Even a few that are not really worth the effort, sometimes. I found a very basic ‘60’s Philco 5 tube radio at a Resale Store. $7.oo(US). Had a couple of cracks, and a piece missing from the top in back [ a big chunk]. I plugged it in and it did work, d I bought it. A friend took the case ,and using his Auto Body Shop experience [ over 35 years], he repaired the cracks and filled the big gap. He painted the top and sides an off white [ because he had the paint], but masked off the front [ which is “ Refrigerator white”]. SO, wit all the work he put into it, I took it to “ the Florida Radio Doctor “, and he did a recap, replaced the Volume control ( as it was just bad), and a realignment. Another $40.oo . Well, it’s not pristine, but looks passable. And works fine. And is reliable. But no prize. But it was a shame to just let it be trashed. ( which is what would ultimately happen. I talked to the seller. It had been there over 2 years and it was headed to the trash can). I have it in my kitchen. (( I’ve also seen the same radio with a clock added)). 📻🙂
@paulbennell33133 жыл бұрын
@@jeffking291 Well I guess if someone thinks a radio is worth the effort, then it is. A lot of my old hi-fi and audio gear isn't worth much, some of it doesn't work but I like it. I guess that means it's worth fixing. Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks so but that's ok.

Dave you are amazing, far more work than I would have invested. I've switched over from radio restoration to the RCA 45 record player upgrading and restoration. The AM waves here in America have rendered the radio to a state that has made me loose interest in refurbishing or restoration. The work on the 45 players I find more interesting and I can listen to,what I want, not what is available. I'm in this business 60 years now and seen more radios than I could count. Dave, Having watched quite a few resurrections, each and every one totally awesome, please forgive me for stepping in with a suggestion. Back (way back) in my days of aerospace electronics engineering world, I was taught by a skilled assembly tech how to solder wire joints: Attach wire to terminal mechanically. Apply (rosin) flux with a little brush or from a bottle with a small hypodermic needle (flux was diluted with alcohol somewhat). Always clean iron tip on wet sponge. Then apply a little fresh solder on the tip. Heat the joint (this is where the little dab of solder on the tip helps heat transfer). Apply (flux-core) solder. Clean with alcohol (used to be denatured ethyl alcohol, nowadays isopropyl alcohol). Perfect joint every time. This works with lead-free solder as well. On old crusty wiring extra flux is a must. (I hate no-clean flux).
@DavidTipton1013 жыл бұрын
Hi Milan, thank you. Totally agree with your soldering tips, mechanical attachment, clean iron and flux the joint. I think I do all those except I use rosin core solder, a wire mesh tip cleaner but I tend to melt the solder on the tip and the joint simultaneously to quickly transfer the heat into the job and get out, similar to what you said about tinning the iron tip first. I use additional flux on larger joints or if I am re-melting old solder. For old corroded wire I dip them in Bakers Soldering Fluid to remove the corrosion. Thanks for your input Milan it's always appreciated 👍🙂

Hi Dave, Love the look of the small chassis you’re currently working on. In some respects it looks similar to an American midget radio. Small radios, that were usually made to a price, never cease to amaze me how well they perform. Take my two Philco ‘Hippo’ radios as an example, their reception capabilities are as good as my Philco, model B2852 - some of the differences being: it is physically larger; it has a wooden cabinet; larger speaker, therefore sounds better, and in real terms it probably cost three, or four times as much as a ‘Hippo’ radio cost. I first encountered the Tasma brand some twenty-five to thirty years ago. As I might have mentioned, there are always a number of overseas Vintage Radios, and Televisions turning up at our annual NVCF (not took place since 2019 due to the corvid outbreak). At the time I first saw a Tasma radio I thought the brand was a manufacturing company based somewhere in Tasmania. It wasn’t how I’d imagined! I was later informed they had been based somewhere in New South Wales, had some connection with Ekco radio and television, and had also become part of, or a subsidiary of Motorola??? I remember seeing a Tasma car radio, from what I guessed at the time probably dated from the late-40s, or early-50s. It was a type of transceiver, or radiotelephone: I suppose like the Police, Fire, or Ambulance might use. I remember it occupying a prominent place on a stall at our NVCF some fifteen-or-so years ago. It was on sale ‘As seen’, and its ticket price was several hundred pounds. Despite being very expensive, I later noticed ‘Sold’ written over its price. I guess it was, or is the only one of its kind here in the UK. Astor, and AWA were the better known Australian brands here in the UK. It is possible to locate Australian, New Zealand as well as most other overseas manufactured Vintage Radios here in the UK if one knows where to look. The Australian radio I mentioned getting my hands on is a STC ‘Capri’, model 5101. I’ve located a circuit diagram for this model, and it is totally dead at present. I’ll be starting work on it shortly - there are two repairs belonging to other people to complete, and one of my own restoration projects (Pye Model R34) is now close to completion. Hope to send a photograph of my STC radio to you sometime during the next two weeks. Cheers my friend, Phil
@DavidTipton1013 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, these 4 valve sets were made to a price too although still a substantial radio, it seems to work almose as well as 5 valve sets and would be perfect for city reception. You would think Tasma was from Tasmania but I think it was an amalgamation of the two men running the company, Thom And Smith = TAS... I don't know what where the MA came from. They had transceivers for the police which is probably what you saw. The STC 5101 was from the early 60s. I imagine it will work well like most of the radios at that time. I would like to see a photo of the STC. Kevin Chant's website will have service information for your STC if you need more info. I'm looking forward to your PYE video and especially the STC video, Cheers Phil 🙂

Wow, this video had it all, the Harry Potter feel music, a distraught grandchild seeking the thief who nicked her red crayon and a radio with the same name (Tasma) as my mother. I hope that it will be a happy ending, I guess I’ll just have to wait for Part 2 to find out.

KZbin is doing it to me again...NOT notifying me of your new videos! So glad to have found this one. As always, amazing work on your part. I got to thinking about the color issue. There are pigments available to color epoxy that might have done the trick on the red looking pink issue that you had. I have no idea what they cost, so it might be a bit pricey to use, but a thought. I like the idea of the magnet to cover up the holes, but the magnets simply don't adhere to aluminum. As typical with you, however, there are loads of good ideas that do work for me and I appreciate your sharing them. I am so looking forward to the next installment of this one! For me, it wasn't long enough! ;-) I have watched and enjoyed several videos of radio restorations that lasted 1 - 3 hours long, and loved every minute of it.
@DavidTipton1013 жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne, There would be a number of ways to colour the wax, I considered food dye for one but the old crayon enhanced the wax and worked well and cost nothing. There is no sign of the pink colour. I'm was not sure what your reference to a magnet was but you mean the fridge magnet cards, yes they won't stick to aluminium but great for steel chassis, it would mean cardboard and masking tape for aluminium chassis. I agonised about cutting the video in half but the end wasn't finished and it was running to about 1 hour 10 minutes already. If I see a video that long I put it aside or skip through it so I opted for the shorter 2 part series, plus it takes a bit of pressure off me having a video for next week 🙂

@@DavidTipton101 I enjoyed as usual. The wife says why couldn't you use a red candle for the wax.
@DavidTipton1013 жыл бұрын
@@clasicradiolover I didn't think of it would be one reason, but it would lower the melting point of the wax. I add stearic acid to the wax to raise the melting point, the crayon raised even further. 🙂

I had the same problem with an aa5 I just repaired. One of the oscillator coil wires was broken right where it exited Id of the coil of wire and was too short to solder to. I unwound the entire coil to get to inner most wrap where the break was. Fixed the break and hand wound the coil. The only way I found the break was while looking at the coil under magnification the copper reflected light a little bit.
@DavidTipton1013 жыл бұрын
Well done getting to the break Chris, that would be a daunting task but you have nothing to loose I guess. I'll keep your success in mind if I have the same problem, thanks 👍😀
