Really like this one, Davie. I’ve tried similarly with lead wire…inconsistent because the wire separates when I squeezed it. I’ve slightly modified the legs: using sheer, glossy fabric in an embroidery hoop, I glued the grouse/India hackles to it with silicon caulking adhesive. First I clipped the tip and stripped the bottom leaving, enough for three legs of about three fibers each, on each side. Then, pressed them, dull side down onto the glued fabric, separated the legs with a bobbin, and let them dry. You have to trim them out of the fabric but it makes them more durable. Also, they work well enough, for my purposes, as clinger or swimmers by reversing them on the thorax. Your book is a treasure trove for ideas like this.

I just came across this video and really love it. I have been struggling to get realistic gills on clinger nymphs and this solution is very clever. I know it isn't your favorite fly to tie Davie but I really thank you for doing this one, it is very helpful!

Hi Davie, I started tying because of your channel with its great explanation and expertise, I now enjoy tying as much as fly fishing all down to you and your video's. Top level fly tying with that nymph pattern, Im a little off with that kind of standard, but i will keep trying, I always keep a look out for you when i visit the Glasgow Angling Centre, Thanks again Mike.

If you’re new to this, you’ll rarely watch a tyer this talented and able to communicate what’s happening. But, don’t think your materials will cooperate quite like his at first. I’ve been at this for 50+. I learn something from every one of his videos.

Hey Davie, the same body technique as the Mc Phail pupa. I love that fly, it was one of the first "difficult ties when I was just beginning. It is easier now. It really looks a treat with the organza. I got the really narrow, soft organza for baby clothes. I like the way it ties on too, and thick enough to make any fly I will need for trout, or salmon. Thanks so much for sharing your vast experience with the rest of us. I know you tie to "satisfy yourself" but I must say, you set a very high standard. I try my best to meet it. Fall far short, but I am learning from the best. All the best to you and yours. Sean

I have just finished tying this fly and I am very happy with the result! I used to tie Edwards pattern, but I like your variant of this nymph a lot more. Also I took b175 and the proportions are just great. Thank you again and I am looking forward to see your new patterns!

Fantastic Davie...a lot of effort going into tying that nymph, but i`m sure the time spent will be more than worth it. I`m loving the look of the organza/thinskin body.....think i`ll head to ebay and buy some ribbon. Thanks again for another great Video.

I like the look of the organza body and bought some ribbon at a local craft store. I found that some has a wider woven edge with a wire core. This type is a bit harder to wrap and the woven edge seems too heavy. The ribbon without wire looks a lot better and more like what you are using. The organza series of flies is great! Keep these fantastic instructional vids coming, thanks.

Hi Davie,can I ask, have you caught many fish on this type of nymph? I only enquire because there seems to be a lot of debate about the value of the Heptagenid. A lovely pattern nonetheless and very easy to follow. I would be grateful for your view
@DavieMcPhail7 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, I have caught fish on this fly but it's not a pattern I would normally fish when they are hatching as I concentrate on fishing emerger and dry fly patterns..I would say there is value in having something like this in your box as I have tied it for friends that do fish them a lot especially for Grayling..I hope this helps you in some way.. All the very best Davie..

hi Davie i have just bought a wee fly tying kit but no materials with it the question is should i buy the feathers silk ect separate or buy a bulk kit i would like to tie nymphs mainly ,,could you steer me in the right direction as to what basics i should get and where to get them ,,thanks rob
@DavieMcPhail9 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, Like yourself I started off with a small fly tying kit but it did come with some materials to get me started. The materials were suited for tying dries and wets for river fishing so I added to it as I went along so I would recommend it you want to start tying nymphs then just buy materials that you would need for the waters you are going to fish rather than buy a kit as you may end up with a lot of materials you may not use... I hope you enjoy tying your own flies as it's as good as fly fishing itself... All the very best Davie...
