The final fight between Sang-Woo and Gi-Hun was legit one of the more realistic ones I have seen in cinema. Normally, fights are designed to be visually appealing, but I really like the approach they took with this one. The fight was primal, feral, and barbaric. The manner in which Sang-Woo and Gi-Hun fight adds rawness and realism to the scene. You could literally feel the murderous intent that the two men had for each other.

It sounds like you guys watched it with the "English CC" subtitles instead of the actual English subs. Netflix set "English CC" as the default subs with Korean audio for some reason. So, if you watch Squid Game again, check your subtitles and make sure it's set to "English" and not "English CC." I'm getting tired of people bashing the translation when the actual translation was fine (I'm Korean). What people have been criticizing are the dubtitles (closed captions for the English dub), which aren't supposed to go with the Korean audio in the first place.

I think it was supposed to give you insight on the guards and the internal workings of the game. The guards were also regular people that chose this, had jobs and lives outside of Squid Game. They weren't like storm troopers that were kidnapped and brainwashed since birth. The storyline also showed that the front man didn't care about what they were doing, he just cared that they were giving the doctor an unfair advantage. I think there's a fan theory out there that the guards were people that chose the red card when they played with Gong Yoo. Like to commit these atrocities (murdering people in cold blood) they were being offered crazy money too.

Thanks for talking about this! Great to hear you guys' perspective. I feel like what sets Squid Game apart in the death game genre is how much it's grounded in reality. Most other shows either have little connection to the outside world so the 'game master' has complete control (Alice in Borderland), or they create a reality where the games are an accepted part of society (Battle Royale). Squid Game on the other hand firmly grounds the games in the real world. The policeman character stood out to me as an important bridge between society and the games, firstly because his initial involvement shows the events affect the real world (unlike in a lot of other death games), and he pulls back the curtain so we can see the what's happening behind the scenes (which again is uncommon in this genre).

I was watching a Netflix interview them on this movie. The creative director did a lot behind the movie too. The costume and set design, which is a lot of the visuals, was pretty much all her. The lady who played Sae Byeok worked as a model before she sent in an audition tape for the role. I don't know if you've seen Haunting of Hill House or Bly Manor (my personal favorites), but it was similar with Victoria Pedretti. I think Haunting of Hill House was her first acting gig that just blew up. The director also said it was hard getting foreign actors (which probably explains some of the scenes near the last episodes feeling like a video game cut scene dialogue), but he got lucky with the guy who played Ali. He already lived in Korea, is a good actor (especially with emotions), and is fluent in the language.

The idea of Capitalism is not bad. The bad thing is the desire to hoard wealth, using money only for yourself, and not helping those in need when you can. And the environmental effects of mass consumerism, which happens outside of capitalism. The need to flaunt wealth because you couldn’t before and your ego was hurt and not helping others because others in your position now didn’t do the same. It’s all part of human nature, what we are not taught, and what we experience as we grow older. The theory or scarcity, that nothing is enough, and you have to keep collecting and getting more. That if you don’t stand at the top, somebody else does, and the fear or notion that they have power over you.

The main character does have a lot of pride, but I also get why he punched the step dad. Instead of the stepdad saying "these are for your bills, please leave us alone" it kind of felt like he was bribing the main character to not see his family. And he did have a gambling addiction which also affected his behavior. It also goes to show, even if you're given that much money, it won't change your financial behavior. At least he gave that money to Sang Woo's mom though. I think the main character does have more morals than some of the other characters, but he still does some slimy things. His character might feel like stealing a credit card isn't as bad as killing, which is technically right... but he didn't seem to feel bad about stealing his mom's credit card lol.

'oh' il-nam and 'oh' mal-sook. it's possible that il-nam left his family for some purpose and left his son gi-hoon to his sister mal-sook. or il-nam is gi-hoon's uncle and maybe il-nam's son could come out as a new character in season2. or frontman could be il-nam's son which makes gi-hoon and the frontman cousins. the detailed set of the neighborhood for marbles game in the gganbu episode could work as some trigger into having flashbacks of their childhood. just some theories.

In my opinion they still didn't have the freedom to choose to come back to the games again. It was the illusion of freedom and they were still getting exploited for these games. The gamemakers, VIPS, everyone that was controlling these games are the REAL villians. They didn't need to make them play these games, they couldve given them the money. Whenever Hollywood remakes something from abroad, more often than not, so much nuance is lost, in terms of cultural norms, and language. There are things that work within a North American context, which don’t translate to another audience, and vice-versa. I’m not all that well-versed in ‘foreign’ cinema, but I don’t know of many Hollywood films/shows being remade for different overseas audiences (though that might have to do with monocultural vs multicultural identities). Something that was missed in translation (and probably, obviously the dub) was Ali calling Sangwoo "seongsaenim" and "hyung." The English language doesn't have a formal way of speaking or a hierarchy way of speaking, but hearing how highly Ali thought and trusted of Sangwoo to only get backstabbed, I felt so bad for him. I feel like if I wasn't enough Kpop trash, I would've completely missed this and I would've thought his character was just stupid when really he had a lot of trust in Sangwoo. Even though that's a really small thing, that's something that can't get translated very well into American films. It's that and the highly different cultures where a lot of American remakes of Asian films are terrible. Edit to add: Mariel not letting David win with him choosing to kill himself over her lol

There most certainly is a formal way of speaking in English. There just isn't a good direct translation that would give you the same meaning or vibe. @printhao20393 жыл бұрын
@@blissfool I would say that's more of a polite way of speaking, but in comparison to Korean, English doesn't have anything equivalent to formal and "banmal" way of speaking. @@printhao2039 Korea is definitely more strict with banmal and jondetmal. But saying no one is going to get mad if you don't use sir/ma'am is bit much. My brother and I watched episode one with our mom who just started watching. She pointed out during the green light/red light game, when they said "eliminated", the word they were saying translated more closely to "be killed." I had trouble finding the word because my Korean spelling is bad, but it was something along that. I don't think the subs picked it up, but after a lot of the players were killed during the first game, the lady over the speakers seemed emphasis the word "eliminate"/"killed" compared to the first few times before they started the game. As if she was saying, "in case I wasn't clear" or "this is what I meant by 'eliminated.'" Compared to the subbed or dubbed version where the announcer over the speakers seems to say the same thing repeatedly. The scene plays out the same way mostly (it's just a small thing) but I feel for those that can't watch with subtitles

I’m sure someone probably already mentioned this, but the present Gi-hun gives to his daughter is very foreshadowing. The box with the bow is very reminiscent of the “casket” they use, the gun (they shoot the losers), and the gun is a lighter (they cremate the bodies).
@user-ot2nh8qb7d3 жыл бұрын
There were a lot great use of symbolism and foreshadowing. Which are good literary devices and a hallmark of great writing and story-telling. These were also employed on top of a layered social commentary about democracy, addiction, debt, classism, and capitalism. Symbolism and foreshadowing are commonly used in good Korean cinema. They make great use of it. Especially, when they don’t have an endless big budget like Hollywood does at their disposal. So they rely more on creativity and traditional story-telling. Which is irreplaceable and is equally entertaining, if not more so. The Korean film industry is still in its infancy and still developing. They are getting better and better at honing their craft. Gi-hun swore on his mother’s life after being freed by Sae-byeok. After winning the game and coming home with all the prize money, only to discover that his mother had already passed away. Suddenly, all the money in the world was meaningless. It couldn’t save his mother nor bring her back to life. Which was one of the important reasons why he did all that in the first place. Very poetic. Even the old man stated early on that he was dying from an inoperable brain tumour. Which was what finally killed him in the end, not dying in the games from being shot in the head. That was a clue and a foreshadow that he was still alive and the mastermind behind the entire games.

I think as much of a cliche plot/summary squid game has, the combination of amazing cinematography, realistic scenes + ACTING, and creative design makes the series exceptionally more appealing and attractive. its easily comparable to alice in borderland and hunger games in terms of plot, but dassit🤷🏻♀️ squid game has much more to offer when it comes to visuals and acting. I give mad props to the person responsible for the visual design of the production cuz i believe she really saved 40-50% of the show. in thriller film/dramas that consist a lot of violence, goriness, and darkness, 99% of the time the production team will just use colors/themes/background etc that pertain to just that. Squid game on the other hand used heavy contrast by putting in aspects that are associated with children (traditional korean children games and the “playground”), youthful energy/tranquility (pastel colors), and entertainment/amusement (colorful lights, giant piggy bank, giant doll) in a THRILLER series... i think that was major clever. This is in addition to the brilliant acting and other artistic designs/productions (costume and sound)!!! Anyway... squid game was a1 and the cast/production crew involved were even more so👏👏👏

I haven't watched Squid Game and I'm fine with spoilers. What matters to me is execution.

I wouldn't mind an entire podcast of you two praising Squid Game, the show is that good. You could put that "buzzed" episode on Patreon, for example.

“I saw the Devil” is my top three favorite Korean Films. Oh and “The Man Who Came Out of Nowhere.”

Squid Game reminded of Kaiji. For people who watch a lot of foreign films, Squid Game isn't necessarily something ground breaking. Since it was made highly accessible on Netflix it was available to people who probably haven't seen a lot of foreign stuff which is part of the massive popularity.

One more thing. I was heartbroken about Ali (probably) the most because he had an empathetic way about him and wanting to believe the best in others. He was taken advantage of and it cost him his life. It’s not talked about enough how kind people are taken advantage of in general. I have many more thoughts, including about Gi-hun but it can wait for next time ☺️

As a late squid game watcher, that frontman reveal caught me off guard. Some plots were spoiled (thanks to memes), but that part did not get spoiled. I guess the reason is the same thing you guys explained. I know that actor is a big deal, so it was a shock, unlike people who rarely watch Korean movies, so maybe it did not get that much exposure. The same thing happened when I saw Tony Leung in Shangchi and Mads Mikkelsen in Doctor Strange. Marvel brought the big guns but most people do not realize who they are.

Oh my God. ED thanks you for info. I didn't pay attention to the death of the characters. Wow, brilliant plot indeed

Him not getting on the plane was disappointing but super true to the character. In the beginning when he’s withdrawing money from his mom’s card and the pin is his daughters birthday, he tells his friend “my mom cares more for my daughter than I do” or something like that

If I could change one thing it would be the old man reveal. The weight of episode 6 was undercut by the reveal and I felt like it didn't add much to the show.
