Here is an autumn, fall, landscape painting in oil pastels. I decided to create an impressionist mixed media artwork and use watercolor as my first layer. Hope this cozy art vlog from my studio will inspire you to paint with me because art is good for the soul. If you like to see bits of an artist’s life subscribe and share! Wow! Always been a watercolourist but was introduced to oil pastels at my community art classes. whilst I loved them I somehow never got to developing my skills. Most other people preferred ordinary pastels so I passed at that time. now in the winter you have persuaded me to move back to oil pastels especially with your stunning piece with water colours. Shall be watching out for your latest demo.s. C

I think your painting is lovely. I was surprised to hear you say that you didn't know much about painting with watercolor because just your watercolor layer looked amazing. I use watercolor and I just bought some oil pastels that I'm going to try to incorporate into my watercolor paintings. Thank you for your video. It was very helpful.

I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one to get overwhelmed while trying to paint fall foliage. I will definitely try to simplify my composition too - thank you for the tip and as always, the inspiration to create. Have a great weekend. ❤❤❤

Syndia - this was a great video! I so appreciate that you share your internal process and your challenge with getting frustrated, impatient and rushing through because I relate to that so much to the point that it frequently keeps me from starting anything. I'm definitely going to try the water color pencils, water color underlayer and oil pastel now. I loved your result - stunning!

When I get to that dreaded “middle area” where I think, oh, this is headed for the trash, where else could it possibly go from here…I set it aside and work on something. When I come back to it, maybe the next, or few days, I see the possibilities and can move on. This kind of works for me 😊 your painting looks great!

If this was you experimenting, you should keep doing it. This work was stunning, you minimized the number of trees but the effect was full and did not leave anything missing.

I have used watercolors as a base for my soft pastel work. Takes things to a whole new level. Now I will try with my oil pastels. You have inspired me! Autumn colors are tricky, your greens need to be toned down a bit ( not yours, just in general) summer greens are vibrant. New life. Fall greens are richer, deeper, and ultimately dying , browning. I would say soften your background focus, your tree line is also too horizontal, all trees are the same height. And lastly, what is your focal point? Your individual components are fantastic, which one do you want to stand out? Dull down the rest.

I paint in watercolor mainly but I did one year of soft pastels (not oil) and I have used a watercolor underpainting with pastels on top. It worked for me to use very vivid watercolor and then details with pastels. Fun.

Oil Pastel!! Thanks for showing the way to combine these. Great job. Trees are so hard to draw... From watching your process videos and doing some things myself, I'm finding that the more "planning" I do, the better result I get. Sometimes it's "how do I represent this texture" and other times it's more about the composition. I think one of the other benefits of oil pastel is that you get a more immediate and quick result (compared to waiting for paints to dry). Great job!

Yes I do watercolour underlay if I want large areas of smooth or graduated wash-like effects underneath oil pastels. For smaller areas like clouds in a blue sky with grey in the clouds I can get away with oil pastel rubbed on with a solvent dampened cloth. But I can't get large smooth areas this way (I'm still working on it). And it does differ from one paper to another - I'm using HP watercolour paper throughout. There are three makes I have used - all are slightly different. Nice to see the oil pastels come out again. I use them all the time now.

It's true that for lager formats, it's pretty necessary (well, it makes life easier, let's say). Glad to read I'm not the only one that discovered the beauty of those two mediums combined. Have a great weekend Rik!

@@SyndiaArt Would it be much different if you did the underlay wash in Acrylic do you think?
@SyndiaArt
@SyndiaArt 2 жыл бұрын
I have done. Look wise I prefer the juxtaposition of watercolor and oil pastels. With acrylic being plasticky it removes some of the grit of the paper. You can easily get around this buy putting a layer of clear gesso after the acrylic layer which will give a great amount of grit/grip back. Both work really well. I think it boils down to personal preference, look wise.

@@SyndiaArt I avoid Gesso. If you then try to blend the pastel it seems to come off on whatever you're blending with. If you try to use solvent for blending after gesso it's even worse.

Oh! I never noticed it... You might be right. I'll have to test things out so more. I know that transparent gesso is very different than white gesso.

Have you ever tried water soluble pastels? (Artist loft makes a small cheaper set) They go down like regular pastel but then you can activate them with water and get a watercolour effect.
