Davin is still working from home, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t making progress on the 1951 Buick straight-eight. With the help of his daughter, Grace, he shows us the process of rebuilding the oil and fuel pumps.

It will be great to see the old Buick up and running. This was a classic luxury car from the early 50's and it is terrific to see one saved. Great work on the videos when flying by the seat of your pants. Your daughter did a great job.

Whenever I finished overhauling a fuel pump, I would activate the pump lever to make certain that there was a sucking sound. I started doing that after I goofed a rebuild, installed the pump and the engine would not run - no gas.

I’ve bought replacement rebuilt fuel pumps where I didn’t do the check you describe above and same thing - no fuel. Always check!

@@MrSkeltal268 I think I installed one cam driven carb pump in my life, so I never would have thought of pre-testing. I'm one of those guys who got in the business when carb engines were virtually extinct outside of collector or enthusiast cars. Given how crappy many replacement parts are, I do believe testing those pumps is worthwhile.

Trying to balance working on the old truck, as well as the daily driver newer truck. Wow! That fuel pump is something extra! I'll take my simple little flathead Ford fuel pump for the 49-53 block all day and twice on Sunday. Good to see a new video, and thanks to Gracie for running the camera, otherwise we'd all be missing out!

He might have been able to use a standard fuel pump if he converted to electric wiper blades. More expensive cars had that vacuum pump so that the windshield wipers would not slow down during full throttle acceleration. However, when going for a picture perfect rebuild, having electric wipers and a different fuel pump may have disqualified the car from the event.

Those old fuel/vacuum pumps are a PITA to rebuild. I'm working on a 1948 Super Sedanet rustmobile with a 248 straight-eight. The engine is the best thing about this car. It sat in a field for 20 years. Had to chase a family of raccoons out of it before moving it. Took me a month to get rid of the odor.

Watching to learn all I can. I've done top end stuff but never a full build. I have an 82 350 I was trying to get a rebuild on. Went to 12+ shops ,they all bragged how good they are. They would stand and tell me I need such and such can and lifters ,need to trash the mechanical fuel pump, and stock manifolds ,and the list goes on. When I tell them I want a base stock 350 rebuild ,I'm looked at like I have two heads ,and sorry I can't do that. Then they tell me I'm better off to junk the motor and get a crate motor so I'm going to do it myself. It just has a blown head gasket ,could just do the top. The last time I did that on a 91 dodge 318 spun a main a month later . Figure learn on the 350 before I do the 283 in the 61 four door hard top impala. I've built the four jet twice and still developing very small leaks.

Awesome work! Looks like a TBI motor on the stand..I do wonder why it don't fire..
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 4 жыл бұрын
I think that TBI unit is one of those self adjusting bolt on units that replace carbs. I have heard that they don't always synchronize with the distributor signal, even if they say they do. People are sometimes stuck buying a distributor from the maker of the bolt-on TBI unit. Another problem is how slowly that engine is cranking. The starter may be drawing more than the battery can handle, resulting in ,low voltage at the engine computer. Engine computers need a certain number of volts in order to function. No computer function means no gasoline and no spark.

Ya know I do understand the constraints that you are having to work under but as complicated as the fuel/vacuum pump is I would have appreciated a lot more close up action as well as a running commentary as you assembled it.
