DaVinci Resolve - Best free video editing software? Tutorial for absolute beginners pt 1

Is #DaVinciResolve the best free #videoeditor? I'm not going into that question today, but
I will give you the best tutorial under 20 minutes to get you up and running.

I personally think that DaVinci is a much better package - it's sound editing is great, colour correction brilliant and compositing is next level. You just need a powerful laptop / computer to get it to run well

Hi I do have a question but firstly can I say I think you put out the most professional help vids on youtube. Your voice is clear and free from all the hummms, harrrs, wells, the rambling stutters and stammers that fill to over flowing the other so called instructional videos that litter ytube. Some folk think you just need to sit in front of a camera and ramble on and that is that. The homework and preparation you put into each tutorial is outstanding. You give off the feel of someone that either did or does work in the field of instruction, and if not then you should as you pass knowledge on clearly, concisely and without ramble or clutter. Now the question, one of my granddaughters is interested in photography and video making, and is getting a laptop for her birthday, (She already received a bridge camera for Christmas) and I was wondering because the laptop will not be the latest cutting edge whoop de do tech, which of Lightworks or DaVinci is the least demanding of resources when running, or are they much of a muchness. A second question if I may, also which would you say had the softest learning curve? Thanks in advance.

@@techismad I also started learning Lightworks a few days ago using your tutorials. I already did a few test clips with VFX, titles and stuff. Your tutorials are awesome, dude! But what is your advice? Should I drop Lightworks and go with Davinci?

@@techismad Because, for example. I was looking for how to make an animated travel map with Lightworks and I was not able to find any. It looks like it is an unbearable task for Lightworks. But for Davinci, there are at least 4-5 how-to tutorials. That says it all about the capabilities. And plus 720p vs 4k export in the free version and plus a bunch of VFX, and other stuff...

Hey! What's the minimum required specification for a laptop/pc to work with davinci?

I think it has a minimum requirement for a GPU - but I'm not sure what that is. Best thing you can do is download it and try to start it up. If your laptop can't handle it, it will tell you

Have a small problem. When trying to bring .psd files into media storage DR consolidates them into one clip, 27 files long. I'm doing an animated children's book and need to lengthen or shorten each individual clip. Any way I can get them into media storage individually?

I just tested it - and you're correct. I think I figured it out though.... I'm guessing when you saved the psd files they were named sequentially? Like 1.psd, 2.psd and so on? In that case, DR just assumes you're making a timelapse or sequence movie and then consolidates them to a sequence clip - (really cool to know that you can make time lapses and collages out of photos). To solve this, just rename them so that they're not a sequence and then you can import the images as separate clips. Hope that helps - let me know ok?

I dont see my media files for some reason?

If you're in the media tab, you have to search for them in your folders. If you're looking for them while you're editing your timeline, go to the top toolbar, and click on Media pool. Any clips or audio you've got in your project will show up here

@@techismad I used obs to record them, then moved them from my desktop video folder to a folder on my other drive, the folder in the other drive has nothing showing up in the program

What's the advantage of DaVinci to Lightworks

lightworks(free version) only uploads video at 720p whereas davinci resolve uploads at 1080p

A couple of things. Firstly, Lightworks free only let’s you export 720p movies. DaVinci lets you export 4k in the free version. Secondly, DaVinci let’s you save your projects wherever you want, whereas Lightworks doesn’t. Lastly, Lightworks has basic VFX abilities, whereas DaVinci has quite a huge audio editor / VFX and compositing system built in
