David is consistently reliable in tackling everyday things no one else bothers to explain clearly and concisely. The more I see him exploring Mac in more recent videos the more convinced I become that Apple makes things unnecessarily complicated -- perhaps because they have a habit of wanting to draw people into their 'eco-universe' -- which is not 'eco' at all. The recent shift to RISC architecture (which some of us remember from the UK in the 1980s) and ARM chips certainly have a positive ecological impact but the corporate thinking is still stuck in luxury thinking and excessive profits. Microsoft is just as bad and late to the party with ARM licence architecture. Both companies really need to innovate on the customer interaction/ease of use front -- or look back to when computing was fun and educational with big business needs having separate divisions. Switch on horrid Windows 11 or lazy Ventura and there is nothing alluring to stimulate young minds to communicate with the world in a linear way as was once the case.We all went on a journey and eventually would encounter tools for business. Now it is straight to the business world with flat graphics, poor colour nuance and accessibility aids are severe and grudging. Those of us who work in the medical and special education fields used to be able to feel assured that there was interest. Now it is missing and might explain why bespoke Linux systems and sub-systems are rapidly filling the yawning chasm.

Hi, Stephen. You are absolutely correct, Apple do want to tie you into their ecosystem and certain functions that should really be straight forward, quite often aren’t. I also agree that they do treat their products like luxury items and price them accordingly, maybe even more so with their switch to RISC/ARM. BTW, I remember the 80s very well :) My opinion of all Apple products is that they are overpriced. However, for the best part they are generally made very well and work very well. Although, I’m still not convinced that their craftsmanship and functionality are justification for the prices. In certain instances, Mac computers are a great choice. After over 30 years mainly on Windows, one of the main applications that I was using, my video editing software, wasn’t being updated to take account of the latest functions on Intel CPUs. At this point I not only decided to change editing software but also decided to change hardware platform and OS. The move to Mac and DaVinci Resolve has been one of the best decisions I’ve made as far as my productivity is concerned. For me personally, as I make money from the use of my equipment, I stomach the high prices that Apple charge for their computers. That said, I’ll never agree that their prices are justified. One other reason for switching to Apple Silicon (RISC/ARM) was power efficiency. It’s only after using an Apple Silicon Mac that you realise the massive disparity between their power usage and that of a similarly performing X86/CISC computer. For the same and even better processing performance, the Apple Silicon Macs are massively way more power efficient. For a task that my Mac PC (MacBook) can perform using about 50 watts per hour, my previous Windows desktop PC was using around 400 watts. For me personally, I’m actually OK with paying more for any electronic product if it helps toward reducing the strain on out planet. Plus, from what I understand, Apple are also big on sustainability and re-use and recycle materials for most of their products. As for their tablets and phones. These are definitely their most overpriced items and by a high margin. Unfortunately for me, the iPad Pro is just amazing and is my most used electronic device. I’d probably go so far as to say that the iPad has been one of the best electronic items I’ve ever had. My only warning about buying any Apple product is this. If you really do like the Apple product you buy, and you probably will, Apple will basically own you :) Cheers, Dave.

I tried this method and it still didn’t work. However, after doing some research what I ended up doing was use a powered usb hub for the power of course, connect the T7 to the usb hub, and then connect the usb hub to the lightning adapter and it worked! This also worked on the SanDisk SSD Hope this helps anyone!

Hi. Are you using the same adapter and using the extra power? If not, it may be that iPhone doesn’t have enough power on its own to power the external drive. Thanks to you I knew the exact products I needed to buy, and I now have a simple way to move media off my phone, something that would take me multiple steps and too often wasted time & annoyance at download mishaps. And no icloud or pc or internet access needed, love that. Just for others to know as I was wondering and hoping it would work the same, but I purchased the newer 2022 rugged T7 shield and it works just the same as the 2020 t7 shield you have in your video. You can't transfer directly from the Apple photo library. For whatever reason, Apple don't allow you to do that. I have my photos and videos stored in a different folder the phone so I can move them.

It's my understanding that the photos and videos in the Photos app on an iphone reside on the cloud with a low rez version on the phone. When one clicks on this low rez photo or video, the iphone starts downloading the high rez version from the cloud fairly quickly and seamlessly. My point being, that to copy, say a top quality 4K video from the iphone to the external hard drive, the phone will need to connect via wifi to the cloud, then transfer a copy of the video file to the hard drive. Does that all sound correct?

Hi, Keith. No, the iPhone has issues with partitions. I use partitioned USB flash drives and SSDs for booting into recovery software on my Windows machines. The first partition is FAT32 for the boot and recovery software and the second partition is ExFAT for storage data. It’ll see the second partition but not the first. It also completely fails with other drives I have that are multi partitioned. It may see multi partitions that use APFS or other typical Mac formats, but that’s going to be very restrictive for other hardware platforms that won’t recognise those formats. The whole disk management and file browsing abilities of iOS and iPadOS are very poor at best and next to useless at worst. Cheers, Dave.

No. This kind of backing up is only limited to what the file browser gives you access to, which isn’t much to be honest. For a full backup you’ll have to connect to a computer and backup via iTunes or whatever Apple call the backup software these days, or do a full backup to the iCloud but you’ll have to have the space. Hi. Unfortunately, Apple don't give you access directly to your photos and videos that were shot with the Apple camera app, so no, you cant copy and save them directly to an external drive. However, if you use a different camera app that allows you to save your photos and videos into a folder in your main drive space, then yes, you can copy and save those ones directly to an external drive. my “adventure” with your example configuration went not smooth at all: is it possible that some additional step (i.e. exFAT formatting) need be taken? samsung writes its SSD T7 is MAC compatible; but is it also IOS compatible? Once connected, the SSD didn’t even lit the led, no matter how many times we connected and detached it. So we went back to the apple store where I bought the lightning adapter and asked for a change. Connecting the SSD to a spare lightning adapter (and the iphone of my friend) lit the led indicator on, so we were given a new lightning to usb3 adapter. But the new adapter again did NOT lit the led indicator on the SSD. The shop assistant then checked the following: - what filesystem the SSD was formatted: I can’t say if he reformatted it, because the check he performed with a shop laptop took little time I can't but thank the shop assistant, also considered that I had purchased only the adapter from the store. Lastly, as a side note, in your video I would also have appreciated the show of the reverse operation: copying files from iphone to SSD.

You just pull the drive out. I know this is very disconcerting, or at least it is to me, but there is no disconnect, eject or unmount function from within the Apple file manager. The is is how Apple have designed the function. It’s really odd because even Android has an unmount function within its basic file browser and it will complain if you just pull out a drive without unmounting, just as Windows and MacOS will. Although, I would have thought that this would only apply when the storage device isn't being written to. That said, even on an OS where you need to initiate an unmount, if you accidentally remove a storage device while it's being written to, you're fairly much screwed anyway if it corrupts data. That said, I would much prefer an unmount option on these portable Apple devices. Cheers, Dave.

@@chickenfoundation9323 If the the drive was already ExFAT and the phone can’t see it, it’s likely a power issue ☹ iPhones are quite terrible for power delivery and quite often will need a Lightning to USB adapter than will also allow you to add extra power.
