some research people some aquariums actually do a really a good job of taking care of animals they are not in prison.
