I bought it to try out. My wife tested it for me and she wouldn’t give it back. I thought the price was too much originally but after seeing how it works with the MacBook Pro it’s hard to return it. I ordered myself a vesa mount one and I will get mine in July. So I went from not wanting to spend the 1600 to buying two, but only if the mini led one isn’t announced at WWDC.

I feel you, man. I went from someone who was not wanting to buy to who is almost buying the second. I mean, it's pricey for a display, but it's still a nice display if you have a Macbook and the speakers, an embedded power supply for Mac, and its integration with Apple's ecosystem... I'll go to the second round. lol

This is a really useful review, especially coming from a pro user who’s done work with it. I keep my gear as long as you do (your example of the old Thunderbolt Monitor), so for me, the build quality and probable long life, seem to make it a good value for me.

I have not bought one yet, but had thought hard about which stand option I’d get. VESA was the only one that made sense, since I have an articulating arm to mount it on and gave me the most options for placement. For some reason, I thought that would be the thing you’d mention as the regret!

I got a cheap viewsonic monitor for 800 bucks that came with a huge stand, adjustable in about every direction, plus the monitor is based on VESA, so when I wanted to mount my monitor on my wall I was able to throw it right onto the wall mount. The bezel is very thin and no logos anywhere on the front of the screen. I only takes about 2-3 seconds to turn on and for the macbook screen to transfer, much better deal in my opinion. I have my old windows computer plugged into the same monitor, so if I ever need to switch ecosystems, it takes less than 30 seconds. The monitor is the vp3268 4K. Throw in an MX master 3 and mx keys and you only need one mouse and keyboard for both systems.

Just ordered mine, with the tilt, I edit video and need the color accuracy, I’m currently using a 27” iMac and just ordered the Mac Studio Ultra and I would hate to give up the 5k display. The 5k LG is slightly less expensive but a lot less accurate and the build quality is no where as good. And honestly I could care less about the web cam.

You can buy vesa mount for non-vesa monitors. Some non-vesa models are bulky, little bit of research needed to find the perfect one. The monitor stand would awkwardly hang, probably removable.

Yeah man, I think I will be purchasing that this year. I’ve been using two separate 27 inch NEC multi sync displays with the proprietary color calibration puck/software. But since purchasing the M1 Max it doesn’t recognize the calibration software anymore. And seeing as I’m a commercial photographer - calibration is important. Ha. I can’t complain though - I’ve had them for over a decade. Those things were at least $1500 a piece when I bought them plus the calibration software so they were pricey just like - this but worth it for how long they’ve lasted. Agree with you on the VESA mount. I think that is the version I will get. I currently have a separate 24 inch monitor permanently attached to a VESA mount that i use for my tethering set up - but I would like to eventually switch over to using one of these for that as well.
@DavidManningvlog
@DavidManningvlog 2 жыл бұрын
For your setup, buying three of these might be a kick to the wallet, but I think you'll especially be stoked when shooting tethered. I'll put out an update if the calibration shifts over time, but man right out of the box it was almost perfectly nailed!
@Americanomondays
@Americanomondays 2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidManningvlog Ha...oh yeah, I definitely won't' be buying 3 at once. I only bought the 24" monitor years later for my tethering system (a cheap one for on set) so it would be a gradual purchase. And honestly...who knows. We're closing on our first home in a few weeks and WOW we are having to put up way more than I thoughts...so Apple Monitor may have to wait.

The price kept me from pulling the trigger last year when it came out. I purchased a Samsung 34" ultra wide instead. EVERY TIME I went to use my Mac Studio I had to mess around and wait for the monitor to come on. The monitor was nice, but there were times where I knew I wanted a cleaner desk set up. I really wanted to hate this monitor, but after I purchased it, I quickly forgot that I paid 1599 plus the extra 400 for the stand. I love that IT JUST WORKS. I also love that the speakers are a decent quality, great screen, and a web cam all in one. I also love that when I use my MBP and my I pad that I can have all three of them on my desk and they can charge via the monitor.

I ordered the ASD(VESA mount) the day after it was introduced, due to arrive in 2-3 weeks, and since then I've watched every single video I can find on critiques/comparisons. I've been staring at a 2014 iMac w/Retina for the past 8 years, and I'm afraid if I go any less than 5K, I'll regret it for the next 10 years (estimated life of the ASD, and me), I'll forget the obscene price in a year or two. I had been looking at the BenQ SW's, the Dells, and even a 2K Asus Pro Art (which supposedly handles the font scaling much better than a 4K, and is less that $400). Still, I've looked at the ASD and several 4K monitors at my local Bestbuy, and I won't be happy with a 4K. Order is not cancelled yet!
@DavidManningvlog
@DavidManningvlog 2 жыл бұрын
I would keep the order Botch! If scaling is important to you, this thing does it perfectly! I'm still a little bummed I didn't get the VESA mount, but I don't really have a need for it now. Just if I wanted to get two displays later and mount them side by side, the VESA would be a better option. Overall though, super stoked on this display👍

Just watched your video and thought I should share the process and actual costs of the VESA Mount upgrade installation at Apple from the standard tilt stand. IF it wasn't shared in one of the comments already, I had my Standard Tilt Apple Studio Display converted (Apple calls it "upgraded") to a VESA mount which is what I needed. Unfortunately VESA mount studio displays are on backorder until September but I needed it urgently for my work. So I was lucky to pick one up out of town while traveling at a Best Buy (only 1 was available within 150 miles from San Diego, although 2 days prior i kept stalling to purchase one in San Diego as the majority of Best Buy stores in the county had the standard display in stock, but literally sold out the next day!), and drove it back home with me to bring in to Apple. The costs are: $119 - VESA Mount Upgrade Kit $79 - Hardware Repair - Level 1 $79 - Upgrade Fee $277 Sub Total (tax not included) $294 TOTAL with (CA Sales Tax - San Diego) My local apple store manager in San Diego said I am the first customer to inquire about this upgrade since its release and start the process. The apple genius tech who helped me didn't even know how to start the work order to begin with. Took a phone call to customer service, then transferred to the actual Apple store which gave me the wrong information about ordering the part on my own online and bringing it in back to the Apple store for repair and then physically driving to the store to wait another 30 mins with the manager to figure how to find the part in their system. It was placed as a work authorization upgrade and to arrive in 3-5 days. It took a full 5 days to get my VESA Mount replaced. The tech said the upgrade labor took 30 mins but the delay was waiting 4 days to get the specific tool screw bit needed that they never received surprisingly since the Apple Studio Display release. The standard tilt stand that was removed had 6-8 screws lined up in a row with a specific screw bit needed. (looked like a 6 curved pointed star). Although it cost an extra $294, the VESA Mount was worth it for the urgency of my editing work and business. I have a bad back and bad ulnar nerve entrapment pain in my right hand.. so ALL ergonomics & ergodynamics measurements had to be precise. IT is SOLID and sexy attached to my Innovative 7500 flexmount (that i found brand new on Offer-Up for $50 with the heavy duty wall mount base in white. Hope this helps the community for anyone who is curious about the upgrade to VESA mount upgrade process and costs at your local Apple Store. 😀

If they knocked off say $400 and included the height-adjustable stand i'd say it was more reasonable. But as it stands, it's just too expensive. It costs more than my entire 2019 imac which carries the same display, but is also a computer. It costs about the same as my brand new M1 max mac studio. Crazy and just brazen how they missed the mark with the pricing on this thing.

Compared to those offerings for pro photographic work, this monitor seems to be quite a fair price. And for video editing, this looks like a slam-dunk.

I think the VESA mount would've been a deal breaker for me. I've got a dual arm running my 32" 4k monitor and an HD monitor vertically and have loads of spare space on my desk.

Luckily, the VESA mount option isn't extra from Apple. So for the same $1,599 you can choose that option. Of course, then you have to buy a VESA arm if you don't already have one. But I still wish I would have gone for that option😐

Thanks, totally agree. And just wish the VESA mount Studio Display was cheaper than the tilty version! (But think it’s like that for a reason).

Ok. I got a little bit irked by this review. You keep addressing people who criticize things about the display as haters? Really? That’s it? But you will agree that the camera is “meh” and that the $400 height adjustment stand is ridiculous. Doesn’t that make you a hater as well? I’ll tell you what, I have no issue with the price. In fact I wanted to buy two of those but three things didn’t work for me: 1) no other audiovisual connectors, such as HDMI or Display Port in case I wanted to connect another devise to it without dongles; 2) the camera is not meh: the camera is crap. Not even the software update worked, it’s still terrible. There’s no excuse; 3) the damn power cable being fixed and not detachable is a disaster: suppose a dog chews through it or it just strips from rubbing against the wall or desk. Do you see the issue with that as well, or am I a hater? The 5k aspect of it and the aluminum construction are superb. The speaker I can’t say I care much about the feature. But to call people, who can’t support the lackluster features of the monitor, haters is just… I don’t know, a spurious argument. Take care.

I DO NOT LIKE how Apple reams customers on pricing. It is so wrong. And that is why I do not purchase their products. I'm quite happy with my LG 32BN88U-B 4k monitor that comes with its unique stand that has the best pivot/extend/swivel/height/tilt options in a sleek design and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg and a couple of feet. LOL

Everyone talks about how good this display is, as if no one sees problems with back lighting in the lower corners. I don't think it's acceptable for an Apple product at this price. The same can be said about the displays of the new MacBook Pro laptops, which have such a strong shadows around the edges of the screen that it seems as if these displays were made 25 years ago. I think that Apple absolutely does not care about the consumers if he allows such punctures in quality. And the prices are constantly growing exponentially. Again and again Apple deliberately releases a product with problems, but no one seems to care

You didn’t need the 5k. A 4k 27in is still plenty dense and you could have gotten a way nicer panel for less. As for car parts 99% of the parts aren’t made in house so just figure out the OEM and order those it will be the same as a factory part without the cost

I checked out a lot of 4k displays before picking this one up and man, they just don't look this good! Totally could have saved a few bucks, but I'm super pumped on this thing. And totally agree to MOST car parts, but there's some that Mercedes just does better🤷‍♂️
@harryseaward3408
@harryseaward3408 2 жыл бұрын
No, because it’s not about density. At 218 PPI it’s already dense enough that most people can't readily to discern the individual pixels anymore. It’s about native 2X resolution, which means all of those pixels fall exactly on grid, so no display scaling is required like there is at 4k. For people who need sharpness and precision that’s important.

You have a mercedes and apple device all goes well, you gaught it as a social status and it is just made to piss of the less wealthy people. And if you can afford a mercedes Apple stuff is cheap then. Also if I am a customer and I see that you drive on Mercedes and got Apple device I will just think "he is just 10x more expensive as photographer than others.

The difference between 4k and 5k is more than you think. Lookup issues that 4k monitors have with scaling compared to 5k monitors. Again though, for lots of people that won't matter, but if your job is to edit images/videos, the scaling issue for sure comes into play👍
