With COVID and the vaccine and the way that anyone who strayed from the narrative was vilified and restricted from doing things in the case of the unvaccinated even though I was one of them is quite scary and I think cancel culture in general is just an attempt at keeping people compliant and not sharing opinions that might be unpopular due to the backlash and hate that will come your way. this is true, if it was about building a better world they would be leading by example and showing compassion, they would be like hippies, instead it is about virtue, feeling virtuous and proving your virtue by pointing at someone else, that is why they have to come up with ever more bizarre concepts like cultural appropriation is racist or maths is racist, you need to find something to prove your virtue. people who anonymously attack people and try and get them fired from their job because they said something they didn't like are not good people. luckily people are now fighting back and are not so scared

That was a nice conversation. Really glad I clicked and subscribed. It's actually scary that discussing a topic, interrogating and critiqueing the different points of view openly is not really possible any more. What's more scary is that neither side of the extremes can seem to even comprehend understanding the other viewpoint. When there's no conversation to have, then there's no chance of coming to a compromise on what actually is the fair way to treat or understand a certain topic. I can't fathom people who are so sure of these things that they alienate people so willingly, just because they might have a different thought process or opinion. It's really sad actually.

There’s a contingent of people in society who seem to have popularised the idea that when facts are contrary to how we feel we ought to prioritise feelings and consider said feelings to be indicators of a ‘real truth’. A lot of people probably got into trouble around the time that Sarah Everard was killed merely for pointing out that being attacked, even if not killed, in public places was nearly 5 times more likely to happen to men. Nevertheless this was and still is true. Similarly, statistics tell us that since 2000 fewer black people each year are victims of police violence, while violence by police against white people shows no such decline. This latter remark was said to be racist despite it being in accordance with the best information we have, because the feelings of being victimised are considered to be far more ‘truthful’ than any data which shows such feelings to be somewhat mistaken. We’re living at a time when what is called ‘justice’ is in fact the supposed entitlement of particular peoples to live a life *entirely* free from bad feelings, including those caused by conflicting evidence. It worried me that, when we were talking about Ms. Everard’s death, we were showing just how uninterested we are when a man is assaulted or killed. There are posters on the London Underground telling us that we ought to act when we see a woman being harassed on public transport. Perhaps this is a fair request, but there has never been a similar request to act when a man is the recipient instead. Cancel culture is a somewhat misleading term, because it’s not always about ‘cancellation’ but rather silencing. We make up our minds about what we want to hear and how we want the world to be and we refuse to listen to anything that conflicts with this. We claim that disagreeing with the accepted line of thinking is a form of hate or marginalisation. All the while we continue to show that we don’t really care about such hate or marginalisation so long as they’re happening to the right people. Edit: I’d like to add that Davina’s tweet wasn’t badly timed; it’s *precisely* at times when emotions are high that we need reasoned, informed voices to ground us and calm us down. For many people there’s *never* an acceptable time to post a tweet like hers, but it doesn’t follow that she ought not to have posted it.

The sad thing is that at any point these people who call for others to be cancelled could be cancelled themselves for saying the simplest thing, like coloured people instead of people of colour or standing up for women’s rights. Christ who would have thought 10 years ago that defending women’s rights could get you cancelled. I commend Davina for not only standing by her statement, but also raising it again, because the haters can start again at any time.

I've always done my best to cross the street or to slow down not to catch up. I've had 30+ yrs doing that without over thinking it. Most men I know have always done that also. One isolated anectdote. I'm quite a large and fit person and was taking the tube back to Walthamstow after my shift working in a gym in Hampstead. was about 10.30 at night and it was a busy carriage. I noticed a rather uncomfortable lady who was angling her body away from a drunk, leery man next to her. He was trying to drunkenly talk to her and getting in her space. I kept an eye on it and noticed that he got up and walked a few steps away from his seat. As soon as he did that, I sat down where he had been sitting 5 seconds earlier. He turned round to sit back down next to the lady, and got a shock that I was there. I stayed there for about three stops, then the train stopped in the station and stayed there. The drunk guy was still standing up. The police came on and escorted the man away. Someone must have given word to the police. I have no idea how. Anyway, I got off at the next stop and the lady caught my eye and said 'thank you'. I nodded and that was that. Women do have to be wary and things can happen, and it is a concern. We all have mum's, sisters, gf, wives, friends that it couild happen to, but Davina is right. We can't vilify all or even most men. However, it is definitely a concern for women.

It's all too easy to adopt the unsophisticated position that people in the entertainment sphere tend to all lean a certain way politically. Being hyper conscious of one's image is pretty much a given in that particular sphere and behaviour in public tends to play out accordingly. With all that said it, is refreshing to see someone from that sphere attempt to be a voice of reason and **not capitulate** to the baying mob by standing by their position. Fair play to you Davina. I'm moderately, pleasantly, surprised at hearing this. Thank you.

This is less about ‘cancel culture’ (I’m not even certain that’s what it is) and far more about the evils of Social Media and more specifically about the abuse of SM to attack people - frequently anonymously- for airing views with which the attacker disagrees. It’s irresponsible and it’s a wholly negative response. It takes debate nowhere and simply makes sensible people with justifiable opinions, like Davina, unwilling to contribute to debate. That simply cannot be a good thing. For anyone.

No she didn't; she's not saying "I didn't get to learn", she's saying "People don't get to learn". It's easier for celebrities to bounce back, yeah, but often a lot of people, day to day, if they speak out that's it, they might lose their career, lose their friendship group. All because we've built this culture of "No discussion, you said something bad, you've been cancelled". So a lot of the time people just are afraid to say anything and we have good polling data on that. If anything she's saying we need to be more forgiving and let people make mistakes and figure it out. Also she's saying the best learning comes from discussion, not silencing detractors.
