Canon EOS ELAN II & IIE (50 & 55) Manual 1: Interface | Camera Layout Buttons, Features, & Functions

Canon's EOS ELAN II (EOS 50 and EOS 55) featured two versions, the standard and the E, which indicated eye-controlled autofocus. The E versions allowed the users to look at an autofocus spot and have the camera focus on the content in that autofocus area. Also, a quick glance to the top left, if the camera's options were set this way, provided depth of field preview. In this way, the camera could be used with great effect by users.

Located my oldest daughter's Elan II. Bought it for her during 1996 when she was in junior high school. It's not damaged. I'll buy film and play with it. I have the EOS R5. Haven't shot film in years. Thank you for making this video.

Thanks for covering this. I came across something similar at a yard sale - I don’t remember if it was this exact model, but I do remember “EOS Elan”. At the time I didn’t feel the need to get a plasticky 90’s 35mm and I don’t like collecting cameras I don’t intend to shoot, so I passed on it. Wondering now if I should have. It was going for a song and in pristine condition in the box, and if I recall a plasticky kit lens.

Thank you! And no. I covered this because I know a lot of people have wanted a video on this camera. And honestly, they're fine and good cameras. That said, you're missing no exciting life experiences shooting something else. The advantage, the only advantage, these have over the EOS 3 is that they're dirt cheap by comparison.

Hello. Great review! I have a simple question, I ordered the body of Ellan II, and on lcd scree there MF sign is blinking, and when I release the shutter button, it doesn’t fires. Is it because is has no lens attached on it? or some issue about battery? Thank you for your time.

I'd give it a try work a lens first, yes. If it doesn't work then it's likely an electronics issue.

Great video! I'm testing mine which I just purchased and the flash isn't firing (I don't have film in it). The lamp lights up for focusing but no flash when I fire. Any ideas ? Do I need to load film in it?

David, I have the IIE, & I'm curious in buying a hotshoe mounted flash what's the best choice between a fairly contemporary one but still allows me to use all the features on it?

Look for a flash from the era that still works and it will be a good match. I don't know enough about newer Canon flashes to know if they're backward compatible.

Hey David, Great video covering an awesome camera. I had found one last year here in India at a very cheap price but had passed on it since I had already bought some other cameras and lenses to test then. However, I found a pristine Elan 7E and bought it last week. Turned out a pretty expensive purchase given that autofocus SLRs tend to be overlooked in favor of the classic ones and hence cost less, but one worth it since it has all the features I have been wanting to play around with. I am testing it now with a roll of Lomography Color Negative 400. I was wondering if you have used an Elan 7E. It would be great if you could make a video on it. Cheers!

I have this camera and I wonder is there a way to switch it off (totally) other than taking out the battery - l know you can put it to L but you still get the LCD to show the film count. So is there a way to tally switch off the LCD so to preserve battery?

Nope. The battery drains slowly, but it does still drain, you're correct. I prefer removing batteries in cameras like these because I don't like wasting batteries that could easily end up not being properly recycled.

Nice! the only difference is that the E has eye focus.

I have yet to figure out, what the difference is between a 50 and a 55. Is it just the eye focus?

Both are the same, except the 55 has programmable eye focus, panorama mode (I'm surprised the Elan IIE doesn't have it), and the quartz date panel.

The quartz date function is useless now, as it maxes out at 2018 before resetting to 1994.

Hello does this camera have a diopter?

Built in, I don't think so. If yes, there will be a dial next to the eyepiece. Canon used to sell diopters that would fit on where the eyecup is.

Eye control focusing and there is not a shutter cable release!? I think Canon was a little lost in space. How do use the Bulb exposure without a cable release? The Eos 100 is the same. Finally a shutter release is not only for professional use.

There's a remote, but not a traditional cable release. Canon made a proprietary (of course they did) remote that plugs into the camera's remote port.

Be ready to pay an arm and a leg just to get the plastic latch replaced. Back in 2001, I paid $72 to get my EOS 50 latch fixed.
